REMZİ BULUT Mehmet Akif Ersoy University, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Economics [email protected] ABSTRACT Most of the Gagauz population live in Bucak region in the South of Republic of Moldova. Gagauz people’s language has the closest accent to Turkish language spoken in Turkey. The Gagauz gained their autonomy September 23 in 1993.Their population covers %4 of the total population of Moldova. Despite the fact that The Gagauz is a small society in the Balkans, Turkey attaches high importance to them. The connection between Gagauz people and Turkey reaches to the first years of Turkish Republic. Ataturk met the needs of The Gagauz and supported them in those years. In this study political statute, ethnic identity, economic situation and the geographical position of Gagauz people have been examined. The Gagauz that had not known well by Turks until the 1990s has been researched in details. Besides it has been mentioned that Gagauz people bridge The Republic of Moldova and Turkey both culturally and commercially as well as building amity between two nations. Keywords: Turkey, The Republic of Moldova, Gagauz Autonomous Region ÖZET Gagavuz Türklerinin büyük çoğunluğu Moldova Cumhuriyeti’nin güneyinde Bucak bölgesinde yaşamaktadır. Gagavuzların konuştuğu dil Türkiye Türkçesine en yakın şivedir. 23 Aralık 1993 yılında özerkliğe kavuşmuştur. Moldova Cumhuriyeti Nüfusunun yüzde 4’ ünü oluşturmaktadır. Balkanlarda küçük topluluk olsa da Türkiye için büyük önem arz etmektedir. Türkiye’nin Gagavuz Türkleri ile olan irtibatı Cumhuriyetin ilk yıllarına dayanmaktadır. Atatürk Gagavuz Türklerine gereken önem ve desteği sağlamıştır.

In the literature Dissenting Democrats on democracy, a divided nation is singled out as probably the most Nation and Democracy in the Republic of Moldova serious threat to democratization. Without a nation in place, it is generally understood that democracy cannot take root. Nevertheless, in a few years Moldova managed to make considerable progress Andreas Johansson on its path towards democracy. A main theme of the dissertation is, therefore, the issue of national division and how it has affected Dissenting Democrats political developments in general and democratization in particular. The dissertation contributes to the discussion of how concepts of nation and democracy are linked in the analysis of transitional states. Democracy, as a platform where different political ideas and ambitions compete, can complicate transitions since it provides the potential for conflict. Democracy, however, also offers the prospect of finding common ground on which to negotiate, and this, in the long run, carries the seed of consolidation for both democracy and nation alike.     Travels in Romania, Moldova and Gagauzia BY ADAM SMITH ALBION TRABZON, Turkey 10 May 1995 SENTIMENTAL JOURNEYS I set off from Istanbul on a circuit of the Black Sea intending to visit the Crimean Tatars, but became so intrigued- re-intrigued, I should say by the Romanian-speaking world that I abandoned myself to it and never even reached Odessa. Of all the Balkan coun- tries, I feel most at home in Romania, and I enjoyed wending my way north through the Turkish and Tatar communities along the Do- brogean littoral. In the Republic of Moldova, I was welcomed by the Gagauz Turks, and traveled their autonomous republic of Gagauzia. It was fun and exciting to be in a country where my Romanian, Rus- sian and Turkish interests coincided. Finally undertaking a senti- mental journey of a different kind I was transported back to the time of Peter the Great and spent Orthodox Easter among the Rus- sian Old Believers at the fork of the Danube Delta. THE MOLDOVAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES To fly from Bucharest to Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, I chose Air Moldova. Even dirt-poor countries consider the prestige of a na- tional carrier a necessity. I was curious how Moldova would adver- tise itself in the air. We were not in the air for a long time. The pas- sengers waited in their seats for half an hour until the pilot arrived. It was 7pro, and as we waited the sun went down. Then we waited in the dark. One man had brought a dog on board, a terrier, that ran up and down the aisle barking.
