1 Carthage was indeed destroyed Introduction to Carthage According to classical texts (Polybe 27) Carthage’s history started with the Phoenician queen Elissa who was ousted from power in Tyre and in 814 BC settled with her supporters in what is now known as Carthage. There might have been conflicts with the local population and the local Berber kings, but the power of the Phoenician settlement Carthage kept growing. The Phoenicians based in the coastal cities of Lebanon constituted in the Mediterranean Sea a large maritime trade power but Carthage gradually became the hub for all East Mediterranean trade by the end of the 6th century BC. Thus Carthage evolved from being a Phoenician settlement to becoming the capital of an empire (Fantar, M.H., 1998, chapter 3). The local and the Phoenician religions mixed (e.g. Tanit and Baal) and in brief Carthage developed from its establishment in roughly 800 BC and already from 6th century BC had become the centre for a large empire of colonies across Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Spain, and the islands of Mallorca, Sardinia, and Sicily (Heimburger, 2008 p.36). Oslo, Norway, May 2019 2 Abstract This study has explored the changed relationship between the church and the Roman Empire between the second and the fourth century as presented in the books Apology by Tertullian and The Death of the Persecutors by Lactantius and Life of Constantine by Eusebius. Tertullian presents the adverse condition of the church-state relationship at the end of the second century. He shows the vulnerable situation of the church and the church practitioners under the Pagan emperors. The Apology shows the persecution and its nature Christian had to face. On the other hand, The Death of the persecutors represents the time at the end of the third century when Christianity encountered The Great Persecution. -

The Mini-Columbarium in Carthage's Yasmina
THE MINI-COLUMBARIUM IN CARTHAGE’S YASMINA CEMETERY by CAITLIN CHIEN CLERKIN (Under the Direction of N. J. Norman) ABSTRACT The Mini-Columbarium in Carthage’s Roman-era Yasmina cemetery combines regional construction methods with a Roman architectural form to express the privileged status of its wealthy interred; this combination deploys monumental architectural language on a small scale. This late second or early third century C.E. tomb uses the very North African method of vaulting tubes, in development in this period, for an aggrandizing vaulted ceiling in a collective tomb type derived from the environs of Rome, the columbarium. The use of the columbarium type signals its patrons’ engagement with Roman mortuary trends—and so, with culture of the center of imperial power— to a viewer and imparts a sense of group membership to both interred and visitor. The type also, characteristically, provides an interior space for funerary ritual and commemoration, which both sets the Mini-Columbarium apart at Yasmina and facilitates normative Roman North African funerary ritual practice, albeit in a communal context. Carthage Was the Center Or Capital City of the Ancient Carthaginian
Carthage was the center or capital city of the ancient Carthaginian civilization, on the eastern side of the Lake of Tunis in what is now the Tunis Governorate in Tunisia. Carthage was widely considered the most important trading hub of the Ancient Mediterranean and was arguably one of the most affluent cities of the Ancient World. The city developed from a Phoenician colony into the capital of a Punic empire which dominated large parts of the Southwest Mediterranean during the first millennium BC. The legendary Queen Dido is regarded as the founder of the city, though her historicity has been questioned. The ancient Carthage city was destroyed by the Roman Republic in the Third Punic War in 146 BC and then re-developed as Roman Carthage, which became the major city of the Roman Empire in the province of Africa. The city was sacked and destroyed by Umayyad forces after the Battle of Carthage in 698 to prevent it from being reconquered by the Byzantine Empire. It remained occupied during the Muslim period and was used as a fort by the Muslims until the Hafsid period when it was taken by the Crusaders with its inhabitants massacred during the Eighth Crusade. Catheral of St. Vincent de Paul: is a Roman Catholic church located in Tunis, Tunisia. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Vincent de Paul, patron saint of charity. It is the episcopal see of the Archdiocese of Tunis and is situated at Place de l'Indépendence in Ville Nouvelle, a crossroads between Avenue Habib Bourguiba and Avenue de France, opposite the French embassy. -

The idea is horrifying. I always thought that the Phoenicians were a civilized race. P.D. Roberts (2001) Forum, Archaeology Odyssey 4(3):10-11 FROM INFANT SACRIFICE TO THE ABC’S1 The Phoenicians showed extraordinary acumen in commerce and communications, colonizing the Western Mediterranean ahead of the Greeks and disseminating their most important invention — alphabetic script. At the same time, they earned a reputation for piracy and deceit, and showed extraordinary depravity in practicing infant sacrifice and ritual prostitution, according to the Classical and Biblical sources. Depraved civilizer, or civilized depraver — the Phoenician presented something of a paradox. During the nineteenth century, and through much of the twentieth, European artists, writers, and scholars solved this paradox by erasing the civilizer, downplaying the significance of the Phoenician development of the alphabet, and leaving only the depraved and exotic Oriental. Formed in an environment of racism, imperialism, and nationalism, the influence of such interpretations of the Phoenicians has now faded, to be superseded by ‘post’ interpretations — post-modern, post-colonial, post-structural. But recently certain scholars have abandoned the conventional infant sacrifice paradigm in favor of a narrative that emphasizes the Phoenicians’ contributions to civilization while expunging their rites of infant sacrifice. The year 1987 was a defining moment for both professional and popular acceptance of this revised narrative. -

