A: Start date is negotiable (and determined by scope) but we would prefer to have an agreement in place by April especially with the anticipated opening of the Pavilion in late August/early September. The history of ice harvesting, the ice industry, refrigeration, and making ice cream Kathi Elkins 7-29-19 OLLI: Summer 2019 Ice Storage and Ice Houses: 1780 BC --- ice house in northern Mesopotamian 1100 BC --- evidence of ice pits in China By 400 BC --- Persian engineers had mastered techniques of constructing yakhchāl to store ice harvested from nearby mountains. 300 BC --- Alexander the Great (snow pits to hold snow and ice) 200s AD --- Romans (snow shops) Cold springs, root cellars Ice Houses: Yakhchāl (this one at Yazd, Iran) is a Persian ice pit or a type of evaporative cooler. Above ground, the structure had a domed shape, but had a subterranean storage space. It was often used to store ice and food. The subterranean space coupled with the thick heat-resistant construction material insulated the storage space all year. Ice Houses: Ice houses in England/UK. Ice Houses: Croome's thatched ice house, Worcestershire, UK Ice Houses: Botany Bay Icehouse, Edisto Island, SC Ice Houses: Ice house designs usually began as an underground egg-shaped cellar. This ice house, dating from 1780s and designed by architect John Nash, was discovered in 2018 buried under London streets. Every year it’s re-designed and built from scratch. Last year it celebrated its 10th anniversary. This year, the hotel is being built just 10 minutes north of downtown Quebec City. (The hotel used to be about 30 minutes away.) At its original location, more than 65,000 people toured the hotel every winter, with 4,000 guests staying overnight annually. Besides guest rooms, the hotel last year included a disco, gallery and exhibition area, indoor ice slide, a bar big enough for 400 and a chapel that hosts dozens of weddings. You can visit just for a tour or drink, as well. Shuttles run from downtown Quebec to the hotel.   • Programme Glacier Hike at the Jungfraujoch
    Welcome to the Swiss Mountaineering School grindelwaldSPORTS. Glacier Hike at the Jungfraujoch The programme: After an interesting train ride, you are going to meet your guide on the Jungfraujoch Coffee bar. Your guide now leads you through the whole Jungfraujoch, including Ice Palace, Alpine Sensation, the Plateau etc. We resort to the exit on the Aletsch Glacier: Wow, you’re now looking at almost every famous 4000m summit of the Bernese Alps! After one hour of hiking we arrive at the Mönchsjochhut. From here on we continue our hike across the Glacier of Ewig Schneefeld (ever- lasting snowfield) and after another hour we arrive at the lower Mönchsjoch. The view of Eiger, Schreckhorn and the wilds Eismeer Glacier (Sea of Ice) is breath-taking. Time for a little break and a snack we hike back to the Mönchsjochhut, which we hit after 1.5h. Here we eat some deli- cious home-made cake and then hike back to the Jungfraujoch, where we start our journey back home. We arrive at the valley early noon. What you need to know… Meeting point: 09.45 am at the coffee bar on the Jungfraujoch. Requirements: Day 1 400m elevation gain 400m elevation loss 6 kilometres Walking time: around 4-5 hours Technical difficulty: easy Equipment: See equipment list in the appendix. Required technical equipment: In our Outdoorshop you can find technical equipment, Clothes, Shoes and Backpacks to buy. We also rent technical equipment. Decision: 1-2 days before the tour, we check different weather forecasts and the con- ditions to decide whether we can start the tour.
