What's new in SmoothWall Express 3.1 SP4: Package version updates: at: 3.1.20 c_icap: 0.5.2 c_icap_modules: 0.4.5. SmoothWall Express is a freely distributed and open source distribution of Linux founded by Lawrence Manning, Richard Morrell, Jon Fautley and Tom Ellis in summer 2000. It has been designed from the ground up to be used as a powerful and secure firewall or router. Designed for ease of use, as well as to be simple to install by home users with no knowledge of Linux technologies, the distribution can be configured via a web-based user interface using any modern web browser. Availability, boot options and supported platforms. The project is available for download as two CD-size ISO images that can be used to install the operating system on a local disk drive. The ISOs can be burned onto blank CDs or written to USB thumb drives. Both 32-bit and 64-bit hardware platforms are supported at this time. The boot menu allows users to install the SmoothWall Express firewall with default settings or in advanced mode. In addition, it lets you to convert the ISO image to bootable flash, run the OS in single-user mode, as well as to explore the hardware and system. The installation. The entire installation process takes place in the Linux console (text-mode). If you choose the standard installation method, you will only have to partition the hard disk drive in order to install the operating system. Keep in mind that this is a server system and it has no graphical environment. Therefore, in order to enter the configuration interface, users must access the http://smoothwall:81 or http://smoothwall:441 using a web browser on another machine. The default username is "dial" and users should set a password for it from the get-go. Bottom line. All in all, SmoothWall Express is a great little distribution capable of transforming any low-end computer into a hardened Internet firewall. It is easily installable and configurable by anyone, without prior knowledge of Linux technologies. Download Your Smoothwall Software. [Update: Fixed] BBC iPlayer down, users getting "Sorry, this content can only be played within the UK" error. Just in case you’re trying to get your head around why BBC iPlayer isn’t working, you might find solace in the fact that you aren’t the only one facing an issue with the service. A quick look at the micro-blogging site — Twitter — conveys there are many others affected by the same issue. As per reports, while some say the service isn’t working or broken for them, others say that it throws an error or notification stating – “Sorry, this content can only be played within the UK”. For a quick glance, here’s how some of the complainants word the problem: iPlayer incorrectly telling me that I’m not in the UK. Also can’t watch via smart TV. Lots of people seem to be reporting the same issue. Can you advise (Source) Is @BBCiPlayer down for everyone in #EnglandThinking face My screen says ” This content is not available in your location ” (Source) Mine’s gone too. iPlayer thinks I’m not in the UK – I am and I pay my licence. (Source) Many individuals have even shared images of the error message that’s popping up on their screens. Here’s one such example: Of course, the error message would have been understandable if the individuals were trying to view content outside the UK, however, that isn’t the case here. Viewers living in the UK are getting the message and some even claim that they were prevented from viewing content while in the middle of watching it. Down detector – a popular service that gives information about live outages – also conveys that BBC iPlayer is indeed going through a glitch in the UK and other countries as can be seen in the image below: Any official word on the matter? Negative, as yet. We’re yet to locate a word from the official service channels or their social media handles. Rest assured, we’re keeping tabs on all related developments, and will update this page with relevant info as and when we come across any. So in case you’re encountering the problem discussed here, stay tuned to PiunikaWeb or bookmark this page for more details. Update 1 (June 11) 06:31 pm (IST): It seems that other BBC services are affected by a glitch as well. BBC Sport — via Twitter — confirmed that they are currently experiencing some technical difficulties affecting the website and app. A fix for the issue is in the works but there’s no ETA. It’s highly likely that the two issues are linked and will be fixed together. Nevertheless, we’ll continue tracking all developments. 10:38 pm (IST): The problem has apparently been fixed according to information shared by the official BBC iPlayer account on Twitter. PiunikaWeb started as purely an investigative tech journalism website with main focus on ‘breaking’ or ‘exclusive’ news. In no time, our stories got picked up by the likes of Forbes, Foxnews, Gizmodo, TechCrunch, Engadget, The Verge, Macrumors, and many others. Want to know more about us? Head here..

  • Ubuntu Enables Advanced Computer Research Into Killer Diseases
Case Study Ubuntu enables advanced computer research into killer diseases Delivering training courses to researchers in developing countries – Ubuntu was the first choice for The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. Background The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is charity at the forefront of research into the study of the genomes of the world’s major killer diseases such as malaria, typhoid fever and the ‘superbug’ MRSA. The Trust aims to offers workshops for free to countries in the developing world. Giving their researchers up-to- date training in the fast-moving arena of analysis, and providing them with the mechanisms to keep up with new developments. In June 2006, the Trust ran the first of their workshop project in Uruguay. The courseprovided an introduction to the bioinformatics tools freely available on the Internet. It focussed primarily on The Human Genome data and gave students hands-on training in the use of public databases, and web-based sequence analysis tools. In addition to training researchers from all over South America the Wellcome Trust donated high-powered computers, essential for analysing the genomes, to the Instituto de Higiene, Uruguay. Business challenge The Instituto de Higiene set up a permanent training room to house the computers, and act as a centre for workshops in South America. The Institutes Informatics Systems Group needed to ensure that it was possible to install the training room computers, and networks, anywhere in the world that offers reliable electrical power and a connection to the Internet. That’s where Ubuntu came in. Ubuntu solution The Systems Group integrated Ubuntu into a flexible, self-contained training room that was straightforward enough for local staff to administer.

VIKASIETOINEN PALOMUURI LAHDEN AMMATTIKORKEAKOULU Tekniikan ala Tietotekniikan koulutusohjelma Tietotekniikka Opinnäytetyö Kevät 2013 Päivi Viitajoki Lahden ammattikorkeakoulu Koulutusohjelma VIITAJOKI, PÄIVI: Vikasietoinen palomuuri Tietotekniikan opinnäytetyö, 50 sivua Kevät 2013 TIIVISTELMÄ Vuonna 1988 löydettiin ensimmäinen virus Internetistä, minkä jälkeen alettiin kehittää palomuuria. Siitä on tullut tärkein tapa suojata sisäverkkoa ulkopuolisilta tunkeutujilta. Palomuuria voidaan verrata portinvartijaan, joka tietää ketä voidaan päästää sisään ja ketkä tulisi jättää ulos. Palomuurit omaavat monia ominaisuuksia, joita verkossa voidaan hyödyntää. DHCP vähentää verkkoasetusten manuaalista konfigurointia ja NAT lisää verkon turvallisuutta sekä vähentää IP-osoitteiden tarvetta. Tietoliikennettä priorisoidaan QoS:n avulla. Vikasieto-ominaisuus on olemassa monissa nykyisissä palomuureissa. Palomuurissa
