Thanks to a bountiful environment, the Valhallan society mirrors the core values and behaviors of colonial America. And Valhalla is growing restless under the controlling long arm of the Datum government.Soon Joshua, now a married man, is summoned by Lobsang to deal with a building crisis that threatens to plunge the Long Earth into a war unlike any humankind has waged before. The book has the dubious honor of being the second book I have ever stopped reading and not resumed. As others have pointed out, The Long Earth was a far better novel, had good tension and built a great world.

  • A Clockwork War: Rhetorics of Time in a Time of Terror Roger Stahl
Quarterly Journal of Speech Vol. 94, No. 1, February 2008, pp. 73Á99 A Clockwork War: Rhetorics of Time in a Time of Terror Roger Stahl Expressions of time have increasingly infused the rhetorical experience of post-industrial war, especially since 9/11. This essay demonstrates how these ‘‘signs of time’’ operate as one of three tropes: deadline/countdown, infinite/infinitesimal war, and the ticking clock. The persistence of such signs of time in public discourse can be seen as an expression of what Paul Virilio has called the ‘‘chronopolis,’’ a political universe textured by real-time communication technologies. The chronopolitical will exhibits certain autocratic traits at odds with democratic ideals, primarily the refashioning of citizen identity into that of the ‘‘contemporary.’’ The analysis here charts the autocratic rhetoric of the chronopolis as a critical democratic project. Keywords: Time; Television; War on Terror; Militarism; Chronopolitics A battle is brewing over the politics of time.1 Post-industrial war seems to be characterized by a certain obsession with the clock. We might mark the birth of this obsession on January 16, 1991, when George H.W. Bush initiated what William J. Small calls ‘‘a rarity, a war by appointment.’’2 Here, the U.S. so utterly dominated the field of conflict that the ability to schedule the war accompanied the ability to construct the war as a public relations event*that is, assuming that the annihilation of one army by another three hundred times its size can rightly be called a ‘‘war.’’3 The naming of this war by appointment offers us a vivid starting point.

  • Teachings of the Book of Mormon
TEACHINGS OF THE BOOK OF MORMON HUGH NIBLEY Semester 2, Lecture 55 Alma 32–35 Mission to the Zoramites The Book of Mormon doesn’t dabble around, as historical romances and things like that do. It’s really to the “nitty gritty.” In this chapter 34, Alma is speaking to the other Zoramites. Alma has two missions, you’ll notice, with this people. The first one was a complete failure with the Zoramites proper. There are the excluded ones that are not included in this. They are another society entirely. They’re not even allowed to go to these temples. You remember, he talks about the temples, their riches, their homes, and all this sort of thing. But this is where the other society doesn’t even come near; they are shut out of town after dark. It’s expressed here a little further on in Alma 35:3 where he says, “And it came to pass that after the more popular part of the Zoramites had consulted together concerning the words which had been preached unto them, they were angry because . it did destroy their craft.” The more popular parts wouldn’t accept it at all. Their craft, of course, was priestcraft. But these [people] are the less popular parts. In fact, they don’t even have citizen’s rights or anything else, as we soon find out. They met on the hill Onidah and “began to have great success among the poor class of people; for behold, they were cast out of the synagogues because of the coarseness of their apparel.
