SSS Welcome Message

Dear SSS-ers,

Welcome to our first (and hopefully last ever) virtual meeting! It’s not the same as being together in person, but I hope this will be an adequate substitute till we can reunite again in 2022. The Executive Office and Program Committee have put so much effort and time into making this a memorable, engaging meeting, and I would like to welcome everyone and wish all of you a great conference. Thanks so much to Katie Acosta, David Brunsma, Lyla Byers, D’Lane Compton, Brandon Jackson, Rashawn Ray, Rebecca Shankman, and all of the members of the Program and Local Arrangements Committees who did the heavy lifting of putting all this together.

Enjoy the meetings, everyone! We’ve got great Author Meets Curious Readers sessions, so many interesting panels, advice on book publishing, networking cafés, and even “contemplative practices” with Courtney B. Ross. So, grab your Mardi Gras beads (in the spirit of New Orleans) and I’ll see you on the screen!

Happy conferencing! Adia

Dr. Adia Harvey Wingfield Washington University in St. Louis SSS President 2020-2021

The Southern Sociologist

The Southern Sociologist (TSS) is the official publication of the Southern Sociological Society. It is typically published electronically four times a year in the months of May, September, January, and March. The purpose of TSS is to report the news, announcements, and information of interest to the profession and to serve as a medium of communication for the SSS membership on issues affecting the profession.

Social Currents Social Currents, the official journal of the Southern Sociological Society, is a broad-ranging social science journal that focuses on cutting-edge research from all methodological and theoretical orientations with implications for national and international sociological communities. The uniqueness of Social Currents lies in its format. The front end of every issue is devoted to short, theoretical, agenda-setting contributions and brief, empirical and policy-related pieces. The back end of every issue includes standard journal articles that cover topics within specific subfields of sociology, as well as across the social sciences more broadly.

13 Anti-Harassment Policy

SSS reminds everyone: Our Annual Meeting is convened for the purposes of professional development and scholarly educational interchange in the spirit of free inquiry and free expression. Harassment of colleagues, students, hotel staff or other conference participants undermines the principle of equity at the heart of these professional fora and is inconsistent with the principles of free inquiry and free expression. Consequently, harassment is considered by SSS to be a serious form of professional misconduct.

The following Anti-Harassment Policy outlines expectations for all those who attend or participate in SSS meetings. It reminds SSS meeting participants that all professional academic ethics and norms apply as standards of behavior and interaction at these meetings.

Purpose SSS is committed to providing a safe and welcoming conference environment for all participants, free from harassment based on age, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, language, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression, disability, health conditions, socioeconomic status, marital status, domestic status, or parental status (hereafter, simply harassment). "Participant" in this policy refers to anyone present at SSS meetings, including staff, contractors, vendors, exhibitors, venue staff, SSS members, and all other attendees.

Expected Behavior All participants at SSS meetings are expected to abide by this Anti-Harassment Policy in all meeting venues including ancillary events as well as official and unofficial social gatherings. • Follow the norms of professional respect that are necessary to promote the conditions for free academic interchange. • If you witness potential harm to a conference participant, be proactive in helping to mitigate or avoid that harm. • Alert conference security personnel or law enforcement if you see a situation in which someone might be in imminent physical danger.

Unacceptable Behavior Harassment of any participant is unethical behavior under the American Sociological Association Code of Ethics, which offer guiding principles for how sociologists should conduct themselves in all professional activities both in person and online. Harassment consists of a single intense and severe act or of multiple persistent or pervasive acts which are demeaning, abusive, offensive, or create a hostile professional or workplace environment. Harassment may include sexual solicitation, physical advance, or verbal or non-verbal conduct that is sexual in nature; it may also include threatening, intimidating, or hostile acts; circulation of written or graphic material that denigrates or shows hostility toward an individual or group; epithets, slurs, or negative stereotyping based on group identity. Attendees are encouraged to immediately report instances of harassment during the Annual Meeting to a member of the SSS Executive Committee (see list here https://goo.gl/2Cmduu). To read the American Sociological Association Code of Ethics in its entirety, visit www.asanet.org and follow the link to "Ethics."

AMCR- These “Author Meets Curious Reader” Sessions are an opportunity for authors and other experts in their field to discuss recent publications. Join these conversations to learn more about new sociological material and to hear from those likely to agree, or disagree, with the conclusions drawn.

Networking Cafés- Part of the joy of SSS conferences is reuniting with colleagues from around the world to learn and hang out. Join networking cafés, either those we have named for you or those still unnamed, to catch up and reconnect as well as meet new colleagues.

Panel Sessions- These curated conversations focus on a topic and the scholars making waves within it. In viewing these sessions, you will both learn from those presenting and have the opportunity to ask questions to learn more about the subject.

Paper Sessions- Similarly to in person conferences, paper sessions are the opportunity to learn from authors about the work they have been doing and the new sociological knowledge coming out of it. These sessions are built of 10-minute presentations and question and answer sessions where time allows.

Poster Sessions- Almost paper sessions but based on posters, these sessions allow scholars to share their work with an active audience. Presenters in these sessions range from undergraduates sharing their work with the community for the first time to tenured professors continuing to share their knowledge.

Workshops- Focused on skills sociologists use such as publishing and teaching, these provide an opportunity to learn from colleagues about the inner workings of our discipline. Attend these to learn from experienced members of our network about the ways they do their work as sociologists.
