Leader (1918-2013), a native of York, Pennsylvania, rose from the anonymous status of chicken farmer's son and Gettysburg College undergraduate to become, first a State Senator, and then the 36th governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. A steadfast liberal in a traditionally conservative state, Leader spent his brief time in the governor's office (1955-1959) fighting uphill battles and blazing courageous trails. He overhauled the state's corrupt patronage system; streamlined and humanized its mental health apparatus; and, when a black family moved into the white enclave of Levittown, took a brave stand in favor of integration. -

S w a r t h m o r e COLLEGE BULLETIN, ALUM NI ISSUE JAN U ARY, 1974 Theodore Woo< Swarthmore Inaugurates Eleventh President On a brilliant October day, as the tulip poplars shed their leaves around the assembled guests in the Scott Outdoor Auditorium, Theodore Wood Friend III was inaugurated the eleventh president of Swarthmore College. The simple ceremony presided over by Stephen G. Lax ’41, chairman of the Board of Managers, included two selections by the College Chorus, members of the orchestra, and guest instrumentalists, under the direction of Peter Gram Swing, and an address by President Friend. The academic procession was composed of members of the Board, Faculty, Student Council, and distinguished visitors. Among the nearly twenty college presidents who attended were those from Williams, President Friend’s alma mater; Pomona, which has an exchange program with Swarthmore; the University of Pennsylvania, Barnard, a number of nearby institutions, and some Quaker colleges. Some 50 other representatives from colleges, universities, and other institutions of higher learning also attended. In his address President Friend spoke of “the original aims of the College, of authority and responsibility in its current organization, of the principles of excellence and equality, and of reason and faith in the temper of all that we do here.” He found occasion to quote from the inaugural remarks of the sixth president of Swarthmore, Joseph Swain, in speaking of the relationship of the various con stituencies of the College to each other. “Perhaps because he, as I, came here from a state university, I easily share his perspective. -

PENNSYLVANIA HISTORY VOL. XXI APRIL, 1954 No. 2 THE FAILURE OF THE "HOLY EXPERIMENT" IN PENNSYLVANIA, 1684-1699 By EDWIN B. BRONNER* HE founding of colonial Pennsylvania was a great success. TLet there be no misunderstanding in regard to that matter. The facts speak for themselves. From the very beginning colonists came to the Delaware Valley in great numbers. Philadelphia grew rapidly and was eventually the largest town in the British colonies. The area under cultivation expanded steadily; Pennsylvania con- tinued to grow throughout the colonial period, and her pecuniary success has never been questioned. The Proprietor granted his freemen an enlightened form of government, and gradually accepted a series of proposals by the citizenry for liberalizing the constitution. As an outgrowth of the Quaker belief that all men are children of God, the colony granted religious toleration to virtually all who wished to settle, made a practice of treating the Indians in a fair and just manner, opposed (as a matter of conscience) resorting to war, experimented with enlightened principles in regard to crime and punishment, and fostered advanced ideas concerning the equality of the sexes and the enslavement of human beings. As a colonizing venture, the founding of Pennsylvania was a triumph for William Penn and those who joined with him in the undertaking. On the other hand, conditions which prevailed in Pennsylvania in the first decades caused Penn untold grief, and results fell far short of what he had envisaged when he wrote concerning the *Dr. Edwin B. It is also rich in history. The county’s many historic farms, villages, and winding country roads contribute to a strong “sense of place” that appeals to residents and visitors alike. The people who have called Somerset County home for thousands of years have created a unique cultural environment unlike any other. From the ancient settlements in the “Turkeyfoot” region of the south, to the rolling farm country of Brothers Valley in the center, to the coal patch towns of the north, history is everywhere in Somerset County. Something interesting always seems to lie just around the next bend in the road. The county’s development was shaped by its hydrology and rugged topography. Although its forested hills hid immeasurable mineral wealth just below the surface they also limited the areas suitable for settlement and agriculture. -

Kintersburg Bridge, PA-32-05
THE THEODORE BURR COVERED BRIDGE SOCIETY OF PENNSYLVANIA, INC. VOLUME 40 - NUMBER 1 WINTER 2017 Kintersburg Bridge, PA-32-05 J. S. Fleming built this bridge across Crooked Creek in 1877 at a cost of $893. The 68 ft., single span crossing is one of only five Howe Truss covered bridges in the Commonwealth. It was named for Isaac Kinter, a local shopkeeper. Bypassed many years ago by a modern bridge, it is located off Tanoma Road on Musser Road in Rayne Township. One of four remaining covered bridges in Indiana County, PA, all are easily visited in one afternoon tour. - Photo by Thomas E.
