Page 17 Page New purpose for ‘petite’ space at Tower Gallery

By TIFFANY REPECKI U [email protected] 2019 4, September Friday, of Week Prior to the start of season last year, the Tower Gallery on Sanibel renovated its upstairs bathroom, reopening it as “La Petite Galerie” — a separate innovative space to feature monthly themed artwork. “Last year we decided to try to generate some new ness to the gallery,” JoAnne Bedient, a member of the artists' cooperative and board member for the group, said of the reimagined community exhibit. A record-breaking number of turnovers among its member artists this year, however, inspired the gallery to find a new use for its La Petite Galerie. Bedient explained that the gallery is completely artist run. Potential members must submit an application and be reviewed by a committee for approval. Upon their acceptance, members pay a monthly due to the gallery, works shifts at the venue and contribute a commission to the space on their sold pieces. But, it can ______be hard to keep it all up. “Sometimes in an artist's life, things change,” she said. Bedient noted that health issues can arise, financial situations can alter and such.

Since the start of this year, the Tower Gallery has wel captivasanibel.com comed in five new artists because the space opened up as it said farewell to existing members who had those unex pected life changes arise. Gopher Tortoises From page 1 The eggs were placed in vermiculite, a substrate used for incubating eggs because it retains moisture without over-saturating the eggs, then kept in an incubator that maintained a constant temperature. After 82 days, the eggs hatched overnight, much to the surprise of the reha bilitation staff on Aug. 27. “The expected hatch date for us was not until Aug. 29, so it was a bit of a surprise to come in and find two newly hatched tortoises, even though it is within the expected time frame,” CROW Rehabilitation Manager Breanna Frankel said. “Both hatchlings are healthy and doing well.” Each hatchling weighed in at just 22 grams, with one being 4.7 centimeters and the other measured 4.2 cen timeters. In the wild, gopher tortoises do not provide any parental care, so from the time they hatch, baby tortoises are on their own to find food and protection from preda tors. The two tortoises will remain at CROW’s wildlife hospital for a few days to ensure they are healthy and eat ing on their own before being released back to the area where their mother was rescued.
