33 EDGE ou’ve seen Hank Azaria’s face a hundred times and inte rview heard his voice a thousand Y more. Or maybe ten thou- sand more. Fans of The Simpsons Hank Azaria know him as the man behind the voices of ill-tempered bartender Moe Syzslak, gluttonous police chief Chauncey Wiggum, sad-sack Comic Book Guy, hillbilly Cletus Spuckler and America’s favorite convenience store clerk, Apu (“Thank you come again”) Nahasapeemapetilon. Azaria’s over- the-top film roles include fork-flinging superhero The Blue Raja ( Mystery Men ), 1950s sports legend Patches O’Houlihan ( Dodge Ball ), megalo- maniacal pharaoh Kahmunrah ( Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian ) and inept houseboy Agador Spartacus ( The Birdcage ). To this long list of indelible characters add Jim Brockmire, the title character in IFC’s Brockmire , a new comedy co-starring Amanda Peet. The show follows the travails of a legendary announcer banished to the bush leagues after a profanity-filled on-air meltdown. Gerry Strauss talked to e Azaria about what it takes to slip into c n e r w the shoes of one unique character a l d i v after another…and what makes his a d y b newest role the culmination of a long, o t o h personal journey. • February 26, 2021 Amazon Warehouse Workers In
February 26, 2021 Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer, Alabama are voting to form a union with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). We are the writers of feature films and television series. All of our work is done under union contracts whether it appears on Amazon Prime, a different streaming service, or a television network. Unions protect workers with essential rights and benefits. Most importantly, a union gives employees a seat at the table to negotiate fair pay, scheduling and more workplace policies. Deadline Amazon accepts unions for entertainment workers, and we believe warehouse workers deserve the same respect in the workplace. We strongly urge all Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer to VOTE UNION YES. • Strategic Management and Global Competition Individual Paper
STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT AND GLOBAL COMPETITION INDIVIDUAL PAPER THE WALT DISNEY COMPANY AND ITS ACQUISITION STRATEGY: PIXAR, MARVEL & LUCASFILM Li Chi Ching Jane Strategic Management and Global Competition, Fall 2016 December 1, 2016 Abstract In this paper, I will analyze the rationale behind Disney’s acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm and the subsequent impacts they have on Disney as a whole. Disney has always been relying on its strategic model “The Ripple Effect” for sustainable growth—through creation of a film asset, value can be infused into an array of its related entertainment assets. And a popular film acts like a wave maker in creating ripples that go down to all of Disney’s businesses—success of films are central to Disney’s overall performance. Yet, the absence of successful films from Disney starting from the late 1990s stopped the Disney model from working, resulting in a decline in profits in various business segments within Disney. In light of this problem, Disney chose the path of acquisitions— Pixar was acquired in 2006, while Marvel and Lucasfilm were acquired in 2009 and 2012 respectively. All three acquisitions have one central goal—to find Disney’s way back to the wave makers, and hence make the Disney model work again. The announcement by Disney that it would buy its partner Pixar at $7.4 billion in 2006 once shook the world—many were either having doubts on how such an acquisition would turn out or considering the valuation as too high. Most acquisitions, particularly in media, are value-destroying as opposed to value-creating.

Exporting Canadian Feature Films in Global Markets TRENDS, OPPORTUNITIES AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS MARIA DE ROSA | MARILYN BURGESS COMMUNICATIONS MDR (A DIVISION OF NORIBCO INC.) APRIL 2017 PRODUCED WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF 1 EXPORTING CANADIAN FEATURE FILMS IN GLOBAL MARKETS Acknowledgements This study was commissioned by the Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA), in partnership with the Association québécoise de la production médiatique (AQPM), the Cana- da Media Fund (CMF), and Telefilm Canada. The following report solely reflects the views of the authors. Findings, conclusions or recom- mendations expressed in this report are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the funders of this report, who are in no way bound by any recommendations con- tained herein. 2 EXPORTING CANADIAN FEATURE FILMS IN GLOBAL MARKETS Executive Summary Goals of the Study The goals of this study were three-fold: 1. To identify key trends in international sales of feature films generally and Canadian independent feature films specifically; 2. To provide intelligence on challenges and opportunities to increase foreign sales; 3. To identify policies, programs and initiatives to support foreign sales in other jurisdic- tions and make recommendations to ensure that Canadian initiatives are competitive. For the purpose of this study, Canadian film exports were defined as sales of rights. These included pre-sales, sold in advance of the completion of films and often used to finance pro- duction, and sales of rights to completed feature films. In other jurisdictions foreign sales are being measured in a number of ways, including the number of box office admissions, box of- fice revenues, and sales of rights.

  • Comedians, Characters, Cable Guys & Copyright Convolutions
Legal Lessons in On-Stage Character Development: Comedians, Characters, Cable Guys & Copyright Convolutions Clay Calvert⊗ ABSTRACT This article addresses the trials and tribulations faced by stand-up comedians who seek copyright protection for on-stage characters they create, often during solo performances. The article initially explores the current, confused state of the law surrounding the copyrightability of fictional characters. The doctrinal muddle is magnified for comedians because the case law that addresses the fictional character facet of copyright jurisprudence overwhelmingly involves characters developed within the broader framework of plots and storylines found in traditional media artifacts such as books, comic strips, cartoons and movies. The article then deploys the 2014 federal court ruling in Azaria v. Bierko as a timely analytical springboard for addressing comedic-character copyright issues. Finally, the article offers multiple tips and suggestions for comedians and actors seeking copyright protection in their on- stage characters. I. INTRODUCTION The Whacky World of Jonathan Winters aired on television from 1972 through 1974.1 The humor of its star, Jonathan Winters,2 came primarily “from his construction of outrageously fantastic situations and characters.”3 Those characters included the Oldest Airline Stewardess4 and, perhaps most notably, ⊗ Professor & Brechner Eminent Scholar in Mass Communication and Director of the Marion B.
