A cap on pay increases led to various strikes by trade unions during the so-called “Winter of Discontent” in 1978. Union strikes left garbage in the streets, unburied dead, and caused food and power shortages. Many youth were out of work and angry. It was against this social context that Punk Rock was born. • The Clash and Mass Media Messages from the Only Band That Matters
THE CLASH AND MASS MEDIA MESSAGES FROM THE ONLY BAND THAT MATTERS Sean Xavier Ahern A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2012 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Kristen Rudisill © 2012 Sean Xavier Ahern All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This thesis analyzes the music of the British punk rock band The Clash through the use of media imagery in popular music in an effort to inform listeners of contemporary news items. I propose to look at the punk rock band The Clash not solely as a first wave English punk rock band but rather as a “news-giving” group as presented during their interview on the Tom Snyder show in 1981. I argue that the band’s use of communication metaphors and imagery in their songs and album art helped to communicate with their audience in a way that their contemporaries were unable to. Broken down into four chapters, I look at each of the major releases by the band in chronological order as they progressed from a London punk band to a globally known popular rock act. Viewing The Clash as a “news giving” punk rock band that inundated their lyrics, music videos and live performances with communication images, The Clash used their position as a popular act to inform their audience, asking them to question their surroundings and “know your rights.” iv For Pat and Zach Ahern Go Easy, Step Lightly, Stay Free. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This thesis would not have been possible without the help of many, many people.

BURTON Dissertation Director: Andrew Kirkman The decade of the 2000s has witnessed the rise of the iPod, a well-marketed mp3 player whose massive storage capacity and ever-shrinking size has extended the boundaries of personal music players to previously unthinkable proportions. And as digital music has expanded its own boundaries, it has spilled over several others, allowing us the opportunity to reconsider many of our musical assumptions. Specifically, I examine the iPod in relation to production and marketing techniques, human-technological hybridity, music hermeneutics, genre distinctions, male music collecting stereotypes, and the urban experience in New York City. The major assumption from which this work proceeds is that the iPod’s relationship to culture is dynamic; the iPod doesn’t wholly shape culture, nor is it wholly shaped

  • THE MICK 57.Pmd
THE MICK 555777 The Class Of 2011 ...people like to bemoan the state of music, reminding any affable furniture around them that things were much better when they were young. (This only confuses furniture, who have no concept of age.) The truth is that everything changes and evolves. Everything can be of interest, and a year that saw as many great records as the ones decorating this cover qualifies as a vintage experience. There are plenty more exciting concoctions inside, so if you missed any of these noirish beauties during 2011 prepare yourself for an illuminating journey. EDITORIAL VOMIT will be short and to the point here. It’s been three steps forward, eighty five enormous steps back in the lfie of Mercer during the past two and a bit years, for reasons too laborious to go into. While I would, ideally, have liked to have completed this round-up of last year’s great artistic works during January I haven’t. It’s as simple as that. I hope there are many records here you have yet to encounter and that this little collection may prove highly useful. There’s certainly some real delights here because last year saw variety and genuine beauty, as well as bewildering surprises. I go now. MY TOP THIRTY ALBUMS OF 2011 1. FEAR INCORPORATED Sawney’s Cave (Plastic Frog) 2. MARK SINNIS The Undertaker In My Rearview Mirror (9th Recordings) 3. THE GHOST EFFECT TGE (Breakdown Records) 4. • What If Keith Levene Never Left the Clash?: Punk and the Politics of Novelty
Dale, Pete (2019) What if Keith Levene never left the Clash?: Punk and the Politics of Novelty. In: Working for the Clampdown The Clash, the Dawn of Neoliberalism and the Political Promise of Punk. Manchester University Press. ISBN 1526114216 Downloaded from: https://e-space.mmu.ac.uk/623201/ Version: Accepted Version Publisher: Manchester University Press Please cite the published version https://e-space.mmu.ac.uk What if Keith Levene had never left the Clash?: Punk and the Politics of Novelty The purpose of this chapter is partly to query the ‘year zero’ mythology of 1977 era punk, partly to question the idea that a discrete ‘post-punk’ music can be understood separately from ‘original’ punk and partly to explore more general questions around music, novelty and tradition. The latter concern is something I have been exploring in theoretical work for some years now. The Clash are here used largely as a case study with which to test certain theories I have been developing. Those theories should become clear as the chapter progresses (see the end of this introduction for some key theoretical questions, for example). In the conclusion, I focus closely on the question which has been at the heart of my work for many years: will radical innovation produce radical politics or can radical/leftist politics be better served by artistic products which are more ‘traditional’ (i.e. less ostentatiously novel) in character? Punk is a long tradition within which ‘the first wave’ represents only one episode. Indeed, 1970s UK punk was not even the first music to be described as ‘punk rock’: Dave Marsh used these two words in 1971 to describe ? and the Mysterians, the US ‘garage’ group, in the US magazine Creem.1 It is well known that the word ‘punk’ was circulating in a range of music-related contexts prior to its usage in the UK from 1976 onwards, such as the magazine/fanzine published by Legs McNeil and John Holmstrom between 1975 and 1979.