KLEIJWEGT Date submitted November 1996 SUMMARY The 'Romanization' of the African provinces of Mauretania Tingitana and Mauretania Caesariensis was in fact a two-way process of exchange between Roman and African elements which resulted in a uniquely Romano-African civilization. The imperial cult highlights issues common to all Romanization processes, such as ruler-subject interaction and the role of local initiative in bringing about change, as well as unique issues such as the impact of politics on emperor-worship. The success of the imperial cult was hampered by the fact that only a select few - notably the wealthy local elite - derived direct benefit from the process, and by the fact that, because the pre-Roman Mauretaniae had no established ruler-cults, the imperial cult failed to assimilate with local tradition. As a result, the cult was unable either to make a decisive impact on the Romanization of the Mauretanians, or to achieve any real religious unity among them. Roman era Carthage and Lepcis Magna a comparative study of the Romanization and the Libyphoenician survival of the two leading cities of Africa Proconsularis Andreas Lagaard, Historisk Institutt, UiO, HIS4090 Vår 2008 1 Preface: This thesis started off as an interest in the Phoenicians sparked off by Maria Eugenia Aubet's The Phoenicians and the West and especially her mention of the lost literary heritage from these peoples which intrigued me to no end. So when I had to choose a subject fro my work I was really interested in doing a piece on them and their lost history. However there were no thesis councilors available for that time period and I had to move my chosen period into the realm of Antiquity when the Phoenician homelands were reaching their historical dusk so to speak. I vacillated in the beginning between doing a study on the Alexandrian siege of Tyre with possible comparative avenues of research pertaining to the previous sieges/attacks on the island city state and a study on the Western Phoenicians and their zone of influence. As Jon Iddeng, my future thesis councilor to be, was an expert in Latin Literature and the Romans in general I chose to follow a path of study detailing their archenemies the Punic peoples. At first I in my naivety thought that the whole Punic realm of the Western Mediterranean would be a fitting subject for study. I quickly realized the vast magnitude of such an undertaking and scaled down my subject to first just the Punic peoples in Africa and then later to just the populations of Punic Africa's heartlands in Tunisia and Libya. -

Such a catalogue is clearly far from exhaustive. It does not include, for example, any newly identified quarries published in the most recent ASMOSIA volume, though it does include references in this volume to quarries already incorporated into the gazetteer are noted.1 In practice, every urban centre in the Roman Empire, in addition to many rural sites, had one or more local quarries from which they extracted the bulk of their stone. The majority of these local quarries, however, are unexplored and unpublished. There must be hundreds if not thousands of other quarries that have yet to be documented. The aim of this catalogue, therefore, is to draw attention to those quarries that are known about. It is not a complete record but it is hoped that it might form the basis for future research. In this sense it is intended to build on and update some of the existing broader surveys of Roman quarrying, like those produced by Dworakowska and Braemer.2 Where possible the sites are quarries that have been identified as ‘Roman’. In some cases, however, it has been necessary to include sites at which stone was obviously quarried in the Roman period even if no traces of this activity survive. -

Carthage in the Mediterranean World Dexter Hoyos The Carthaginians, writes Plutarch, are ‘bitter, grim, subservient to rulers and arrogant to subordinates, at their worst in moments of fear, at their most savage in moments of anger. Once they have made a decision, they persevere in it. No amusement, no charm softens their severity. [Had a Cleon or Alcibiades treated them humorously], they would have put both of them to death for frivolously insulting them.’ These censorious generalisations about a people 250 years dead give an idea of how the Greeks and Romans viewed the greatest state in the pre-Roman western Mediterranean. The impression is still widespread today, partly thanks to Gustave Flaubert’s Salammbô (1862) with its deliberately exotic Carthaginian world of oriental luxury, barbarity and amorality. Hannibal did his country’s memory no good, either, by invading Italy with non-classical resources – African elephants and Numidian cavalry – and winning battles by tricks and ambushes, censured by Livy as Punicae artes.1 In reality, the Carthaginians were part of the Greek and Roman world from early on, steadily assimilating more and more from it and contributing much in return. The city was founded, traditionally, in 814 or 813 BC by political refugees from Tyre in Phoenicia, led by their queen Dido; and archaeological finds dating to the mid-eight century BC suggest that the tradition was not too far wrong.
