At the moment we are at the preliminary stage and we have been given an initial grant for us and our firm of chartered surveyors to do the foundational work, necessary when drawing up specifications to send to potential contractors who can submit estimates and tenders based on the specification. There is much work to be done to slopes of the roof and tower, to the walls of the building and to the floor.

  • Horse Around 29
Free to Members No. 29 Winter 2010/11 Straight from the horse’s mouth In This Issue Hello Everyone The Kernow Trailblazers A thousand apologies to you all, particularly those of you waiting for the new horse hike programme, for not sending out a newsletter until Horse Hike Reports now. A combination of having some all important time out from Bridleway Dedication Nancledra bridleway work, taking a bit of holiday away, family commitments and Carnyorth Common Update difficulties of an ageing Mum has taken their toll on our time. We Devon Trails hope you all had a good Summer. Although an age ago, I will hoof off with commenting that we had an and much more … excellent attendance at the AGM where we had an interesting presentation by Lindsay Setchell of Hoofing Marvellous on Barefoot riding. Although going barefoot is not for everyone she gave an insight into the possibilities and the appropriateness of youngstock starting out and continuing with barefoot. She also covered nutrition and passed around lots of little packages of various types of horse feeds from herbages to grains. Anyone who has an idea for a speaker for the next AGM or knows of someone who would like to come and give us a talk – horse related of course – please let me know. The Madron horse hike took place on a truly gloriously sunny and windless day in April. Anne took us on a lovely easy ride. The St Just charity horseride in aid of The Mermaid Centre also enjoyed equally good weather in May. The theme was continued in a big way with “The Kernow Trailblazers”who completed an epic ride of the Kernow Horse Trail from the Devon border to Lands End in June.

  • Could Helston Have Historically Been a Port Settlement?
CAMBORNE SCHOOL OF MINES Could Helston have historically been a port settlement? : An analysis of available evidence and LiDAR remote sensing data cross referenced with a survey of the lower Cober/Loe valley Peter Nicholls 05/09/2013 Submitted by Peter Nicholls to the University of Exeter – Camborne School of Mines as a dissertation towards the degree of Master of Science by advanced study in Surveying, Land Environmental Management, September 2013 I certify that all material in this dissertation which is not my own work has been identified and that no material is included for which a degree has previously been conferred on me. Abstract The aim of this dissertation was to investigate the factual basis of the commonly held belief that Helston was historically a port town with access to the sea. This aim was successfully achieved through rigorous primary data collection cross referenced with available remote sensing information, as well as interpretation of large amounts of secondary evidence. Secondary evidence involved consulting with private contractors who had undertaken work within the area of interest, as well as publically available historical and geological information. Primary data collection was undertaken in the summer of 2013 using topographical surveying apparatus, including both optical and GNSS equipment made available through Camborne School of Mines. Remote sensing LiDAR (5m resolution, carried out in 2006) data was sourced from the Landmap Service, a JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee) funded project between Mimas (centre of excellence based at Manchester University) and the University College London Dept. of Geomatic Engineering. Results show that the LiDAR elevation data for the area matches that of independent primary data gathered, and as such can be deemed reliable and analysed further.

  • Advisory Visit River Cober, Cornwall
Advisory Visit River Cober, Cornwall Advisory Visit by Bruno Vincent [email protected] & Nick Lawrence [email protected] Key Findings • The outfall through the Loe Bar should be considered a total blocker to upstream migration of fish. Conveyance of water from the Loe Pool is essential for the safety of the town of Helston and improvements to fish passage are unlikely to come at the expense of flood protection. • The minor streams that enter the lake appear less altered than the main Cober and offer good spawning potential. • The lake is clearly proving supportive for the coarse fish populations with prime spawning habitat. Improving the salmonid habitat in the river above should be considered a priority to allow brown trout to compete successfully. • The lower section of the Cober has the appearance of quality trout habitat; however, the reduced flow as it transitions into the lake limits its potential. Such benign neglect should be applied to the entire reach in the form of light touch management. • The upper 500m of the Lower Cober inspected is canalised and overly managed. Remeandering and introducing woody material to the channel should be considered to reconnect the lake and the upper Cober with better salmonid habitat and spawning potential. • Any increased flood risk that remeandering is thought to bring could be offset by better connecting the river to the flood plain. • Gravel introduction to form artificial riffles may be needed to renaturalise the reach and augment spawning options. 2 Table of Contents Key Findings ................................................................................... 2 Introduction .................................................................................... 4 Catchment / Fishery Overview ........................................................... 7 Habitat Assessment ......................................................................... 7 Loe Bar Outfall .............................................................................
