Pepper and drawn on First National Bank of Hartford, dated Feb 17, 1875, strong signature somewhat affected by the bank handstamp, Very Fine Twain wrote many of his classic novels during his 17 years in Hartford (1874–1891) 400 2002 6 Fillmore, Millard Free Frank "Free M. Feb 27, 1862" circular datestamp at bottom left, Very Fine (Photo = 1 152) 100 149 U.S. COVERS Theodore Roosevelt Joseph Roswell Hawley 2003 LotNo Start Price 2003 Roosevelt, Theodore (1858-1919, 26th President 1901-09) TLS dated May 2, 1898 signed "T. Roosevelt" on Navy Dept stationery (Roosevelt as Assistant Secretary), addressed to a Charles Clay in Hartford Ct informing that he would not be able to join the Rough Riders as "We are already over enlisted.", bold signature with some ink bleed, Fine and scarce, accompanied by the Navy Dept official envelope (roughly opened and reduced at left) with a letter to Mr Clay from Connecticut Senator JR Hawley informing him that he had sent a message to Roosevelt urging him to accept Mr Clay into the unit; Roosevelt's signature in the 1898-99 period is quite elusive The Rough Riders was a nickname given to the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry, one of three such regiments raised in 1898 for the Spanish-American War and the only one to see combat. Commanded by Col. Leonard Wood, his second in command was former Assistant Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt, a strong advocate for the Cuban War of Independence. Roosevelt resigned from his Navy Dept position four days after this letter was written in order to join his unit. 1000 150 U.S. COVERS LotNo Maritime Markings Start Price 2004 6 New York Mar 19 Clamshell Postmark, full-strike in red (very scarce) on folded letter addressed to Hartford, Connecticut datelined "Liverpool Jany 27th 1804," ms "P Argo" and rated "14½" (2c ship fee + 12½c domestic rate 90-150 miles), some typical light aging but overall Very Fine (Photo = 1 152) 100 2005 6 "SHIP" Handstamp on 1812 Prices Current Liverpool to Portsmouth NH with red "Ship" handstamp and full strike of Boston Sep 2 arrival cds, ms "P Lpool Packet via Boston" and "12" rating (12d = 1 shilling transatlantic rate), light central vertical file fold, Very Fine (Photo = 1 152) 75 2006 2006 6 Philadelphia Full-Rigged Ship Handstamp, a light but full strike on folded letter sheet originating in St Thomas ((April 4 1835 docketing) and addressed to Petersburg, Va and accompanied by red octagonal "Phila 28 Apr" date stamp, ms "20¾" rating upper right (2c ship fee + 18¾c domestic postage for delivery 180-400 miles), ms "P Delaware", light horiz file fold, Very Fine and choice example of this popular ship handstamp. The Philadelphia "Rigged Ship" handstamp was used only on incoming mail for addresses beyond the port and has a recorded use from May 1834 to Nov 9, 1835. 750 2007 6 1845 Folded Letter Rioverde to Esmereldas (Ecuador) with Negative "Sailing Ship" handstamp, datelined "17 de Julio en 1845", Very Fine and choice example of this incredibly rare marking with the comment "the only one I have ever seen" from an advanced collector of ship markings; 2012 Brian Moorhouse certificate stating "...almost certainly of private origin. The cover was probabaly carried outside the postal system and went by sea for the short (circa 40km) journey between the two coastal locations." (Photo = 1 152) 750 151 U.S. COVERS 2004/100 2002/100 2005/75 2007/750 Ex 2011/75 2012/100 2015/100 Ex 2016/120 Ex 2018/90 2019/75 2021/75 2022/100 2023/50 Ex 2024/100 Ex 2026/75 2028/100 2029/50 2030/75 152 U.S. COVERS Frederick L Barredo Felipe Barredo 2008 LotNo Start Price 2008 6 1855 Cover Barbados to Baltimore, folded letter dateline "Barbados 6th Dec 1855" and including another 2-page letter (in a different hand from Barbados dated Nov 27 1855), ms notation "p Thos Trowbridge via Trinidad", fantastic strikes of the New Haven Con Dec 31 1865 transit cds, "5" (3c domestic postage to Baltimore plus 2c ship fee) and ornamental "Ship" maritime handstamp, some aging along a horiz file fold but still Very Fine and eye-catching. The addressee, Barreda & Brother of Baltimore, was a firm that acted as agents of the Government of Peru for the shipment of guano from the Chincha Islands (three small islands 13 miles off the SW coast of Peru) to the United States in the 1850s, primarily as a source of fertilizer for the tobacco industry in Virginia. The letter refers to business matters and mentions "Since our last there have been several arrivals of slaves but chiefly of inferior quality. Some very superior." 150 2009 2009 6 "Correos de la Chimba/ Bolivia", excellent strike of the negative oval handstamp with outline of a steamship design, additional "Franca" handstamp on envelope addressed to Valparaiso Chile (22 Set 77 arrival backstamp), envelope some light edge wrinkling and a tiny edge break at top, Very Fine and choice; letters carried by ship from the Bolivian port of Chimba to overseas destinations were struck with the oval handstamp. This marking was employed by the postmaster at Chimba in conjunction with the "Franca" handstamp to indicate postage was paid. 500 153 U.S. COVERS LotNo Transatlantic Covers Start Price 2010 6 1822/68 Transatlantic Covers to Europe, 21 covers or folded letter sheets, all but one stampless, destinations include England (3), France (5), Germany (12), Switzerland (1), various uses, rates, transits, etc, few ships: "James Monroe", "Per Scotia;" 3c (65), 12c (69) to Germany, ms. "By Bremen or Hamburg," etc., expect usual amount flaws/faults but overall Fine, an interesting group (Photo = 1 www) 150 Railroad Markings 2011 6 Naugutuck R.R Dec 20 clear red cds Towle 87-A-1, rarity VI) and italics "5" on folded letter to NY City datelined "Waterbury (Ct) Dec 20 1850", some light foxing spots, accompanied by envelope franked with #11 tied by same cancel (Jul 3) in black, F-VF (Photo = 1 152) 75 2012 6 N. Haven & Greenfield R.R., complete and well struck 30mm red 4/5/(50) cds on fls to New York, pencil rate "5", Very Fine, attractive cover. Provenance: Knapp Collection (lot 745). (Photo = 1 152) 100 Forwarding Agents Tontine Coffee House (right) 2013 2013 6 Bryden's Coffee House/ New York, full strike of the negative marking in black with central design of a packet ship, struck on back side of a printed folded letter datelined "New York le 20 Ganvier 1809", addressed to Paris, Very Fine and among the rarest forwarder markings extant; this particular handstamp was used by J. Brydens Tontine Coffee House during a short 3-month period in 1809. 2000 154 U.S. COVERS "U.S. Sloop of War St. Louis" 2014 LotNo Start Price 2014 6 U.S. NAVAL LYCEUM lovely strike of the oval handstamp with illustrated full-rugged ship, postmarked New London, Conn Aug 30 on envelope addressed to a Lieutenant on the "U.S. Sloop of War St. Louis/ Western Coast of Africa" with notation "Care of U.S. Naval Lyceum room/ Brooklyn, N.Y.", envelope a bit of edge wear and a tiny clipped corner upper left but overall Very Fine and a most attractive example of this forwarding mark The "U.S. Sloop of War St. Louis", commissioned in 1828, served the US Navy for most of the 19th century. After a tour of the Mediterranean and Turkey, "St. Louis" returned to New York in May 1855 and sailed out in November to help suppress the slave trade along the western coast of Africa, returning to New York in Feb 1858.
