His father (Elja Lurja), who had prospered during the New Economic Policy, took his family to Riga, Latvia while Boris was a babY, ahead of Stalin’s coming reversal of that relaxation of austere &RPPXQLVWSURFHGXUH/DWYLDZKLOHQRWDQLGHDOORFDWLRQIRU-HZVZDVQRWW\SLÀHGE\DWUXO\ oppressive, state-sanctioned anti-Semitism. On June 22, 1941, the Soviet Union was invaded by its erstwhile ally, Germany, and, a mere three weeks later, Latvia was occupied by the Wehrmacht. Four months later, the massacre at Rumbula Forest occurred in which tens of thousands of Riga’s Jews were killed, including Boris’ mother, sister, and grandmother. Only Boris himself and his father would survive the war. 7KHVDGLVWLFSULYDWLRQVLQÁLFWHGXSRQWKRVHKHOGLQWKH.D=HWV FRQFHQWUDWLRQFDPSV DUHZHOO known, and were not spared the Latvian Jews (including Boris and his father). The inmates were moved from camp to camp as the German régime pleased, or as the military situation made necessarY. In mid-1944, the Soviet troops came so close that the camp guards vanished. Now freed, Boris wandered the countryside a bit, but, when night came, returned (surprisingly to people who haven’t been through anything like this) to the camp he’d known for some time. It was the only obvious shelter available to him. Much as the Soviets had liberated Boris several years before, now Boris took matters into his own hands, liberating himself by making his way to the American lines, where his language skills made of him a valuable asset to the occupation forces in conquered Germany. Now, the ‘untermensch’ was ‘über’ indeed! In 1946, Boris emigrated to America (a scant two years after he’d been a prisoner of the Nazis) entering a country that had experienced a very different war than Europe had known, picking up his art that had necessarily been put aside during his ‘detention’ by the Germans. It could be said that when Europe goes to war, the people starve — when North America JRHVWRZDUULFKHVÁRZ%RULVIRXQGWKHFRPPHUFLDOLVPRQWKHZHVWVLGHRIWKH$WODQWLF WKRURXJKO\GLVWDVWHIXO7KDWVSHFLÀFDOO\ZDVDQGLVWKHWDUJHWRI %RULV·12:KDWLVQRZFDOOHG FRPPRGLÀFDWLRQLVQRQHZWKLQJ In the Sixties, the country had caught up a bit with Boris. That show was condemned, praised, reviewed, discussed and made an imprint for the avant-garde anti-establishment movement. Upon his return to the United States, the Doom show was presented at the March GallerY, on East 10th Street, in the young artists neighborhood, predating the NO!art movement, which I took to uptown Manhattan to the established artist section. It was a black basement gallery and we had the now famous NO SHOW, with our mission statement which fought for an end to genocide, prejudice, art related cabals, consumerism, artist repression and

Photograph: Don Treeger/AP A Ugandan gay rights group is suing an American Christian evangelist it accuses of waging a campaign of homophobia in the east African country. Sexual Minorities Uganda filed the lawsuit against minister Scott Lively on Wednesday in Springfield, Massachusetts, under a statute that the group says allows non-citizens to launch US court actions for violations of international law. Frank Mugisha, who heads the pressure group, said it was targeting Lively for "helping spread propaganda and violence" against gay people in Uganda. "We hope that he will be held accountable for what he did in Uganda," Mugisha, who won the Robert F Kennedy human rights award last year, was quoted as saying by the Associated Press. "We want to send out a clear message to him and to others." The complaint claims Lively issued a call in Uganda to fight against a "genocidal" and "paedophilic" gay movement which he "likened to the Nazis and Rwandan murderers". It seeks a judgment that Lively's actions violate international law and human rights.

