For immediate release Masterpieces of German Expressionism at Villa Grisebach’s Spring Auctions Special Auction of Prints From The Studio of Max Beckmann Several masterpieces of German Expressionism by the important Brücke artists will be offered at Villa Grisebach’s spring auctions in Berlin from May 29 until June 1. The total pre-sale estimate is more than 17 million euros. Emil Nolde’s large “Landschaft (mit Regenwolke)” is estimated at 1 to 1.5 million euros, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff’s radiant “Landschaft mit Leuchtturm und Windmühle” of 1920 at € 800,000/1,200,000 and Otto Mueller’s coquettish portrait of his lover, titled “Mädchen mit grünem Schal,” at € 700,000/1,000,000. Max Liebermann and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner take a look at Berlin in the 1920s in very different ways: Liebermann’s large Wannseegarten in summery bloom stands alongside Kirchner’s urban view of “Lützowufer am Morgen.” Both paintings have the same estimate (€ 500,000/700,000). Paintings and works on paper by Max Pechstein, Christian Rohlfs, Wassily Kandinsky, Paula Modersohn-Becker and others round out the sale’s selection of modern art. Singular is a collection of more than eighty prints by Max Beckmann from the estate of his wife, Quappi. The works – most are inscribed with the artist’s dedication give an overview of Beckmann’s graphic oeuvre and will be presented in a special auction accompanied by a separate catalog (“From The Artist’s Studio – Prints for Quappi”). The post-war and contemporary art selection has a particularly international appeal in Villa Grisebach’s spring auctions. Aside from strong works by E.W. Nay (“Orakel,” 1964, € 200,000/300,000) and Emil Schumacher (“Adon,” 1981, € 150,000/200,000) the early grid painting by Otto Piene from the year of the founding of group ZERO stands out (Untitled, 1958/62, € 50,000/70,000). American art of the 1950s and 1960s is represented prominently this season. Works like Ad Reinhardt’s painting “Iris Mystique” from his famous series of “Black Paintings” (€ 250,000/350,000) as well as Robert Rauschenberg’s collage “Paragraph III,” 1966, (€ 150,000/200,000) rarely feature in German auctions. Aside from two works by Anselm Kiefer – “Leonardo Pisano” and “Die Ungeborenen” (€ 100,000/150,000 resp. 90,000/120,000) – Fernando Botero is represented again by a painting: “Circus Musicans” (2008) is expected to achieve € 300,000/ 400,000. The stars of German contemporary art since 1990 round out the offering: Neo Rauch’s large “Roter Junge” (1995, € 100,000/150,000) and Stephan Balkenhol’s two-part “Doppelter Mann in Jeans” (2003, € 60,000/80,000). The focus of the 19th century art auction again lies in German Romanticism. Two works lead the auction’s estimate range: an Italian place of idyllic longing for € 70,000/90,000 by Franz Ludwig Catel from Heidelberg and a rare Tivoli painting by Ernst Fries (€ 40,000/60,000). The highlight of the second auction “ORANGERIE. Selected Objects” is a Renaissance bench executed by the famous workshop da Maianos in Florence in 1480/90. The bench was in the Renaissance collection assembled by Wilhelm von Bode crica 1900 for the Berlin patron, Eduard Simon (€ 50,000/70,000). The auction spans from a Chinese celadon plate from the 10th century Song Dynasty (€ 10,000/15,000), the coat of arms of the first King of Prussia of 1705 (€ 20,000/ 25,000) to an easel on which Lovis Corinth painted (€ 2,000/3,000). The preview of all works from this season’s auctions will be held from May 24 until 28 in Berlin. From late April a selection of works will be on a preview tour to Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Zurich, Hamburg and Munich. Dates and all eight auction catalogs are available at www.villa-grisebach.com.
