  • Stories of the South Peninsula
Stories of the South Peninsula Historical research, stories and heritage tourism opportunities in the South Peninsula AFRICANSOUTH TOURISM The peninsula from Cape Point Nature Reserve Prepared for the City of Cape Town by C. Postlethwayt, M. Attwell & K. Dugmore Ström June 2014 Making progress possible. Together. Background The primary objective of this project was to prepare a series of ‘story packages’ providing the content for historical interpretive stories of the ‘far’ South Peninsula. Stories cover the geographical area of Chapman’s Peak southwards to include Imhoff, Ocean View, Masiphumelele, Kommetjie, Witsand, Misty Cliffs and Scarborough, Plateau Road, Cape Point, Smitswinkel Bay to Miller’s Point, Boulders, Simon’s Town, Red Hill, Glencairn and Fish Hoek to Muizenberg. The purposes for which these stories are to be told are threefold, namely to support tourism development; to stimulate local interest; and to promote appropriate and sustainable protection of heritage resources through education, stimulation of interest and appropriate knowledge. To this end, the linking of historical stories and tourism development requires an approach to story-telling that goes beyond the mere recording of historic events. The use of accessible language has been a focus. Moreover, it requires an approach that both recognises the iconic, picture-postcard image of parts of Cape Town (to which tourists are drawn initially), but extends it further to address the particular genius loci that is Cape Town’s ‘Deep South’, in all its complexity and coloured by memory, ambivalences and contradictory experiences. We believe there is a need to balance the more conventional approach, which selects people or events deemed worthy of commemoration (for example, the Battle of Muizenberg) to tell the story of places, by interweaving popular memory and culture into these recordings (for example, the rich Muslim culture that existed in Simon’s Town before the removal under the Group Areas Act).

  • Hunger Is Growing, Emergency Food Aid Is Dwindling
Hunger is growing, emergency food aid is dwindling “Community kitchens crying out for help and support” EDP Report to WCG Humanitarian Cluster Committee 13 July 2020 Introduction Food insecurity in poor and vulnerable communities in Cape Town and the Western Cape was prevalent before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic (CoCT Food Systems and Food Security Study, 2014; Western Cape Government Household Food and Nutrition Security Strategic Framework, 2016). The pandemic has exacerbated food insecurity in poor and vulnerable communities in three ways: 1. Impact of lockdown. Lockdown, and curtailment of economic activities since end-March, has neGatively affected the livelihoods of the ‘existing poor’, i.e. street traders, spaza shops, small scale fishers and farmers, seasonal farm workers, as well as the circumstances of the ‘newly poor’, through job losses and small business closures. A recent Oxfam report confirmed this trend worldwide: “New hunGer hotspots are also emerGinG. Middle-income countries such as India, South Africa, and Brazil are experiencinG rapidly risinG levels of hunGer as millions of people that were just about managing have been tipped over the edge by the pandemic”. (The Hunger Virus: How Covid-19 is fuelling hunger in a hungry world, Oxfam, July 2020.) 2. Poor performance of national government. Research by Prof Jeremy Seekings has shown that “the total amount of food distributed (through food parcels and feeding schemes) in the first three months of the lockdown was a tiny fraction of what was needed urGently – and was even a small fraction of what would ordinarily have been distributed without a lockdown.

  • Chapter Four a Needs Analysis for Health Interventions – Case Study of Kayamandi
CHAPTER FOUR A NEEDS ANALYSIS FOR HEALTH INTERVENTIONS – CASE STUDY OF KAYAMANDI 4.1 Introduction In the 1980s, the WHO emphasised that health and well-being of individuals are closely connected with social, cultural, physical, economic and other factors inside living areas or towns (Burlington, 2005). Against this background, it can be assumed that individuals living and growing up in extremely impoverished settings should therefore have the greatest need for health interventions that will enhance and strengthen their health and well-being. In regard to the intervention presented in this thesis, and undertaken in a very impoverished community, a needs analysis was outlined beforehand to 1) identify prevalent risks and resources in the specific setting, 2) immure the intervention in its surrounding and 3) adequately adjust the life-orientated modules for its participants. The information for the needs analysis was drawn from regular field trips and field reports, an extensive literature review (e.g. maps, official statistics, published and unpublished articles), and photographic documentation. The methodology for the needs analysis is described in chapter 6. The following section describes the particular case of Kayamandi (translated as ‘pleasant home’) in order to highlight the social, health, security and educational infrastructures in a disadvantaged community6 in South Africa that have resulted from historic, socio-economic, as well as political processes in the country. 4.2 The History and Geographical Development of Kayamandi The town Stellenbosch is located 30 kilometres east of Cape Town in the Western Cape Province. It is the second oldest town (founded in 1679) in South Africa (Dennerlein & Adami, 2004), and historically a centre of Afrikanerdom during Apartheid in which the university played a central role in educating the Apartheid elite.
