As one of the lead ing educational men of the area, he is largely- responsible for the high standards of education exhibited at Mines, and it has been through his efforts that many of the students of Mines have been able to remain in school, to train for their place in -war time industries, or for technical posts in the armed services. He has been improving the curriculum at School of Mines, and -with an eye to the future. President Coolbaugh endeavors to prepare Mines for the needs of the post--war -world, when technically trained men, especially en gineers, will be needed as they have never been. MELVIN F. DEAN MORGAN When seniors graduate and look back upon their years at Mines, one of their most valued memories is of their acquaintance with Dean Jesse R. Morgan. Throughout their career at Mines, students for the last 24 years have been indebted to the Dean. Whether it be for a reinstatement for ex cessive absences, an excuse for an absence, or a personal difficulty. Dean Morgan is always ready to lend willing assistance to his students. Though small in stature. Dean Morgan makes up for this with his integrity, foresight and good judgment. He has a vital interest in all school activities. All Miners know that they can go to the Dean with their troubles, and they realize the fact that he understands their situation and will assist them in every way possible. As a senior editor at ESPN: The Magazine he was responsible for sport-specific (boxing, MMA and combat sports) content as well as sports business coverage across multiple sports. From 2008 through 2010, he was editor of Catalyst Ohio , an investigative education magazine. He guided Catalyst to awards including the Society of Professional Journalists and the Association for Women in Communications’ Clarion Award. Earlier in his career he worked as a business reporter for The Cincinnati Enquirer , The Boston Globe , and The Baltimore Business Journal . He has provided on-air commentary for CNN, National Public Radio, PBS’ NewsHour and The Nightly Business Report. He is a graduate of Coppin State University. Kelley L. Carter Kelley L. Carter is a senior entertainment editor for BuzzFeed. She previously served as the Entertainment Editor at EBONY Magazine. Earlier in her career she was a Celebrity Reporter for USA Today , an Entertainment Reporter for The Chicago Tribune , a Music Critic and Columnist for The Detroit Free Press . As a freelance journalist Carter contributed to ESPN, MTV News, as well as Essence , JET , Uptown , Heart & Soul , Complex , and Vibe Magazines. She has appeared as a commentator on E!, HLN, CNN, Fox News, TV One, and The TV Guide Channel. While at The Free Press Carter won a national Emmy for an online documentary “40 Years of Respect,” which chronicled Aretha Franklin’s career from the time she topped the charts with her song, “Respect.” A longtime member of NABJ Carter serves as Chair of the Association’s Arts and Entertainment Task Force.
