Role: PI (MPI: Bronwyn Myers) 2019-2021 Training Peer Recovery Coaches to Promote Retention and Adherence to MOUD among Low- Income Adults Foundation for Opioid Response Efforts (FORE) Total Costs: $555,934 This study aims to refine training models for peer recovery coach (PRC) interventions to support retention and adherence to medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) and work with policy makers in Detroit, MI and Baltimore, MD to develop and a sustainable training model for PRCs. Role: PI (MPI: Julia Felton) 2 Updated July 2020 2019-2021 Peer-Delivered Behavioral Activation Intervention to Improve Adherence to MAT Among Low- Income, Minority Individuals with OUD 1R61AT010799-01 Total Costs: $804,521 This two-phase study aims to develop and evaluate a peer recovery coach-delivered behavioral activation intervention that can be sustainably implemented to improve retention in medication treatment for OUD for low-income, minority individuals with OUD in Baltimore City. If the R61 milestones are met, the project can transition to the 3-year R33 phase (total costs: $3,483,207) Role: PI 2016-2021 Hybrid Effectiveness-Implementation Trial for ART Adherence and Substance Use in HIV Care in South Africa K23DA041901 Total costs: $919,934 This project aims to evaluate the effectiveness and implementation of a lay counselor-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy intervention for HIV medication adherence and substance use in primary HIV care in Cape Town, South Africa. The training plan proposes advanced training in implementation science. Role: PI 2019-2021 Biomarker Assessment of ART Adherence and Alcohol Use in Dried Blood Spots K23DA041901-05S1 Total costs: $38,124 This administrative supplement to K23DA041901 will add two biomarkers of ART adherence and alcohol use to further validate clinical trial outcomes. Both biomarkers will be assessed using dried blood spots (DBS), including tenofovir diphosphate (TDF-DiP) for ART adherence and phosphatidylethanol (PEth) for alcohol. Role: PI 2019-2020 DC Research Infrastructure Building & Initiative to Reach, Engage, and Retain MAT patients with OUD CTN-0088 (NIDA HEAL Initiative) Total costs: $1,108,038 This study is evaluating barriers and facilitators to utilization of opioid use disorder treatment in DC (Unity clinics in Wards 7 and 8) and identifying and targeting missed opportunities from community settings for outreach and engagement of patients with OUD who are not engaged in care. The overarching goal is to develop approaches to address these overdose prevention and treatment gaps in DC OUD treatment system. Role: Co-Investigator (PI: Schottenfeld) 2018-2020 A Novel Values-based Intervention to Increase Endocrine Therapy Adherence Among Breast Cancer Survivors NIH R21CA218723 Total costs: $414,900 This project is developing and piloting a brief, innovative, low-cost personal values-based intervention for promoting ET adherence that offers the potential to benefit both breast cancer survivors and the broader healthcare system using a potentially scalable approach. I provide adherence measurement guidance and input on intervention adaptation. Role: Co-I (PI: Joanna Arch, PhD; CU Boulder) 2018-2020 Geospatial and Social Influences on Substance Use in an Endemic HIV Setting in Cape Town, South Africa UMCP Dean’s Research Initiative Collaborative Proposal 3 Updated July 2020 Total Costs: $10,000 This study examines social and geospatial influences on substance use in Cape Town, South Africa Role: PI 2019-2021 The Effect of a Behavioral Activation Program on Decreasing Depression in Adolescents in an Outpatient Clinical Setting HDVCH Pediatric Research Fund Application Total costs: $30,000 This project aims to adapt and evaluate a behavioral activation treatment for depression administered in a real-world outpatient primary care setting. Role: Co-I (Felton, Triemstra) Past 2018-2020 Utilizing Peer Recovery Advocates to Implement an Evidence-based Intervention to Decrease Substance Use Among Low-income Minority Adults UMB-UMCP Research Innovation Seed Grant Total Costs: $99,986 This project proposes a collaboration between researchers at UMD Psychology and UMB Nursing to adapt behavioral activation for use by peer recovery coach advocates and to pilot the modified approach and training procedures at a community health center in Baltimore, MD.
