October 26, 1944 Biltmore Hotel (Dayton, Ohio) Milton J. Cross was best known as the "voice of the Metropolitan Opera," hosting its Saturday afternoon radio broadcasts from their inception in 1931 until 1975. His distinctive voice conveyed the excitement of live performances "from the stage of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City" for generations of radio listeners. Initially, he broadcast from his seat in "Box 44" at the old Metropolitan Opera House at Broadway and 40th Street. In 1966, he introduced the radio audience to the Met's new home at Lincoln Center as he hosted the opening night performance from a modern radio booth in the new house. Milton John Cross (April 16, 1897 – January 3, 1975) was an American radio announcer famous for his work on the NBC and ABC radio networks. He was best known as the voice of the Metropolitan Opera, hosting its Saturday afternoon radio broadcasts for 43 years, from the time of their inception in 1931 until his death in 1975.[1] Biography Born in New York City, Cross started his career just as network radio itself was in its earliest stages. He joined the New Jersey station WJZ in 1921, not just as an announcer but also as a singer, often enaging in recitals with the station's staff pianist, Keith McLeod. [2] By 1927, WJZ had moved to Manhattan and had become the flagship station of the Blue Network of NBC's new national radio network. Cross' voice became familiar as he not only delivered announcements for the Blue Network but also hosted a number of popular programs. Cross was the announcer for the quiz program Information Please and the musical humor show The Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street, among others. Metropolitan Opera broadcasts It is as the host of the Metropolitan Opera's broadcasts that Cross will be most remembered. His distinctive voice conveyed the excitement of live performances "from the stage of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City" for generations of radio listeners. 1 Milton Cross Born in Manhattan on 16 April 1897, Milton Cross was one of radio’s first full- time announcers, and remained so until his death on 3 January 1975. His association with the Saturday afternoon radio broadcasts of the Metropolitan Opera’s matinee performances began literally with the first such broadcast: a performance of Hänsel and Gretel that aired on Christmas afternoon, December 25, 1931. Although Christmas Day fell on a Friday that year, the National Broadcasting Company decided to continue broadcasting Metropolitan Opera performances over its Blue Network (which later became the American Broadcasting Company, the corporate name of the ABC network) every Saturday afternoon, a holiday from work for most American men and women. In addition to his 43 consecutive seasons as radio’s Voice of the Metropolitan Opera,” Milton Cross served as an announcer for a variety of other radio programs including “The Magic Key of RCA” (a music program sponsored by RCA Victor), “Information Please” (an early quiz show), “Coast to Coast on a Bus” (a children’s show featuring child performers), and “The Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street” (a highly popular jazz-and-blues program). He also narrated a number of film shorts (five- to fifteen-minute sound films that were shown between feature films in movie theaters), as well as educational and entertainment recordings for children, including “Peter and the Wolf” (Musicraft Records, 1949) and “The Magic of Music” (Cabot Records, 1964). And in order that people may have the opportunity to hear again the broadcasts of network radio, recordings of these broad- casts should be gathered and held in a sound library. This sound library, then, would be a central location where one could go to check-out certain broadcasts for study. However: before a library can begin to accumulate its docu- ments, an evaluation process should be undertaken to decide which broadcasts were the important contributions to radio's history. It is, then, the purpose of this study to compile a list of significant broadcasts for such a sound library. Shagawat TELEVISION RECORDING – THE ORIGINS AND EARLIEST SURVIVING LIVE TV BROADCAST RECORDINGS By Robert Shagawat E Mail: [email protected] Abstract Of Information as of October 4, 2004 updated October 2010 – April 2011 1947 DuMont RA-103 TV Set Early Kinescope Recording Machine Called the Chatham (or “Doghouse”) model Introduction - Oldest Surviving Record of Live Television Program: What is the earliest surviving live television broadcast recording? It is surprising how little definitive research and solid information is available on this topic. This article seeks to answer this question, based on what we know today. Lack of Prior Research: While there has been a significant amount of research done on the oldest surviving live radio broadcast airchecks (from 1925 or earlier), there is a scarcity of comprehensive research on the earliest live TV transmission recordings that are still in existence. This dearth of information on what remains of the formative years of television was not anticipated, given the vital importance of the TV legacy to the “baby boomers” raised on the media. It is also amazing, given the relatively recent appearance of television during the 20th century (where more documentation of its earliest records would be thought to exist). Historic Means of Capturing Live Television: First of all, we must understand how early TV broadcasts could be captured in the days before videotape and later analog and digital recording methods (as will be further elaborated below). The kinescope recording was filmed from the kinescope or cathode ray tube TV receiver, where these films of live television as taken from the kinescope device were soon themselves just called “kinescopes”.

For several days in 1994 and 1995, I sat in the “servant’s quarters” at the historic Dakota Apartment Building, Downes’ spacious six-room apartment under the eaves, with a magnificent view of Central Park, as he spoke into my old cassette recorder about his life and career. This project makes available for the first time Downes’ published criticism and these recent spoken reminiscences of more than a half-century of concert and opera going. Edward’s words will help the reader examine the development of music criticism in the United States, and its influence on audiences and music making. His clear memories of opera and concert life go back to the 1920s, and through them one gets a sense of what was available to audiences eighty years ago. Transcripts of my conversations recorded with Downes in New York form the heart of this document. These personal reminiscences are complemented by reviews published by Downes in The Boston Evening Transcript from 1939-1941, when he was chief critic for that paper. Both performance reviews and “thought” pieces will be presented showing how cultural life was discussed in print in the years leading up to World War II.