2008 Human Rights Report: Zimbabwe Page 1 of 43 2008 Human Rights Report: Zimbabwe BUREAU OF DEMOCRACY, HUMAN RIGHTS, AND LABOR 2008 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices February 25, 2009 Zimbabwe, with a population of approximately nine million, is constitutionally a republic, but the government, dominated by President Robert Mugabe and his Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) since independence, was not freely elected and was authoritarian. The last four national elections--the presidential election in 2002, the parliamentary elections in March 2005, the harmonized presidential and parliamentary elections in March 2008, and the presidential run-off in June--were not free and fair. In the March 29 elections two factions of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) gained a parliamentary majority. Mugabe was declared the winner of the June 27 run-off election after opposing candidate Morgan Tsvangirai withdrew due to ZANU-PF-directed violence that made a free and fair election impossible. Negotiations subsequently took place between ZANU-PF and the two MDC factions aimed at agreement on a power-sharing government. On September 15, all three parties signed a power-sharing agreement under which Mugabe would retain the presidency and Tsvangirai would become prime minister-elect; however, the provisions of the deal had not been implemented by year's end. Although the constitution allows for multiple parties, ZANU-PF, through the use of government and paramilitary forces, intimidated and committed abuses against opposition parties and their supporters and obstructed their activities. The Joint Operation Command (JOC), a group of senior security and civilian authorities, maintained control of the security forces, and often used them to control opposition to ZANU-PF.

  • Detained Activists at Risk of Ill-Treatment
Further information on UA: 288/11 Index: AFR 46/022/2011 Zimbabwe Date: 26 September 2011 URGENT ACTION DETAINED ACTIVISTS AT RISK OF ILL-TREATMENT Two leaders of the social justice movement, Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA), have been denied bail and remanded in custody until 6 October. The two women, who are both recovering from recent medical operations, were arrested on 21 September while on a peaceful march. Ten activists arrested at the same time have now been released. Jenni Williams and Magodonga Mahlangu, together with 10 other activists, were arrested on 21 September, after police in Bulawayo used excessive force to break up a planned peaceful march commemorating the United Nations’ International Day of Peace. The march had been organised by the social justice movement, WOZA. Ten of the activists were released without charge when prosecutors refused to prosecute, while Jenni Williams and Magodonga Mahlangu were denied bail and remanded in custody for two weeks. They are being held in Mlondolozi Prison. Lawyers are appealing to the High Court against the decision to denial bail. Amnesty International is concerned that the two activists’ may not be accorded their right to a speedy and fair trial as previously, human rights defenders arrested on spurious criminal charges have been unreasonably denied bail. The state often invokes section 121 of the Criminal Procedures and Evidence Act to delay release of detainees by seven days. This law has been applied selectively against critics of government policies. Amnesty International is also concerned about the ongoing harassment and intimidation of WOZA members and other human rights defenders in Zimbabwe who are exercising their right to peaceful protest.

KENNEDY CENTER FOR JUSTICE AND HUMAN RIGHTS 2 NOWHERE TO TURN: THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE FAILURE TO MONITOR HUMAN RIGHT VIOLATIONS IN WESTERN SAHARA AND TINDOUF REFUGEE CAMPS I. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS The Sahrawi are the indigenous people of Western Sahara, who descended from Berber and Arab tribes.1 The following is a report on the human rights situation facing the Sahrawi people who reside in the disputed territory of Western Sahara under Moroccan control and in the Sahrawi refugee camps near Tindouf, Algeria. Much of the information contained in this report is based on information gained from interviews and meetings during a visit to the region of an international delegation led by the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights (RFK Center). For nearly 40 years, both the Kingdom of Morocco and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Saguía el Hamra and Río de Oro (POLISARIO Front) have claimed sovereignty over Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony. After years of armed conflict, in 1991 the United Nations (UN) established the Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), a peacekeeping mission to oversee the cease-fire between the Kingdom of Morocco and the POLISARIO Front and to organize and ensure a referendum on self-determination. Today, 22 years after the establishment of MINURSO, the referendum has yet to take place.
