    Murder in Montmartre: The Leon Crutcher Affair by Anthony Baldwin with original artwork by Peter Poplaski opening the place on 2nd September 1925 in a blaze of publicity. The group photo was taken at Le Pavillon’s first-anniversary outdoor gala the following season. The hiring of musicians and entertainers was handled by Max-Roger-Louis Lolivrel, one of the project’s directors and former owner of Rector’s Club at 45 Rue des Acacias in Paris, where Syd and Harry Roy’s Crichton Lyricals had cut their Continental teeth in 1923-24. Dance acts and choreography at Le Pavillon were organized by veteran hoofer Harry Pilcer, formerly dance director at Rector’s. Max Lolivrel was even pushy enough to hang Rector’s trademark signboard of two drunken dogs above Le Pavillon’s garden stage. Rector’s itself had been closed since the spring of 1925, when Max had filed for bankruptcy in the Paris courts. However, nobody seemed to care. These were heady days. Leon Allen Crutcher (b. Trenton Falls, NJ, 10 Dec 1902) and drummer George Hill Evans (b. Wilmington, NC, 8 July 1896) had been regulars at Rector’s in Paris since their arrival from New York in 1924. Leon had no particular family background n September 2nd, 1926, almost exactly ninety years in music: his father was a New York postman and his mother ago, a society photographer in the French city of an apartment-house janitress. With his good looks and Biarritz took the remarkable action shot of the Palm OBeach Six reproduced on this edition’s cover page.

Ethnographies of contemporary migrations emphasize the palpable presence of national borders and social boundaries in the everyday life of immigrants. Ethnomusicological literature on migrant and border musics has focused primarily on the role of music in evoking a sense of home and expressing group identity and solidarity in the face of assimilation. In jazz scholarship, the articulation and crossing of genre boundaries has been tied to jazz as a symbol of national cultural identity, both in the U.S and in jazz scenes around the world. While these works cover important aspects of the relationship between nationalism, immigration and music, the role of jazz in facilitating the crossing of national borders and blurring social boundaries between immigrant and native-born musicians in the U.S. has received relatively little attention to date.

    THE HAROLD FLAKSER COLLECTION BY VINCENT H. PELOTE Mr. Pelote is Librarian of the Institute of Jazz Studies, Rutgers University N OCTOBER 20, 1986 the Institute of Jazz Studies (IJS) offi- cially received its single most significant acquisition since coming Ounder the auspices of Rutgers University: the private collection of Harold Flakser. This important addition further enhances the IJS's international reputation as the most comprehensive library for jazz re- search. The IJS1 The Institute of Jazz Studies (IJS), located on the first floor of Bradley Hall at Rutgers-Newark, is the largest jazz archive in the world. It was founded in 1952 by the late Dr. Marshall Stearns, a professor of medieval English literature at Hunter College and author of two essential jazz books.2 In 1966 Rutgers University was chosen as the Institute's perma- nent academic home. The collection, which has since grown considerably, contains over 90,000 sound recordings, more than 4,000 books on jazz and related subjects, and extensive holdings in jazz periodicals from throughout the world. In addition there are also vertical files on individ- ual musicians and topics, a photograph collection, sheet music (including big band arrangements, music scores, etc.) and memorabilia. Some of the latter are on display at IJS. The IJS film collection consists of excerpts from feature films featuring jazz artists (e.g., out-takes from "Last of the Blue Devils") and various shorts and television clips. The IJS is also in the process of increasing its holdings in vidéocassettes on jazz. Jazz Research Until fairly recent times, the bulk of writing and research in the jazz field was done by dedicated amateur scholars.

March 11, 1954 Introduction: Frankie Newton, “master of the mutes”, was one of the greatest trumpets of the swing era with extreme personality and originality. The marginal value of an eventual new discovery of a Frankie solo is greater to this author than of any other trumper in jazz history! The solography below is basically the one printed as Vol. 9 (1978) in my Jazz Solography Series with additional material appearing after the publication, and with related comments given as ‘postscripts’. There are a very few missing items, please help! History: Joined Lloyd W. Scott’s band in Huntington, west Virginia, whilst the band were on their way to Pittsburgh and New York (1926). Played in New York with Lloyd Scott, also worked with Elmer Snowden (summer 1927). With Eugene Kennedy’s band (early 1929), the rejoined Scott’s band (then led by Cecil Scott), was occasionally featured as a vocalist. With Cecil Scott (early 1930), then worked with Chick Webb, Charlie Johnson and Elmer Snowden. Worked briefly with Garland Wilson on radio WEVD (1932), left New York for a while, then worked with Sam Wooding. Recorded with Bessie Smith in 1933, with Charlie Johnson from ca. September 1933 until entering hospital in late 1935. Brief return to Charlie Johnson, then with Teddy Hill from spring 1936 until spring 1937. Complications followed a tonsillectomy (May 1937), worked with John Kirby from July until September 1937, recovered from injured back, played in brief -lived Mezz Mezzrow Disciples of Swing (November 1937).

Played violin and mandolin during early childhood, moved to Washington, D.C., in 1920, was soon co-leading a band with Claude Hopkins, worked for a while in Oliver Blackwell´s Clowns, then to New York City with Sonny thompson´s Band. Worked in the Seminole Syncopators led by pianist Graham Jackson (1925), whilst with this band accompanied vocaliste Virginia Liston. From 1925 until 1929 worked mainly for Ed Smalls (sic!), first as a sideman, then leading own band. With Claude Hopkins (1927), from 1928 specialised on guitar. With Louis Armstrong at the Cocoanut Grove, New York, then briefly with Bubber Miley´s Mileage Makers (September 1930). With Milton Senior´s Band in Toledo, Ohio (1931), working with Art Tatum, then with Tatum in group accompanying Adelaide hall. Joined Russell Wooding´s Band at Connie´s Inn, worked briefly with Fats Waller and Sam Wooding, then with Fletcher Henderson from early 1933 until summer of 1934. Again, worked as accompanist for Adelaide Hall, then led own small band in New York at the Famous Door and Adrian´s Tap Room (1935). Accompanist for the vocal group The Mills Brothers from 1936 until 1938 (including tour of Europe 1936), during this period also worked with Mezz Mezzrow´s Disciples of Swing (November 1937) and in guitar-duo with Teddy Bunn. With Stuff Smith from 1938 until November 1939, then led own small group, briefly with Sidney Bechet Quartet (March – April 1940), then again led own band until Army service in World War II.

He then moved to Atlantic City, switched to piano as his main instrument and, probably from early in 1919, led his own bands in that city. Trombonist Jimmy Harrison worked with him there around this time, and trumpeter Charlie Gaines about a year later. In October 1925, Johnson arrived in New York to open at Small´s Paradise, where he led the resident group until he gave up full time bandleading in 1938. It was common for the Johnson band to play a summer season in Atlantic City when Small´s closed for a few months.
