The (2014-2015 data) main campus is located in the heart of St. Petersburg, steps away from Peter and Paul’s Fortress. ITMO University is one of the leading higher education institutions in Russia, providing training and research in advanced science, humanities, engineering and technology. The main focus areas are IT, Photonics, Optics, Mechatronics, Robotics, Smart Technologies, Art & Science, and Urban Studies. The University has about 11000 students, 15% of whom are international coming from 83 different countries. ITMO University provides undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate (PhD) programs. ITMO University is ranked 76 in computer science by Times Higher Education, 75 by QS BRICS, 251-300 in computer science & information systems by QS, 301-400 in Engineering & Technology by Times Higher Education. European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) credits are a standard means for comparing the volume of learning based on the defined learning outcomes and their associated workload for higher education across the European Union and other collaborating European countries. For successfully completed studies, ECTS credits are awarded. Language of teaching Courses are taught in English or Russian. Recommended B2 level of Russian (if classes are taught in Russian) or a B2 level of language skills English (if classes are taught in English). Cost of living Cost of the dorms varies from an equivalent of about $60 per month to about $120 per month depending on the occupancy and specifications of the room. Integration ITMO University regularly holds volunteering events with local non-profit organizations activities and charities. One of the most successful projects is the annual “People Need You” competition developed in collaboration with University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and with support from of Committee on social policy of St. Petersburg, National fund of training, Kind City of St. Petersburg fund and charitable society "Nevsky Angel" . This multi-university event brings together student teams that have an idea for a socially important project. As part of the competition, they receive training in project and non- profit management and realize their projects for the betterment of the community.
