The Cinema of Hal Hartley: Place, Cultural Identity and Indie Authorship Sebastian Christopher Manley Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of East Anglia, School of Film and Television Studies June 2011 This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. Abstract This study considers the films and professional practice of the filmmaker Hal Hartley. Since his earliest features, which in the early 1990s drew substantial praise in the American press, Hartley has been associated with American ‘independent’ cinema. As the overall visibility and commercial value of independent filmmaking have increased, however, Hartley’s own profile has decreased. The primary intent of this thesis is to outline the position occupied by Hartley at various levels and at various points throughout the 1990s and 2000s, within the context of independent cinema. I argue that it is at the closely related levels of place and cultural identity, as much as at the levels of form and genre more frequently discussed in accounts of Hartley and independent cinema, that Hartley’s films are marked to various degrees as distinctive. The films are often further marked as distinctive, I suggest, at the level of industrial position, another dimension of Hartley’s cinema that has received little attention in past studies. The first four chapters of this thesis focus on Hartley’s feature films, discussed in rough chronological order from The Unbelievable Truth to Fay Grim , the latter film representing the culmination of what I argue is an important shift in Hartley’s filmography: from narratives emphasising family and grounded communities to narratives emphasising global travel and social fragmentation.

Festival organisers Robin and Joe Bennett (pictured) had revealed a shortfall in the event’s finances days after this year’s Truck, at the end of July. On the 11th August Robin issued a statement confirming the worst: “Insufficient final ticket sales and revenues over the weekend have combined to force this outcome in what is a very difficult festival market. We would like to apologise to all those affected, including those who have not received their fees. On a personal note, we are devastated after such a well-received event, which was a success on many levels.” The sad news comes after Truck had enjoyed a complete redesign of its site, an expansion in capacity, and a move up to a three day event. How the news affects the Truck organisation’s other events, including WOOD Festival and Truck America is uncertain but it looks like it will spell the end to one of the Oxfordshire music scene’s best loved institutions, one that started out as a party for Robin’s birthday in 1998 and helped pioneer a whole new movement of small-scale local festivals, hailed as the Godfather of small festivals in The Guardian last year.

MSMI 11:1 Spring 17 https://doi.org/10.3828/msmi.2017.2 ‘Comparable to MTV – but Better’ The Impact of The Chart Show on British Music Video Culture, 1986–1998 JUSTIN SmiTH ‘Comparable to MTV – but Better’ The Chart Show was a weekly UK TV programme showcasing music videos from the Media Research Information Bureau (MRIB) Network Chart and a range of independent and specialist pop music charts. It began broadcasting on Friday evenings on Channel 4 in April 1986 and ran for three series until September 1988. Its production company, Video Visuals, subsequently found a new home for The Chart Show with Yorkshire Television on ITV, where it went out on Saturday mornings between January 1989 and August 1998. What made the show unique in the British broadcasting context was that it was the first presenter-less pop chart programme that showcased popular music exclusively in video form. Beginning at a time when MTV was still unavailable in the UK, The Chart Show was innovatory in consolidating music video as the lingua franca of the pop singles market. Drawing on archival sources from Channel 4, and the trade and popular music presses, this article shows how The Chart Show helped shape the form of music video, contributed to its commercial status, boosted singles sales, and drove industry demand and production schedules. It argues that an appreciation of music video is dependent upon the historical specificity of its broadcast context. Origins Writing about the ‘uneasy relationship’ between popular music and television, Simon Frith argues that it was only with the emergence of cable television in the 1980s that a music television service was developed with anything like the day-to-day significance of music radio.
