APPENDIX A

ABOUT CANOSSAVILLE CHILDREN’S HOME

Canossaville was first established as an orphanage in 1941 with the aim of providing care and attention to male and female orphans. In later years, it became a home for girls from single-parent families and troubled homes.

The mission of the Canossian Sisters is to reach out to the poorest and least endowed within our society. Care and services are extended to children who lack adequate parental support.

Programmes managed by Canossaville include:

D Residential Services The home can accommodate up to 30 residents, which is normally open to girls only. Residents are taught basic self-help and housekeeping skills to prepare them for re- integration with the family or independent living

D Before and After School Care Services (BASC) Applicable to children from single-parent low income families, residents from the Children’s Home and pupils from schools in the vicinity. Lunch is provided for children before and after school. The rest of the time is spent on completing school work under the supervision of qualified staff.

D Learning Support and Homework Supervision Main activity of the children in the daytime is to complete the homework set by their school teachers and to work towards progressively improved work. Children are encouraged to be independent learners, and coached to develop habits of a healthy work ethic.

D Total Learning for Children (TLC) This is a support service for children who are facing specific or general learning difficulties in school and are unable to progress without individualized help. Pre- schoolers and early school-aged children are also helped to develop a love for reading and familiarity with the printed word through half-hourly sessions of shared reading with a reading buddy.

Canossaville is affiliated to the Catholic Welfare Services and the National Council of Social Service. It was registered as a Charity under the Charities Act in June 1987. From 1997, it is authorized to receive tax-exempt donations as a member of the NCSS Central Fund.
