Preliminary discussions held during the 1979 PGA Seniors Championship led to the formation of a Senior Advisory Council. The Council members for 1980 included Dan Sikes, Chairman; Sam Snead, Honorary Chairman, Julius Soros, Gardner Dickinson, Bob Goalby, Don January and Bob Rosburg. This council met on January 16, 1980, at Ponte Vedra, FL, and established recommendations as to eligibility and tournament format which would assure the participation of leading players in Senior TOUR tournaments. Recommendations of the Senior Advisory Council were accepted by the Tour- nament Policy Board of the TOUR, and the Senior TOUR made its debut with the $125,000 Atlantic City Seniors International, at the Atlantic City Country Club in Atlantic City, NJ, June 19-22, 1980. At the recommendation of the Senior Advisory Council, eligibility for Senior TOUR competition was established on two criteria: leadership in career earnings and leadership in career victories. With players made eligible by these rules, the basic format for Senior TOUR competition was established to include a field of 50 players, with 40 players to be determined by the two eligibility criteria and 10 players selected by tournament sponsors and through qualifying competitions. Administrator of the Senior TOUR is Brian Henning, who also serves as Director of Tournament Administration for the TOUR.
