Cronica D'una Mirada: Clandestine Filmmaking Under Franco, 1960 - 1975 (English Translation of Guidebook)
Cronica D'Una Mirada: Clandestine Filmmaking Under Franco, 1960 - 1975 (English Translation of Guidebook) Introduction At a time when the prolific amount of audiovisual material on offer tends to bewilder us, rather than developing our viewpoint, with this collection we would like to offer something more than a mere selection of rare images, rescued from a past where there was a distinct lack of freedom of expression. Far from wishing to expand this climate of bewilderment by feeding a certain nostalgia, our intention is to vindicate the film medium as an essential tool for documenting, and understanding, our most recent history. The material presented in this collection was produced, at times by amateurs, from a marginalized position with respect to the usual production and distribution circuits, using the most precarious of technical equipment. It was conditioned by strict censorship and in open opposition to an authoritarian regime. In addition to offering an alternative point of view to that imposed by the propaganda machine of the Francoist dictatorship, this material also allows us to understand the commitment that links all creative work with its time. For this reason, in addition to the obvious evidence found in these images and the possibility of identifying with the scenes and the events they depict, our aim was to situate the spectator beyond the screen; at the point where the last decision was made before beginning to film; at the point before the Moviola pauses on a revealing frame, or before the reaction of an audience about to be dazzled by the lights of an improvised projection room; at the exact point where the chronicle of a view is written. -

Introduction JOAN RAMON RESINA Over the last half century, visual stories have claimed an ever-larger share of the popular culture, as literature initiated its gradual descent to a quantitatively and qualitatively more restricted audience. During this time, fi lm has achieved technical sophistication and social prestige. It is now fi rmly established as an academic discipline in its own right, enjoying pride of place within the larger paradigm of Cultural Studies. But although Spanish fi lm is today the object of teaching and research in many departments, analytical resources are still scarce in English. The existence of a few histories of Spanish cinema (the best of which, John Hopewell’s Out of the Past, has long been out of print), of specialized work on a few privileged directors (Buñuel, Saura, and Almodóvar), and a handful of collections of essays (notably those edited by Peter William Evans and Barry Jordan) does not cover the interpretive needs of the English-speaking student of Spanish cinema, who is often at the mercy of reviews of scant exegetical value. The present volume is intended as a contribution to remedy this relative dearth by offering a set of original pieces on carefully selected directors and fi lms spanning the period from the origins of the New Spanish Cinema in the 1950s to the end of the twentieth century. It would be easy to draw attention to what is missing and to dispute the choices made. Every selection entails judgments of value and one chooses at one’s peril. But it is also true that books have a fate. -

Spanish and German with English subtitles Featured in 2007 Die Stille vor Bach The Silence Before Bach Die Stille vor Bach Text by Marcelo Expòsito “Die Stille vor Bach” is an approximation of music and its related disciplines and professions through the work of Johann Sebastian Bach. The film is a reflection on the deep dramaturgical relations between image and music, where music is not merely a subsidiary substratum of image, but a subject of parity. The starting point of the film is a predefined musical structure. The sound track is composed of music by Bach, in addition to two sonatas by Mendelssohn and an etude of Ligety, which create an architectural vault, under which the history of film unfurls: a passage through the XVIII, XIX and XXI centuries together with J.S.Bach. -
Warsaw Bridge Film Notes.Pdf
WARSAW BRIDGE Synopsis Warsaw Bridge is dated 1989, the year of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Beneath a sparkling surface of spectacular socio-cultural events and the frivolous life in a happy Europe, lies the tension of broken memories and personal and historical cataclysms. Warsaw Bridge shatters the plot into a thousand fragments in a European landscape broken by the return of History. I was literally freaked and said, “Who? Pere Portabella? Used to produce Bunuel films? Why haven’t I ever even heard of this guy? How could a rich and dazzling and sumptuous film such as this remain so utterly unknown in my country? The exquisite images, the superbly rendered music, the bravura style, this bold narrative, the great performances, the perfection of the totality of this unique and vibrant wonderland of a film --- How to get it seen in America?” The answer now, these few years later, is the intrepid and visionary tricksters at Shadow Distribution, to whom I am so deeply indebted for the work that they have put into making this American distribution a reality. -
Honeymoon Miralda Project (The) CAE1801
The Honeymoon Miralda Project Collection CAE1801 Introduction/Abstract Spanish conceptual artist Antoni Miralda conceived of a multi-year, multi-event project marrying the Christopher Columbus Monument in Barcelona to the Statue of Liberty in New York, which culminated in a 1992 wedding ceremony is Las Vegas. Materials include correspondence, project ephemera, and press materials. Biographical Note: Antoni Miralda Antoni Miralda was born in Terrassa, Barcelona, in 1942 where he grew up in the milieu of a textile manufacturing town. After military service, he moved to Paris in 1962, starting to create sculptural objects and drawings while making a living through his work in photography for fashion magazines. In 1967 he began to create 'food sculptures' working with organic materials and with objects from popular culture. He also started to collaborate with other artists in creating participatory events with colored food and ceremonial rituals. The small-scale work evolved into large constructions in public sites while the private events grew into complex public ceremonial events involving ritual and color. In 1971 he moved to New York City, and since then he has lived and worked in the United States and Europe creating public art and installations. In 1979 he was a fellow of the Center for advanced Visual Studies at M.I.T. and began to create a series of art videos and other documentary works. From 1986 to 1992 he developed the Honeymoon Project, a multi-site, international art project of the symbolic wedding of New York's Statue of Liberty with the Columbus Monument in Barcelona. His projects have appeared at Documenta VI, at the XVII São Paulo Bienal (17a Bienal de São Paulo), at his retrospective exhibition organized by the Caixa de Barcelona and Valencia’s IVAM, and at the Venice Biennale in 1990.
