Aamir Khan's “Satyamev Jayate” in Sikkim Aamir Khan’s “Satyamev Jayate” in Sikkim A documentary film on the organic journey of Sikkim was shot in Sikkim under the banner of Aamir Khan Film Production unit, Mumbai. This story of Sikkim going fully organic will be telecast as one of the episodes of the much awaited Talk Show to be hosted by Aamir Khan to be telecast in Star Plus. The documentary also features an interview of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim with Aamir Khan which was conducted at New Delhi on 09.04.2012. The Talk Show will be featuring selected stories on social issues affecting the life of the common man. The filming crew reached Gangtok on 11 th April 2012 and filmed the organically certified Temi Tea gardens, vegetable clusters of Simkharka, Ginger and Orange cultivation at Sajong, Central Pendam, training of farmers on Internal Control System (ICS) development and documentation for Organic Certification. The crew captured farmers conducting organic farming activities, interviews with farmers and other stakeholders involved in this organic movement of the State on April 12 th and 13 th 2012. The second day of the shooting covered the organic stalls at Kanchendzonga Shopping Complex where the organic producers as well as consumers were interviewed. This was followed by shooting at Integrated Pest Management laboratory, Soil Testing Laboratory, Livelihood School Tadong, and the organic baby-corn, sweet corn and off-season vegetables production by different Self Help Groups of Rumtek. The Hon’ble Minister, FS&AD and H&CCD Departments was also present at Rumtek and was also interviewed. It is indeed a great achievement for Sikkim that the noble organic vision of the Government has been recognized by a production house of Aamir Khan’s repute and has been selected for broadcasting as one of the sixteen episodes. This will also serve as a very good platform for making our organic story heard all over the world and will go a long way in the promotion of the organic agenda of Sikkim putting Sikkim in the global map of Organic Farming. .

Female consumers have managed their relation to film costume through negotiations with their tailor as to how film outfits can be modified. These efforts have coincided with, and reinforced, a semiotic of female film costume where eroticized Indian clothing, and most forms of western clothing set the vamp apart from the heroine. Since the late 1980s, consumer capitalism in India has flourished, as have films that combine the display of material excess with conservative moral values. New film costume designers, well connected to the fashion industry, dress heroines in lavish Indian outfits and western clothes; what had previously symbolized the excessive and immoral expression of modernity has become an acceptable marker of global cosmopolitanism. Material scarcity made earlier excessive costume display difficult to achieve. The altered meaning of women’s costume in film corresponds with the availability of ready-to-wear clothing, and the desire and ability of costume designers to intervene in fashion retailing. Most recently, as the volume and diversity of commoditised clothing increases, designers find that sartorial choices ‘‘on the street’’ can inspire them, as they in turn continue to shape consumer choice. R. Rahman became the first Indian composer to win Best Score and Best Song (“Jai Ho”) for his music in the film, Slumdog Millionaire (2008). This event not only granted Rahman another prestigious accolade for his accomplishments as a popular film music composer (i.e., he has been awarded many times over in India for his music), but it gave Rahman new star-status recognition among a Western audience. Although enormously famous in India and well-known among the South Asian diaspora located throughout many parts of the world, Rahman remained, up until that time, virtually unknown among mainstream U.S. audiences. U.S. audiences today are perhaps more likely than a decade ago to recognize the sounds and images of Indian cinema known as Bollywood, a cultural artifact, once considered “kitsch,” that increasingly traverses international popular cultures. Consequently, the appeal of Rahman’s Bollywood music among a wider global audience (as presented in Slumdog Millionaire) coincides with the global circulation and consumption of Bollywood films and music in recent years. I suggest that the appeal for Rahman’s music outside of India cannot be explained by the Western fascination with the exotic “Other," but instead involves a cultural affinity for a type of style and sound set forth in Rahman’s music.
