One of the women in the group was constantly complaining — the bus seats are uncomfortable, the food is terrible, it is too hot, it is too cold, the accommodations are awful. The group arrived at the site of the famous Blarney Stone. “Good luck will be followin’ ya all your days if you kiss the Blarney Stone,” the guide said. “Unfortunately, it is being cleaned today and so no one will be able to kiss it. Perhaps we can come back tomorrow.” “We can’t be here tomorrow,” the always complaining woman said. “We have some other boring tour to go on. So, I guess we can’t kiss the stone.” “Well now,” the guide said, “it is said that if you kiss someone who has kissed the stone, you’ll have the same good fortune.” “And I suppose, you’ve kissed the stone!” the woman retorted. “No, ma’am,” the frustrated guide said, “but I’ve sat on it.” In our First Reading this weekend, the Israelites complained to Moses, trying to get him to turn around and lead them back to Egypt. Complainers, as most of us know by now, seldom complain directly to the people who can take care of their complaints. They will rather complain to anyone who will listen, but not to the one they are whining about. And what they are complaining can never be their fault. Just like the chosen people in the Old Testament, Moses and Aaron were the recipients of the Complaint Department. So, what did these brothers do? They referred the problem up one level of management — to God. God must have seen the heaviness of their complaints that some of the Israelites were not able to enter the Promised Land. The load was too much for them to bear as they wandered in the desert. This is the gist — In this letter, God always provides for our needs. God gives us what we need and when we need them most. When the roof does not leak and we have food on the table, does it really make sense if we grumble about having a bigger house or a more sumptuous meal? We may not have had the best food each day, or the tastiest bread each morning, but haven’t our needs been met by our generous God? Some said that complainers are whine babies. Next time you hear people whining and complaining, ask them what kind of cheese they wanted to go with their whine. Final bottom line: prayer, not complaining, whining or grumbling, is God’s way to change things. Prayer is being humble enough to ask God what we really need, It involves asking that His will be done. Have a blessed and restful weekend. Fr. PJ The Quail and the Manna. “The LORD said to Moses: I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Tell them: In the evening twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will have your fill of bread, and then you will know that I, the LORD, am your God.” Exodus 16:11-12 Stewardship: Time, Talent & Treasure What identifies a steward? Safeguarding material and human resources and using them responsibly are one answer; so is generous giving of time, talent, and treasure.
