  • Varsity Jazz
Varsity Jazz Jazz at Reading University 1951 - 1984 By Trevor Bannister 1 VARSITY JAZZ Jazz at Reading University 1951 represented an important year for Reading University and for Reading’s local jazz scene. The appearance of Humphrey Lyttelton’s Band at the University Rag Ball, held at the Town Hall on 28th February, marked the first time a true product of the Revivalist jazz movement had played in the town. That it should be the Lyttelton band, Britain’s pre-eminent group of the time, led by the ex-Etonian and Grenadier Guardsman, Humphrey Lyttelton, made the event doubly important. Barely three days later, on 3rd March, the University Rag Committee presented a second event at the Town Hall. The Jazz Jamboree featured the Magnolia Jazz Band led by another trumpeter fast making a name for himself, the colourful Mick Mulligan. It would be the first of his many visits to Reading. Denny Dyson provided the vocals and the Yew Tree Jazz Band were on hand for interval support. There is no further mention of jazz activity at the university in the pages of the Reading Standard until 1956, when the clarinettist Sid Phillips led his acclaimed touring and broadcasting band on stage at the Town Hall for the Rag Ball on 25th February, supported by Len Lacy and His Sweet Band. Considering the intense animosity between the respective followers of traditional and modern jazz, which sometimes reached venomous extremes, the Rag Committee took a brave decision in 1958 to book exponents of the opposing schools. The Rag Ball at the Olympia Ballroom on 20th February, saw Ken Colyer’s Jazz Band, which followed the zealous path of its leader in keeping rigidly to the disciplines of New Orleans jazz, sharing the stage with the much cooler and sophisticated sounds of a quartet led by Tommy Whittle, a tenor saxophonist noted for his work with the Ted Heath Orchestra.

  • Gruppo È Nella Classica Formazione in Quartetto Con Elton Dean, Mike Ratledge, Hugh Hopper E Robert Wyatt

Re-issues Reviews Home To the reviews index News A healthy nihilism goes all bellicose for the poet who turns his pen into a sword. Interviews In the most Orwellian of years Joseph Smalkowski, or Copernicus, decided it was time Reviews for his verses to not only produce a verbal music but also put some external sound to the words - and got himself a kindred-minded band. "Let the musicians declare war!!" goes Index "I Know What I Think", and they do so, indeed, with a full-blown aural onslaught onto DVD which the leader lays his punky stentorian chant. Deranged delight! - unlike the mournful Magazines recital of "Let Me Rest" clocking at 11.11. Books But the opener "I Won't Hurt You" delivers on its sweet, slithery, soulful promise that Specials either skanks or slides to form the most romantic song Copernicus could offer. Still, COPERNICUS - being himself he couldn't help but break such an innocence in the sonic terror of Photo Nothing Exists "Nagasaki", hung on an urgent, oscillating and scintillating rock 'n' roll guitar riff. It's here that the poet denies the existence of everything, him included, so "Atomic Nevermore" Links Nevermore 1984 spreads its spoken word over the emotional desert which somehow makes the listener MoonJune 2010 explore the album's dry landscape again. DME/Personal ***1/2 Guestbook Mail me The original angularity seeps away for guitar to feed on - and feedback - on a honeysuckle vine. Having tapped into the fusion fad of the day with "Bundles", the machinists might have thought they arrived at the right station, yet the restless passenger in Allan Holdsworth knew better.

In December 1973, it added guitarist Allan Holdsworth (recently with Jon Hiseman’s Tempest, and previously Nucleus) to its line-up, which then consisted of Soft Machine founding member and keyboardist Mike Ratledge, along with pianist and saxophonist Karl Jenkins, bass player Roy Babbington, and drummer John Marshall. Jenkins and Ratledge then composed a whole new repertoire, which the band road-tested on extensive tours of North America and continental Europe in the first half of 1974. That material eventually made up Soft Machine’s eighth recording, the first not named after its order of release: the album Bundles, widely acknowledged as a jazz-rock / fusion classic. When released by EMI’s Harvest Label in early 1975, Bundles would secure Soft Machine’s role in the transcontinental jazz-rock pantheon alongside Return To Forever and Mahavishnu Orchestra in the USA, and Nucleus, Brand X, and Isotope in the UK. Soft Machine’s status in the international jazz/rock avant-garde was widely apparent even before Bundles’ official release.

  • Dave Hartl's 2018 Top Ten (Or So) Most Influential Albums
Dave Hartl’s 2018 Top Ten (Or So) Most Influential Albums It’s time once again to look back and do that annual tradition of picking out the 10 or so most influential albums I heard in the past year. Not the most popular, or even the best, but what made me think the most as a musician. You can always go to http://www.davehartl.com/top10.html and look at other years’ postings. The links there go all the way back to 1998, when I started this with George Tucker. It’s a way of hearing about great music you might otherwise miss. If you want to contribute, please write to [email protected] with your own list and your contribution will be added to this document online for future downloads. This is why I do this! It always gives me some great recommendations for what to listen to that would be off my radar otherwise. So don’t be shy! Last year, Brian Groder, Jack Loughhead, Dylan Taylor, Bob Kimmel, and Kaz Yoshihara gave me some great things to listen to. The Top 10, in no particular order: 1.) Soft Machine: Hidden Details It is a lonely existence being a Soft Machine freak. I bought their third LP (curiously entitled “Third”) back around 1970, in high school, and lay down for a nap while listening to “Out-Bloody-Rageous”. And I woke up and understood them for the first time. In 1974, they did a quick tour of the U.S. East Coast after releasing their seventh album (curiously entitled “Seven”), an album that I had put on permanent play at the time, prompting rooming-house neighbors to inquire, “Who IS that?” I caught them live at the Main Point Café, in Bryn Mawr one cold night and was surprised to see a guitar on stage, an instrument notable for its absence in their recording output.

Press & radio release Bio information: Phil Miller Cuneiform Records is proud to announce the release of Digging In, by Phil Miller (Cuneiform Records Rune 34). Digging In is Phil Miller's third solo release. Phil Miller started composing & playing guitar in 1968. His first group was Delivery, with whom he cut a record in 1971. Also playing in Delivery were Steve Miller (later of Caravan), Roy Babbington (Soft Machine), & Pip Pyle (Gong). In late 1971, Phil helped to found Matching Mole with noted drummer & vocalist Robert Wyatt. They recorded 2 lps: Matching Mole & Little Red Record. After the break-up of Matching Mole, Phil joined forces with Dave Stewart, Richard Sinclair (Caravan), & Pip Pyle to form Hatfield & The North. Hatfield were exceedingly popular, & cut 2 successful lps for Virgin in the mid 70's; Hatfield & The North & The Rotter's Club. Hatfield & The North later evolved into National Health, with whom Phil recorded National Health, Of Queues & Cures, & D.S. Al Coda. Since the dissolution of National Health, Phil has been refining his playing & compositional abilities even further, cutting two discs [Cutting Both Ways (Cuneiform) and Split Seconds (Reckless)] that feature a mixture of his work with his current band In Cahoots & his more studio-oriented solo work. Digging In is the first release to solely feature Phil's MIDI/studio oriented work. In addition to Phil, also appearing are drummer Pip Pyle, keyboardist Peter Lemer (who has played with Mike Oldfield and In Cahoots), & bassist Fred Baker (of In Cahoots).
