Mr. Ellis Cobb Editor: Horseshoe Pitchers News Digest 1307 Solfisberg Ave., Aurora, 111. Dear Ellis: On page 6 of the April issue of the Digest is a very interesting article on Class Designations. The idea has great merit. By coincidence, earlier this year I was thinking along the same lines and worked out another nomenclature. When Lee Davis visited with me recently 1 showed it to him, and he thought it would be a significant, meaningful manner of class designation. Here it is: DIVISIONS (Based on ringer average) Established area Amateur section Old New R% avg. A Grand Master 75 & up I Able 35-40 B Master 70-75 J Talent 30-35 C Associate Master 65-70 K Apprentice 25-30 D Expert 60-65 L Novice 15-25 E Associate Expert 55-60 F Hi-Skill 50-55 G Skilled 45-50 H Craftsman 40-50 Tournaments in these areas should be held at various times rather than attempt them all at the same time, though perhaps three or four could be done in the same tournament. I trust others will carry on this discussion so that a conclusion can be arrived at for this year. Carl von der Lancken 2 Manitou Trail, White Plains, N.Y.

Ohio Buckeye Pitcher, Pentilla, Tops In New Brighton, Pa. Spring Warm Up Tournament The New Brighton Spring Warm-up Champion is William Penttila of Ohio. Albert Zadroga. 1962 Allegheny County Champion, with only three practice sessions prior to the tournament gave a very good showing for him- self, losing only to Penttila in the final round of a ten man round robin. Be- fore the final round it appeared that the champion might be Zadroga. A1 had not lost a game, defeating James Ohler (1962 Penna. State Champion) and Herbert Pinch (1962 Warm-up Champion), while Penttila had lost a very close match with Ohler. The Ohler had an unfortunate accident. Something in James' back became dislocated and he was forced to leave the contest. (All of us certainly hope that nothing seriously has happened ito one of the great- est champions that this state of Pennsylvania has ever produced.) Ohler then forfeited all of his previous wins and succeeding games. Zadroga and Penttila then entered the final round with identical 8-0 records. Herbert Pinch also made a good showing by coming in third, losing only to Zadroga and Penttila. Class B was won by Relman Wilson sweeping an eight man round robin. Herman Boyer, one of our most improved pitchers, came in second losing only two games. Wilson shot 60.9% and Boyer 59.8%. Class C was won by Robert Byers of New Brighton and Class D by Wayne Richard of Unionville. Both men had no defeats in their respective eight man round robins. With the form that Wayne displayed in this event, this young lad will certainly make his presence felt very soon in the higher classes. THE HORSESHOE PITCHER'S NEWS DIGEST

The field in the Ladies' tourney should be a good one with World Cham- pion Sue Gillespie on hand along with Wanda Ditmer who tied for 2nd at Greenville last summer and Esta McKee who won the World title in 1960. The Muncie Club has raised money for cash prizes by mean& of a pro- gram brochure and other means. 22 THE HORSESHOE PITCHERS NEWS DIGEST

Old Sol brought us some unexpected shirt-sleeve weather and Vic, after an early loss to Dan Graham, knocked off all the high qualifiers and breezed through while the rest of the field was upsetting one another in the late rounds. Sig Pederson, after losing early to Vic, looked the sharpest of the bunch until Paul Snow trounced him in the final round, knocking him out of a first place tie. Then, to add insult to injury, Paul edged Sig out again in the playoff for second place. Herb Pidde wound up with the 2nd best ringer percentage but had trouble stringing them together when needed. It was good to see Dan Graham and Herb Criss back pitching after missing a lot of the tournaments last year. A couple more, and their percentage will be up about 10 points. Rudy's day was a brilliant success when he dumped Paul Snow out of a tie for first. Jim Malvern went better than he has for a couple of years and looks like he is on the way back up. B and C were real dogfights except for Bill Coppernoll of Seattle, the only pitcher to go through the day undefeated in winning the C. Bremerton got its chance to howl when Wagner, a fast-improving three-quarter pitcher, out-steadied the rest of the field in the B. Heleker of Seattle won the three- way playoff for 2nd.
