Theodore Roosevelt

Joseph Roswell Hawley 2003 LotNo Start Price 2003 Roosevelt, Theodore (1858-1919, 26th President 1901-09) TLS dated May 2, 1898 signed "T. Roosevelt" on Navy Dept stationery (Roosevelt as Assistant Secretary), addressed to a Charles Clay in Hartford Ct informing that he would not be able to join the Rough Riders as "We are already over enlisted.", bold signature with some ink bleed, Fine and scarce, accompanied by the Navy Dept official envelope (roughly opened and reduced at left) with a letter to Mr Clay from Senator JR Hawley informing him that he had sent a message to Roosevelt urging him to accept Mr Clay into the unit; Roosevelt's signature in the 1898-99 period is quite elusive The Rough Riders was a nickname given to the 1st Volunteer Cavalry, one of three such regiments raised in 1898 for the Spanish-American War and the only one to see combat. Commanded by Col. Leonard Wood, his second in command was former Assistant Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt, a strong advocate for the Cuban War of Independence. Roosevelt resigned from his Navy Dept position four days after this letter was written in order to join his unit. 1000

Worden, bit of mounting residue on reverse, Molesworth notation "Rare - only few known," Very Fine, a spectacular first day cover being offered on its own merits (Scott $17,500) This cover is accompanied by a folder of correspondence that details its provenance and authenticity. The cover was purchased from Jack Molesworth in 1974 and sumbitted to the AFDCS for a certificate in 1977. Adam K. Bert, chairman of the Expertising Committee, wrote a full-page letter detailing the reasons he and others were skepical of the cover; specifically, the wavy line Washington, DC postmark was unlike any they knew to be used at that time, and the difference in impression between the lines and the circle raised red flags. Through correspondence with another collector (William S. Ahrens) it was revealed that this cover had a "sister," a 564-69 combination first day cover with the same type of Washington, DC cancellation. The correspondence tantalizingly concludes with a letter dated June 7, 1982 from Ahrens to the owner, which reads: "I was fortunate to attend the AFDCS convention at Washington, DC. During a meeting Mr. Ed Siskin mentioned that there is now proof of a cancellation device existing in Washington, DC on March 20, 1923 which produced that thin wavy cancel. In other words your cover is legit. If you resubmit it you should receive a good certificate. P.S. It was one helluva convention." 1000

189 FLORIDA IN THE CONFEDERACY The Deane R. Briggs, M.D. Collection of Florida in the Confederacy Bidders are referred to the classic work "Florida Postal History During the Civil War" by Dr Deane Briggs. Nearly every cover offered in this section is pictured in the volume which goes into far greater detail, on the cancels and the uses, than we can in the auction catalog. Don't let the number of covers in this section lead you to believe that Florida Confederate covers are "common". Far from it as this collection results from many years of searching and scouring dealer stocks, auction catalogs and cajoling fellow collectors to part with their "treasures". Many of these markings, cancels and uses are unique, or very nearly so, and very few of them have a population exceeding the sum of your digits. We are very pleased to offer this important collection of Confederate Florida postal history.
