Paul Motian Composition Book Published !All of iconic jazz drummer’s music is now available to the public ! The Compositions of Paul Motian Volume 2 • 1990-2011 was released on Jan- uary 30, 2018. Motian’s niece, Cynthia McGuirl is the publisher. Motian never published his written music during his lifetime but with this book, all of his compositions are now in print. ! Jazz drummer Paul Motian (1931–2011) composed music that is uniquely suited to im- provisation. Motian began playing on the New York jazz scene in the late 1950s and was a part of many groundbreaking groups, including ones led by Bill Evans and Keith Jar- rett. He began leading his own bands simultaneously with writing his own music. Col- lected from his papers and presented in his own handwriting, the tunes in Volumes 1 and 2 are a complete collection, from when he first started composing in 1973 until his death in 2011. ! Cynthia McGuirl is also the caretaker of Motian’s archive. While she was organizing his copious composition notebooks, she decided to make his written music available to any musician who wanted it. With the help of Motian bandmates Steve Cardenas, Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano, McGuirl put together all of Motian’s lead sheets. Besides recorded tunes, the collection includes 21 unreleased songs. All felt it was important that the mu- sic appear in Motian’s own handwriting. The way he wrote out the music was deliberate, and conveys nuances which would be lost with a mechanized rendering. ! In the 1950s and 60s, Motian played with a staggering number of musicians, including Lennie Tristano, Mose Allison, Oscar Pettiford, Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Paul Bley, Lee Konitz, Charles Lloyd and Keith Jarrett. Encouraged by Jarrett, who sold him his old ! ! piano, Paul began composing his own music in the early 1970s. Paul’s first album as a bandleader, Conception Vessel, was released in 1972 and marked the start of a 39-year relationship with the German label ECM. 1984’s It Should’ve Happened a Long Time Ago was Motian’s first record to feature his trio with tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano and guitarist Bill Frisell—a musical partnership that lasted for the rest of Motian’s life. His other bands included the Electric Bebop Band, Paul Motian Band and Trio 2000. He toured internationally with his own bands as well as with other jazz leaders such as Charlie Haden and Gary Peacock. During the last 10 years of his life, Motian held court almost exclusively at the Village Vanguard in New York City. ! In 2014, McGuirl began her podcast Uncle Paul’s Jazz Closet to share the music and writings of Motian. Over 100 episodes chronicling his music and influences are available for listening at www.paulmotianarchive.com. ! The songbooks are available directly from Cynthia McGuirl.
