For the last three months, I’ve been able to read and research, write and reflect, and meet a variety of scholars, staff and friends, with the feeling that how one’s life intersects with so many other lives: that, I think, is one’s real autobiography . Happy Valley , Patrick White’s first published novel in 1939, has that as a theme and its epigraph is from Mahatma Gandhi. But more on these men later. In March this year Jyoti and I returned from Fiji after six eventful years. We’d gone there in February 2006, from the ANU and the University of Canberra, to help establish the first University of Fiji. Of course, there was USP, established in 1968, which I joined as one of the first local lecturers in 1969 and resigned to take up a ministry in the Bavadra cabinet in 1987: I resigned on Monday; the Colonel staged his coup on Thursday. -

Abstract: The research paper ―Fictional narratives of Patrick White‖ with special reference to The Vivisector contains a brief description of fictional and factual narratives, an introduction and analysis of some major works done by Patrick White and on the basis of that analysis his major themes were also discussed. His life and experiences and the major themes of his writings is briefly presented. The writing style, characters, plot and settings are some essential tools for every writer that is why it becomes mandatory to be discussed with reference to his major works. Special reference is given to his eighth novel The Vivisector (1970) because of many reasons and one of those reason is the protagonist of this novel ‗Hurtle Duffield‘ who is a painter but not an ordinary painter but a painter with an exceptional ability to look into the reality of a person. This character presents the conception of an artist, also he was a megalomaniac certainly and a Luciferian hero. He is a reflection of White‘s own personality and their life and experiences are so close to each other that it looks like we are reading Whites autobiography. In Australia critical reaction has been tepid if not openly hostile, while in Britain and America only a small number of critics have dissociated White from his region• al background and endeavoured to place him in a wider context. It is the purpose of the thesis to define this context, and to demonstrate that White is a highly original novelist in his own right. Of White's total output to the present time of six novels, only four are discussed here—The Aunt's Story (1948), The Tree of Man (1955).,Voss (1957), and Riders in the Chariot (1961). -

Literature and Freedom Mario Vargas Liosa In this CIS Occasional Paper, Mario Vargas Liosa highlights the mutually beneficial relationship between literature and freedom. Where freedom does not exist, censorship and self-censorship stifle creativity - literature tends to become conformist and Literature and Freedom predictable. Colonial Latin America produced scarcely a writer still worth reading in three hundred years, while in Elizabethan England disdain for dramatists saw them left in peace, allowing Shakespeare's genius to flourish. In repressive societies, though, the book is the medium best suitedto keeping freedom alive. Audio visual technology is expensive and easily controlled by those in power. Books, by contrast, can be written, reproduced and circulated by underground cultures. While praising good cinema and television, Vargas Llosa emphasises the book's unique contribution to culture and freedom. Mario Vargas Liosa Mario Vargas Liosa, born in 1936, is one of the most acclaimed Latin American writers. His books include Conversation in the Cathedral(1 969), AuntJulia and the Scrzptwriter (1977), and In Praise of the Stepmother (1988). His autobiography will be published in English translation in 1994 under the title Like a Fish in Water. In 1993 he gave the CIS's tenthJohn Bonython Lecture, entitled Questions of Conquest and Culture (0P47). In 1990 he ran unsuccessfully for the Presidency of Peru. Date ii ABSTRACT This study of Patrick White's work is chiefly concerned with the first four novels, but refers also to some poetry, the short stories, the plays and the three later novels. It traces the development of themes and techniques in these four novels in terms of artistic vision and the rendering of that vision. The early, experimental works, up to The Living and the Dead are treated at considerable length, chiefly to show how the later developments are basically improve• ments and variations on the themes and techniques which have already been used. A second reason for the length of this part of the treatment is that, in the existing criticism of White, these early works are almost entirely ignored. -

Quite a few winners have come from the English-speaking world that at one time was considered to be part of the British Commonwealth. The survey of these writers and their concerns will bring us to five continents and into various historical and social terrains. Reading will consist of poetry, drama, novels and short stories, as well as non-fiction (notably the acceptance speeches of the authors covered.) Required Texts: Course Reader with Poems by Rabindranath Tagore, W.B. Yeats, Seamus Heaney, and Rudyard Kipling available in course reader, along with some essays and short stories. J.M. Coetzee. Introduction
Introduction For more than 60 years I have worked in short bursts on my magnum opus, the Dictionary of World Biography (DWB). It demonstrates my preoccupation, even obsession, about making sense of the world to myself and sharing those insights with others. The work, inevitably, is highly personal, even semi-autobiographical, projecting my involvement in politics, teaching history, extensive travel, and absorption in music, literature, the arts, religion, philosophy, ethics, and decades of work with a disaster relief organisation and campaigns to reduce blindness. As a student in 1950, I was profoundly influenced by the great philosopher Bertrand Russell, and observed him in Melbourne at close quarters. He said: ‘Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind’. I set out the convolvulated history of the Dictionary of World Biography in my autobiography A Thinking Reed(Allen and Unwin, 2006). A variant of the text appeared as the Introduction in six editions of the DWB published by ANU Press 2014–19. ‘True Biographies of Nations?’ (edited by Karen Fox, ANU Press, 2019), a collection of papers presented at a seminar in Canberra in July 2016 about dictionaries of biography generally, includes my own contribution, ‘Writing a Dictionary of World Biography’. This Introduction draws from all three sources. In the mid-1950s I had been puzzled that no comprehensive biographical dictionary was available in paperback at a modest price. I determined to fill the gap. As a university law student I had been concerned that so many contemporaries had either a sketchy, or nonexistent, grasp of recent political history, let alone familiarity with great composers, philosophers or discoverers in other disciplines, such as medicine. -

IRWLE VOL. 10 No. II July 2014 1 Realisation through Suffering in the Select Novels of Patrick White: Voss, The Eye of The Storm and Riders In the Chariot Anitha Subramanian Suffering is an experience that God is having in and through us. It is the result of our limited consciousness. When unlimited consciousness operates, we see the result in the form of joy and delight. The human in us will see suffering as something horrible and undivine, but the divine in us will see it as God’s experience in the process of cosmic evolution. The higher we go, the clearer it becomes to our human mind that all the incidents that have taken place on earth are the experiences of God in and through each human being. Suffering is in the human mind and in the earth - consciousness. When we go beyond the earth - consciousness, when we offer our very existence to the supreme and become part and parcel of His cosmic Will on earth, we see that there is no such thing as suffering. We see only an experience, a divine cosmic experience which God himself is having in and through us. If we go through suffering then our system will be purified, and we human beings cherish suffering, unconsciously or consciously. As long as we cherish suffering, “suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope”. According to Lesley Hazelton, “It requires more courage to suffer than to die”. For Oscar Wilde, “suffering is part of the divine idea”. It is this suffering which helps in the purification of our ‘self’ forms the basis in the works of the Australian author, Patrick White.
