In three of the past five UEFA European Under-21 Championships, the eventual winners lost their opening game – Netherlands in 2006, Italy in 2004 and Czech Republic in 2002. • In Ukraine and England's only previous U21 encounter a Jermaine Pennant-inspired Young Lions won 3-1 in a friendly in Middlesbrough on 17 August 2004. This will be the countries' first competitive encounter at this level. • The countries have met four times in the U19s, Ukraine recording a 2-0 win in the 2009 European Championship final in Donetsk after three earlier games had ended in draws. • The teams had already met in the group stage of the 2009 final tournament, Kyrylo Petrov scoring twice for Ukraine and England's goals coming from Henri Lansbury and Danny Gosling in a 2-2 draw. • Denys Garmash and Dmytro Korkishko struck the goals in the final at the RSC Olimpiyskiy Stadium on 2 August 2009. The teams were: England: Steele, Trippier, Mattock, Gosling, Walker, Welbeck (Ranger 64), Drinkwater (Tutte 55), Delfouneso, Lansbury, Bennett, Briggs (Hoyte 56). Ukraine: Levchenko, Kushnirov, Partsvania, Kryvtsov, Petrov (Yeremenko 90+6), Garmash, Shakhov, Rybalka, Kaverin (Shevchuk 80), Korkishko, Chaikovsky. • The nations have met four times at senior international level, England recording three victories at home before losing 1-0 in Dnipropetrovsk in the most recent encounter, a FIFA World Cup qualifier on 10 October 2009. • Goalkeeper Robert Green's early dismissal helped Ukraine's cause. Serhiy Nazarenko scored the only goal with current U21 international Andriy Yarmolenko coming on as a substitute for Ukraine. • England won 2-0 against Ukraine in the sides' only competitive U17 meeting, at the 2004 European Championship. Shane Paul and Nathan Doyle hit the goals. • England coach Stuart Pearce scored his only goal in UEFA club competition in his one match against Ukrainian opponents, helping Newcastle United FC beat FC Dynamo Kyiv 2-0 in the 1997/98 UEFA Champions League group stage. • English and Ukrainian sides have met in 32 UEFA club competition games. The English hold the upper hand with a record of W16 D9 L7. Ukraine news • Substitute Maxym Biliy's 87th-minute strike was not enough to salvage a point for Ukraine, who lost their opening game to the Czech Republic in Viborg after two Bořek Dočkal goals earlier in the second half. • Captain Taras Stepanenko was replaced in the 54th minute after suffering a recurrence of an adductor muscle injury in his thigh. A subsequent scan on Monday ruled him out for the rest of the tournament. • Forward Roman Zozulya was booked against the Czechs, and will serve a one-match ban if he is shown another yellow card against England. • Following Stepanenko's withdrawal, Yaroslav Rakitskiy assumed the armband and his FC Shakhtar Donetsk club-mate's position as midfield anchorman. • Coach Pavlo Yakovenko had lost first-choice left-back Yevhen Selin to a high temperature on the day of the Czech Republic game. • Ukraine's players saw the pitch at the Viborg Stadion for the first time 40 minutes before kick-off after electing not to make the two-hour round trip from their base to train there on the eve of the game. • Football Federation of Ukraine (FFU) president Grigoriy Surkis came into the dressing room after the match to offer his support and told the players to keep their chin up. Last updated 14/06/11 1:26:22CET 3 Match background Ukraine v England Wednesday 15 June 2011 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time) MATCH PRESS KIT Herning Stadion, Herning • Yakovenko's squad had landed in Denmark on Friday. Two days before – as is tradition under Yakovenko – the squad visited the famous Christian Orthodox monastery in the capital, Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, where they received a blessing from a monk. England news • Danny Welbeck struck with two minutes remaining to earn a draw against Spain in Herning. England had trailed for most of the match after Ander Herrera's 14th-minute opener. • Welbeck was booked in the opening game, meaning he will miss his country's third group match against the Czech Republic if he is shown another yellow card on Wednesday. • Centre-back Phil Jones completed his move