The book has the dubious honor of being the second book I have ever stopped reading and not resumed.As others have pointed out, The Long Earth was a far better novel, had good tension and built a great world. In this novel, all that tension is tossed out the window. Now, Im not sure if they were trying to do a long slow build when they found out that they got greenlit to do a 5-part series, but theres nothing that makes any of that tension compelling. The characters are flat, good guys and bad guys. The conflict one-sided.I expect characters to be somewhat archetypal in the first showing in the first novel of a series; thats understandable. In The Long Earth, its the first place we meet Joshua. He has to be a little bit of an archetype to make us root for him. And then he begins to grow. But nope, lets chuck all that out the window, return him to a reluctant pioneer/leader/small-government/environmentalist with zero nuance in The Long War. Joshua no-like aegis, aegis bad, Lobsang no-trustworthy. And honestly? The ideas Joshua is supposed to believe in I am sympathetic towards, yet they were still tedious.Truth be told, this is exactly like what happens when Baxter partners with any other author. All the Clarke-Baxter novels suffered the same way. And here, there is none of the verve that comes with Pratchett. There was some of Sir Pratchett in The Long Earth, but theres nary a trace here beyond the germ of the idea. And I wasnt expecting Discworld, but I did expect some co-author chemistry like there was with Good Omens.Save your money, buy a Discworld novel or Good Omens or something like that. An abridged version is distributed in braille. This periodical lists digital talking books and magazines available through a network of cooperating libraries and carries news of developments and activities in services to people who are blind, visually impaired, or cannot read standard print material because of an organic physical disability. The annotated list in this issue is limited to titles recently added to the national collection, which contains thousands of fiction and nonfiction titles, including bestsellers, classics, biographies, romance novels, mysteries, and how-to guides. Some books in Spanish are also available.
