Allen Landcover change is an important global change process affecting social– ecological system(s) (SES) worldwide. Human activities may directly and indirectly drive landcover change, and human populations may be directly and indirectly affected by it. Although uncertainties exist about the future of landcover change, uncertainties can be engaged strategically in the context of SESs thinking. One such means of strategic engagement involves evaluating and comparing case studies of regional human-driven landcover change—past, present, and potential future—in order to obtain a more holistic and place-based understanding of its social–ecological trajectories, causes, and consequences. Improved understanding of these aspects of regional landcover change could inform decisions and actions that increase the resilience of SESs to landcover change and related global change processes. In this dissertation, I assess trajectories, causes, and consequences of past, present, and potential future landcover change in landscapes of Nebraska, U.S.A. in the context of SESs thinking. In these case studies, a variety of methodological approaches—notably historical literature review, statistical modeling, machine learning, graph theory, and cellular automata—are utilized to improve understanding of past, present, and potential future human-driven landcover change in Nebraska landscapes, the direct and indirect relationships between landcover change and people, and the social–ecological tradeoffs associated with alternative landcover change trajectories. Individually, the findings of the chapters of this dissertation are useful for increasing understanding of landscape- and SES-specific landcover change effects and for informing current and future landscape management. In such SES-specific contexts, emphasis on the short- and long-term effects of landcover change for human populations and ecosystems, as well as increasing awareness of their interdependencies, could assist decision-making through the consideration of the social–ecological tradeoffs associated with alternative landcover-based decisions and actions. In a broader sense, the utility of this dissertation’s findings lies in the promotion and illustration of the engagement of social–ecological challenges like landcover change—and uncertainties about them— through the lens of SESs thinking. iv DEDICATION To Annika again and now Samara, too. v ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS There are a number of individuals and organizations that deserve thanks for their investment and assistance in the development of this dissertation, and in me. Between 2000 and 2010, the population of Douglas County—home of Omaha—increased 11.5 percent, while neighboring Sarpy County grew 29.6 percent. Nebraska’s population is becoming more racially and ethnically diverse. The most significant growth has occurred in the Latino population, which is now the state’s largest minority group. From 2000 to 2010, the state’s Latino population increased from 5.5 percent to 9.2 percent, growing at a rate of slightly more than 77 percent. The black population also grew from 3.9 percent to 4.4 percent during that time. While Nebraska’s median age increased from 35.3 in 2000, to 36.2 in 2010 — the number of Nebraskans age 65 and older decreased slightly during the same time period, from 13.6 percent in 2000, to 13.5 percent in 2010. RECREATION AND PLACES OF INTEREST31 National Areas32 Nebraska has two national forest areas with hand-planted trees: the Bessey Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forest in Blaine and Thomas counties, and the Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest in Cherry County. The Pine Ridge Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forest in Dawes and Sioux counties contains native ponderosa pine trees. The U.S. Forest Service also administers the Oglala National Grassland in northwest Nebraska. Within it is Toadstool Geologic Park, a moonscape of eroded badlands containing fossil trackways that are 30 million years old. The Hudson-Meng Bison Bonebed, an archaeological site containing the remains of more than 600 pre- historic bison, also is located within the grassland.

Chimney Rock National Historic Site, a 500-foot spire carved by the elements, is near Bayard. It also served as a landmark for Oregon Trail travelers. The Niobrara National Scenic River is a popular canoeing river. The Missouri/Niobrara/ Verdigre Creek National Recreational Rivers and the Missouri National Recreational River offer land and water recreation and views of the waterways similar to those the Lewis and Clark expedition saw as they crossed the Great Plains. More than just a fly-over state, Nebraska is rich history. The Pony Express, the Oregon and Mormon Trails, the Lewis and Clark expedition and home to many Native American tribes. It is not all amber waves of grain in the 37th largest state. Discover the Sandhills in north-central Nebraska and the Pine Ridge regions in the western part of our state. Climb the bluffs along the Missouri River and view the variegated fall colors. Ride through the country’s only man-made forest or you can literally follow the tracks of the covered wagons pass- ing though our state. Get off the interstate and into the saddle to see what Nebraska is really made of! This booklet has been years in the making. While it may seem like an easy project capturing all the trails in Nebraska, the Nebraska Horse Trails Committee wanted to provide more than just the name and location. Every time one of us would delve into the project, it became apparent that more research was necessary and perhaps we should ride the trails first and then report on them! We all agreed riding was much more fun.