from Blackburn Rovers FC to Manchester United FC on Monday, signing a five-year contract in a deal thought to be worth up to €19m. • Table tennis has proved to be one of the most popular activities among the England players in their down time at their Brejning base. • England had flown into Billund airport on Wednesday and had their first practice session at FC Fredericia's ground – the squad's training base for the tournament. • Jordan Henderson joined up with the squad late having stayed in England to complete his transfer to Liverpool FC. Jones' talks over his move to Manchester United also delayed his arrival. • FC Shakhtar Annual Report Season 2009|10
www.shakhtar.com FC Shakhtar Annual Report season 2009|10 The season 2009/2010 turned out to be interesting and eventful. I think the fans will remember it for many years to come. WE HAVE CONSTRUCTED DONBASS ARENA – THE STADIUM IS OF A HIGH EUROPEAN STANDARD. IT MEETS THE AIMS AND AMBITIONS OF OUR CLUB. Donbass Arena was constructed for Shakhtar to play there and for the spectators to eagerly come and support their team. I think we managed to achieve this. Before the opening of Donbass Arena I had supposed that 30–35 thousand spectators were a real number for an ordinary game of the Ukrainian Championship. The first year of the stadium’s operation proved it. Shakhtar won the gold medals of 2009/2010 Ukrainian Championship. It is the fifth champion’s title of our team. This time Shakhtar starts the most prestigious European club tournament from the group stage. The Club’s management and fans are looking forward to the successful performance of our team. I’d also like to say that we are very grateful to the head coach, Mircea Lucescu, for the team he’s created. Over the last 6 years, we’ve won 4 championship titles, the UEFA Cup, and we are showing spectacular football of high European standard. Today we all believe in our team and this means for We BELIEVE in our team us a lot more than just words. with our whole HEARTS We believe in our team with our whole hearts and know, whoever our team plays against, we may expect victory.

Wisla Kraków v Blackburn Rovers FC MATCH PRESS KIT Wisly, Krakow Thursday, 19 October 2006 - 16:45 local time Group E Wisła Kraków will be hoping to make their European experience count as English side Blackburn Rovers FC head to Poland for the first match of their UEFA Cup Group E campaign. • The two teams have never met before in European competition. • Wisła boast a wealth of experience having made 74 appearances in European competition, winning 34, drawing 16 and losing 24. • However, they are yet to tackle English opposition in any of those matches and will be eager to make a positive start against Blackburn. • The Lancashire team have not enjoyed many happy times in European competition since making their first appearance in the 1994/95 UEFA Cup, going down to a 3-2 aggregate defeat by Trelleborgs IF of Sweden. • Of their 18 European games to date, Blackburn have won just two, drawing seven and losing nine. They beat Rosenborg BK 4-1 in the final game of their only UEFA Champions League group stage campaign in 1995/96, while a 2-0 win against FC Salzburg earned them the 4-2 aggregate win that put them through to this season's UEFA Cup group stage. • Blackburn secured their only previous success in a European tie on away goals against PFC CSKA Sofia in the 2002/03 UEFA Cup. • The Ewood Park side have met Polish opponents twice, taking on Wisła's arch-rivals Legia Warszawa twice in their ill-fated 1995/96 UEFA Champions League campaign. Polish international Jerzy Podbrozny scored the only goal in Warsaw in a 1-0 win for Legia before the sides drew 0-0 in the rematch in Blackburn.

  • The Ukrainian Weekly, 2016
No. 3 THE UKRAINIAN WEEKLY SUNDAY, JANUARY 17, 2016 5 2015: THE YEAR IN REVIEW As war in east continues, Ukraine moves Westward ocket attacks in the east marked the beginning of 2015 for Ukraine. Twelve civilians were killed and R11 were wounded by a missile fired by Russian- backed militants that hit a bus in the town of Volnovakha, 35 kilometers southwest of Donetsk, on January 13. President Petro Poroshenko stated: “This is a disaster and a tragedy for Ukraine.
