Gwilt, Esq., Icklingham,where that gentleman had arranged in one room a variety of Roman antiquities found at Icktingham,and in another a collectionof Saxon weaponsand ornaments,from the adjoiningparish of West Stow. • The paper by Sir Henry E. Bunbury, Bart., on the nature of the Roman occupationat Icklingham,whichis printed in p. 250,washere read. The Secretarythen gavea brief explanationofthe SaxonrelicsexhibitedbyMr. Gwilt,and calledattention to•the fact thatZrelics of the Anglo-Saxonperiod had beenfoundin Icklingham,whileon the Hedth in the adjoiningparish of Stow,and near to the site of the Roman camp at Icklingham,Saxon antiquities alone are found ; leading to the belief that the two races were here in opposition to each other. The number of skeletons found, and the nature of the objects discoveredwith them,lie observed,shew that Stow Heath must havebeen for a considerabletimeused as a burialplace. The relicsconsistof urns rudely designed, andformedbyhandout ofblackearth; bossesofshields,andspearsofiron,&c.; bronze fibulteand clasps,with fragmentsof cloth adheringto them; and beads. Thelatter are numerous,and principallyof amber; but some are of glass,of variouscolours, and others of bakedearth painted. Some of a black colour have the zig-zagorna- ment in white. A fewof polishedwhitepebblehavealsobeenmet with, and oneof jet. Starting in the Ram Meadow car park, the following walk takes you on a circular route past the town's main sights and shops, with a few curios thrown in for good measure. At a leisurely pace it should take approximately 2 hours to complete. Bury St Edmunds car parks charge every day of the week, but are cheaper on Sundays. There are public toilets at the car park. A market takes over the centre of town every Wednesday and Saturday throughout the year. Abbot's Bridge From the car park, face the cathedral tower in the distance, and head through the courtyard of the Fox pub and out on to Mustow Street. Cross the road and turn right to find Abbot's Bridge, which dates back to the 12th century, and originally linked Eastgate Street with the Abbey's vineyard on the opposite bank of the river Lark. Beside this, you can still see the Keeper's cell, from which he would have operated the portcullis which protected the Abbey from unwanted visitors. The Aviary A little further along Mustow Street, enter the Abbey gardens on your left. The information board in front of you includes the current opening hours of the Abbey grounds, which vary with the changing seasons. Head straight up the path, and fork right at the first opportunity, you will find the aviary, and beyond this duck under the archway to enter the sensory garden. -

THE SAXHAMS PARISH COUNCIL Minutes of the Meeting held on 9th May 2019 at St Andrews Church, Great Saxham Present: Councillors: Michael Burt (Chairman), Jonathan Clarke (Councillor), Sue Dunn (Councillor), Helen Ferguson (Councillor) Rosemary Irish (Councillor) Suzie Winkler (Councillor) and Michelle Thompson (Clerk) and two Parishioners The Chairman, Michael Burt welcomed everyone to the meeting. 1. Election of Chairman - Mike Burt was elected as Chairman. This was proposed by Sue Dunn and seconded by Jonathan Clarke. Mike was thanked for all the excellent work he does for the Parish Council. 2. Apologies for absence – Nil. 3. Declarations of Interest – Suzie Winkler made a declaration of interest with regard to matters involving the Umbrello as it is owned by Saxham Hall. 4 Minutes of last PC meeting held on 28th February 2019 – The Minutes were approved by all present and signed off by the Chairman. 5. Matters Arising from Minutes of 28th February 2019 • Chestnut Tree – Very much an on going issue within the Parish Michael Rutterford, West Suffolk Council Tree Specialist came in March to inspect the trees positioned at Twites Corner Great Saxham. His report suggested that the trees were in relatively good condition. He was investigating into the land ownership after observing that an Oak Tree on the site had had a brace fitted. It has however not been established who is responsible for this parcel of land and therefore further investigations are to take place • Village Guide - This is in the process of being updated, Councillor Winkler pointed out her concern that the guide includes a village map that highlights the site of the Umbrello and the China Pond at Saxham Hall. -
