Does anybody recognize any of these locations in the photographs on this page? Leave a note for the Journalism class! Kings Dominion By: Sydney Grinter Kings Dominion is a great summer vacation spot because of all the fun rides, food, side games, camping area, Soak City, Planet Snoopy, and many other outdoor activities. There are tons of things to do in Doswell, VA but when you want something fun to do this probably the most interesting place you could go. Kings Dominion has tons of rides with world records and has made history with a few of their of rides. Kings Dominion has rides for kids, teens, and even adults. Some record setting thrill rides are the Anaconda, Dominator, Drop Tower, Flight of Fear, Intimidator 305, Rebel Yell, and Volcano: The Blast Coaster. The Anaconda is the first looping roller coaster with an underwater tunnel. The Dominator is the longest floorless roller coaster at 4,210 ft. The Drop Tower has the longest gyro height drop at 272 ft. The Flight of Fear is one of the first linear induction motor (LIM) launched. The Intimida- tor is the tallest, fastest, most thrilling ride on the east coast. Rebel Yell was featured in the 1977 movie “Rollercoaster.” Volcano: The Blast Coaster first LIM launched roller coaster with the tallest inversion. Kings Dominion has some other pretty cool rides but I only named the famous ones. They even have Soak City which is like a water park. Kings Dominion has a wide variety of rides and entertainment opportunities for the whole family. A TRIP TO TAIPEI 101 Marie Gregory Taipei 101 is definitely the place to see during summer vacation. It is the sixth tallest building in the world, measuring at 1,671 ft (508m) One of Taiwan’s major tourist attractions, this building once broke world records back when it was first built in 2004. It is an incredible structure, and the engineering is very impressive. With its impossible architecture and green engineering, this building is a major landmark in Taiwan. The building is home to some of the fastest elevators in the world, reaching speeds of 1,010m per minute(55.22 ft. per second) . However, in order to visit Taipei 101’s other major attractions, you must pay an additional fee. One of the main attractions is the Damper, which is painted gold and designed to help prevent Taipei 101 from suffering damage from natural disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons. The 660 tonne damper is the worlds largest visible damper and can be viewed from the eighty ninth floor. The 89th floor is also home to several observatories which overlook the Taipei Basin. It can be reached by either using the elevator or climbing the stairs. Two floors above this is the outdoor observatory, located on the 91st floor. From there you can observe a breathtaking view of the surrounding area. However, that’s as far as regular visitors can go. Of course...if you are a member of the “Summit 101” club, you are welcome to access the 101st floor wherein lies the home of this exclusive VIP club. Sadly, the only way to become a member or receive an invitation to join this club is if you are either a foreign dignitary, a Hollywood actor, or a person who has spent over NT $ 1 million on purchases in the Taipei 101 mall. Taipei 101’s impressive engineering is not reserved to its architectural structure, but its amazing lights as well!Taipei 101’s memora- ble shape is based on a bamboo stalk, and the lights in each of the eight sections of this building. can be organized to represent different images and messages. (Example: In 2005, on the 100th anniversary of Einstein’s theory of relativity, the tower displayed the words E=mc2) The lights are so fluid and flexible that on every day of the week, from 6:00 to 10:00 each night, the building displays one of the seven colours of the spectrum. On Monday, it displays red, on Tuesday, it displays or- ange, on Wednesday, it displays yellow, and so on and so forth. Taipei 101 is just awesome. It is not only a building, but a place of major events. The most memorable events that occur at Taipei 101 is the annual New Year’s fireworks display. Attended by hundreds of people, these firework displays are also broadcast live on TV. With the shows lasting sometimes to four minutes, It's no wonder they are attended by so many people. The amazing array of fireworks is only one of the many reasons that visiting this building should be on your bucket list! Summer destination: Jersey shore by: Yasmine Bryant (Sigh) Next summer, the lovely Jersey Shore should be on your list for ‘summer destinations.’ With gorgeous annual temperatures from the high 70’s to mid- and high 80’s, giving Jersey the perfect temperatures. You may make a splash into the beautiful Atlantic Ocean with its warm waters just at the mid 70’s. Just imagine, walking down a gorgeous, sunlit, sandy boardwalk- how about with a delicious Oreo-flavored ice cream slowly beginning to melt! Jersey Shore has some of the best, and craziest ice cream flavors you’ll ever taste! If you like Churros, you’ll love ‘Cinnamon Churro’ flavored ice cream from Jenkinson’s Sweet Shop! The Boardwalk has some of the most fantastic restaurants in the whole state of Jersey. From 520 stacked Crepes, to crab fries. When you visit the boardwalk, I guarantee you’ll try something you’ve never heard of, hey- it won’t hurt to try! ATLANTIC CITY While you’re in Jersey, why not stay in the world-famous, beautiful Atlantic City!? Atlantic City is filled with amusement parks, beautiful attractions, boating/fishing activities, shopping, spas, delicious dining, golf, and amazing entertainment! Don’t forget the gorgeous beach with fun activities including: surfing/surfing lessons, kayaking, windsurfing, beach volleyball, boogie boarding, and jet-skiing. The boardwalk is a fantastic chill spot for all families. Whether you’re looking to chill or have a great activity- filled day, the boardwalk is the place to go! Atlantic City is gorgeous and again is PERFECT for families of all sizes! Your summer is totally incomplete without going to Jersey! Six Flags: Great adventure! By Yasmine Bryant Where should you be next summer? SIX FLAGS!!! Why? Six Flags is constantly breaking records for fastest, tallest, even longest roller coasters! I’m going to tell about the most thrill-filled rides that broke records.
