But overall, I like her lethal abilities and her spycraft. I find it really cool that her helpers are the non-human fables, like the three blind mice. Some aspects of this are pretty dark, but readers of the Fables and Fairest series should not find that surprising. Good, but not my favorite of this series, and not on the level of Fables. View all 8 comments. Nov 07, Sherry rated it it was ok. This volume is Fairest: Cinderella - Of Men and Mice Volume 4 relatively minor addition to the Fairest graphic novel series. The story here is very slight and, sadly, not all that exciting. There is a bit of material included that relates to the main Fables storyline, but it doesn't advance that story much. It has a cartoony feel, and many of the recurring Fables characters were almost unrecognizable to me. I could only identify Snow White because she was surrounded by her kids. Unless you are a completist, you might want to skip this one. An ARC of this graphic novel was provided by the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. View 1 comment. This comic series doesn't follow the old Stan Lee rule of consider every issue to be someone's first issue. But even not knowing every detail, I was still able to dig in and enjoy some sparkling at times dialogue and a good fairy-tale spy thriller. Adding to my enjoyment of this book is a consistent artistic style that allowed me to identify each character from issue to issue with ease. The included single issue covers are also a highlight of the collection, paying homage to the spy novels and Fairest: Cinderella - Of Men and Mice Volume 4 of a by-gone era. Of Mice and Men reminded me that there are interesting things being done in comic books today and that I'm behind on a lot of it. It encouraged me to seek out other collections within the Fables universe and maybe get caught up a bit before the series winds down early next year. Maybe after reading some of the issues that lead up to it, I will give this one another shot and come away with a greater appreciation for how some of what I read hit fits into the larger narrative unfolding.

  • Bill Willingham's Fables—A Fairy-Tale Epic
humanities Article We All Live in Fabletown: Bill Willingham’s Fables—A Fairy-Tale Epic for the 21st Century Jason Marc Harris Department of English, Texas A&M University, MS 4227 TAMU, College Station, TX 77843, USA; [email protected]; Tel.: +1-979-845-8358 Academic Editor: Claudia Schwabe Received: 1 March 2016; Accepted: 9 May 2016; Published: 19 May 2016 Abstract: Bill Willingham’s Fables comic book series and its spin-offs have spanned fourteen years and reinforce that fairy-tale characters are culturally meaningful, adaptable, subversive, and pervasive. Willingham uses fairy-tale pastiche and syncreticism based on the ethos of comic book crossovers in his redeployment of previous approaches to fairy-tale characters. Fables characters are richer for every perspective that Willingham deploys, from the Brothers Grimm to Disneyesque aesthetics and more erotic, violent, and horrific incarnations. Willingham’s approach to these fairy-tale narratives is synthetic, idiosyncratic, and libertarian. This tension between Willingham’s subordination of fairy-tale characters to his overarching libertarian ideological narrative and the traditional folkloric identities drives the storytelling momentum of the Fables universe. Willingham’s portrayal of Bigby (the Big Bad Wolf turned private eye), Snow White (“Fairest of Them All”, Director of Operations of Fabletown, and avenger against pedophilic dwarves), Rose Red (Snow’s divergent, wild, and jealous sister), and Jack (narcissistic trickster) challenges contemporary assumptions about gender, heroism, narrative genres, and the very conception of a fairy tale. Emerging from negotiations with tradition and innovation are fairy-tale characters who defy constraints of folk and storybook narrative, mythology, and metafiction.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (ptsd) as posthumanity in graphic narratives Lisa DeTora Hofstra University ORCID ID: 0000-0001-5348-2638 In Trauma Culture: The Politics of Terror and Loss in Media and Literature (2005), E. Ann Kaplan describes how the us experience of the terrorist attacks of 9/11 shifted studies of trauma, displacing its primary considerations from individual experiences, like shell shock or domestic violence, to collective events like the Holocaust. This social and intellectual possibility arose through a reframing of post-traumatic stress disorder (ptsd) from character defect to disease as well as considered work by key scholars such as Cathy Carruth (1994), Shoshana Felman (1991), or Dominick La Capra (2001) which drew on earlier events such as the Gulf War. Early clinical descriptions of ptsd appeared in Judith Herman’s seminal work Trauma and Kaukiainen, K., Kurikka, K., Mäkelä, H., Nykänen, E., Nyqvist, S., Raipola, J., Riippa, A. & Samola, H. (Eds) (2020). Narratives of fear and safety. Work like Herman’s raised social consciousness and reframed its understanding of individual sufferers, calling for respect, understanding and compassion for those traumatized even in unpopular circumstances. By 2001, ptsd had become a medical – and social – condition worthy of treatment. A new vision of trauma had become possible, a collective, shared experience, that minimized stigma for the individual.

  • Comic Book Princesses for Grown-Ups: Cinderella Meets The
Comic Book Princesses For Grown-Ups: Cinderella Meets the Pages of the Superhero Rebecca-Anne C. Do Rozario Comic book superheroes and fairy tale princesses are stalwarts of contemporary children’s culture.1 Yet, they epitomise an intensifying gender segregation that is manifested and negotiated even up to the representation of female fairy tale protagonists in adult comics. This article examines the appearances of the iconic fairy tale princess, Cinderella, in twenty-first century adult comics including Bill Willingham’s Fables and Joe Tyler and Ralph Tedesco’s Grimm Fairy Tales. The tales of Perrault, the Grimms and Disney have shaped the contemporary iconography of Cinderella, emphasising the heroine’s journey from ashes and housework to tiaras and handsome princes. These popular tales, problematised by easy misogyny and patriarchal expectations, have overshadowed earlier versions of the Cinderella story, in which the heroine attacks her despised stepmother and beheads ogresses. Rediscovering the earlier, cunning and feisty incarnations of Cinderella, including Basile’s “The Cinderella Cat” and d’Aulnoy’s “Finette Cendron,” it can be seen how fairy tales’ interests in costume, masquerade and cunning have been readily absorbed into the comic book medium. Agnes B. Curry and Josef Velazquez call superhero stories “the next step in the fairy tale tradition,”2 and once we strip the patriarchal trappings from the early tales of Cinderella, the character can bridge this transition. Cinderella may sit as easily upon the shelves in a COLLOQUY text theory critique 24 (2012). © Monash University. www.arts.monash.edu.au/ecps/colloquy/journal/issue024/do_rozario.pdf 192 Rebecca-Anne C.

More specifically, this essay sheds light on how Vertigo engages in a critical, ironic, and sometimes ambiguous discourse with both the history of the medium and staple practices and traditions from the mainstream and alternative wings of the American comics production. In so doing, I maintain that Vertigo is characterized by a hybrid identity and has developed a “double awareness” that allows it to appeal to both mainstream and alternative audiences. Vertigo’s hybridity, however, is not devoid of cultural, political, and even sociological implications that upset the categories of reception and production structuring the field of American comics. These im plications underlying both the hybrid character of the label and its concomitant politics of demarcation in regards to the mainstream/alternatve dialectic will first be explored through the label’s obsession with processes of rewriting and recuperation, and second, through a close-reading of some of Vertigo promotional books’ covers. Résumé À la lumière d’une étude de cas examinant les pratiques éditoriales ainsi que le discours politique et culturel du label américain de bande dessinée Vertigo (DC Comics), cet article illustre la faillibilité du modèle binaire mainstream vs.

  • The Devil Is a Myth: the Dynamic Uses of the Folkloresque Within Hellboy and Fables
The Devil is a Myth: The Dynamic Uses of the Folkloresque within Hellboy and Fables By Amy Richardson A thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Folklore Memorial University of Newfoundland October 2019 St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador Abstract This thesis engages with the theoretical concept of the folkloresque, which considers the way in which folklore, folkloric tropes, motifs, and fuzzy allusion are integrated into popular culture materials to differing ends. Mike Mignola’s Hellboy and Bill Willingham’s Fables are considered in the vein of the folkloresque. As comics as a medium has different attributes form prose or other folkloresque products, this thesis considers the content, characters, prose, and artwork within the two series. Hellboy uses the folkloresque categories of integration and portrayal. The series uses legends and folktales to different ends in a number of different narrative arcs. Fables plays with the folkloresque category of parody to expand upon readers’ preconceived ideas of folktale characters. Intertextuality plays heavily into folkloresque texts, adding differing dimensions depending on the reader’s already-known knowledge of folklore and this dynamic influence is examined. 2 Acknowledgements My advisor, Daniel Peretti, has been an immense help throughout writing my thesis; his insight, encouragement, and helpful advice has helped to make this thesis coherent. After the “Aha!” moment I had in one of my first courses, Holly Everett assured me that I could, in fact, write about comics and folklore. My graduate cohort was always supportive and willing to listen to any issues that arose with ideas or syntax.
