-62- THE INDIVIDUALISM OF ORWELL'S THINKING Cleusa Vieira de Aguiar - UFMG - The polarisation between individual and social entrironment, from the viowpoint of an assertivo individualism, is one of the commonplaces of Orwell criticism. In its own terms it appears as a valuable and 'rugged individualism' , but more criticaily it can be seen as a limiting 'bourgeois indivi duali sm . Caudwell describes the essentially illusory nature of this mode of thought and the associated conception of freedom: "The bourgeois believes that liberty consists in absence of social organiaation; that liberty is a negative quality, a deprivation of existing obstacles to it; and not a positive quality, the reward of endeavour and wisdom. This belief is itself the result of bourgeois social .-o lations. As a result of it, the bourgeois intellectual is unconscious of the causaiity that makes his consciousness what it is... He refuses to see that his own limited liberty; the captivity of the worker, and ali the contradictions of developing bourgeois relations — pacifism, fascism, war, hate, cruclty, ... are bound in one net of causality, that each is influenced by each, and that thereForo it is fallacious to suppose a simple effort of the will of the free man, without knowledge of the -63- causes, will banish fascism, war and slumps ... we have shown that the individual is never free. He can only attain frcedom by social cooperation ... If, therefore, he wi alies to stop poverty, war, and misery, he must do it, not by passive resistance, but by using social relations. But in ordcr to use social relations he must understand them." This account both reminds us of Orwell's anarchist sympathies 4 and explains how in a particular historical situation an assertive individualism turns into a deterministic view of social forces and a pessimistic attitude to the possibility of social change. -

POLITICAL REPORTING IN THE AGE OF INFOTAINMENT Melissa Oribhabor Jennifer Rowe, Committee Chair August 2014 Introduction The effects of infotainment have been felt by the news industry since politicians started appearing on talK shows and comedy shows, hoping to humanize themselves to the voting public. One of the earliest examples was in 1968 when presidential candidate Richard Nixon appeared on “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In” (Xenos 198). Even earlier than that, John F. Kennedy appeared on the “The Tonight Show” with Jack Paar in 1960. But with the 24-hour news cycle and the Internet drawing the public away from traditional forms of news, infotainment has become even more prevalent during the past 30 years. Infotainment can be seen easily on television, with programs such as “The Daily Show” and CNN’s “RidicuList” with Anderson Cooper; however, infotainment in terms of print journalism has not been studied as in- depth. This research not only looks at infotainment in print journalism but more specifically how it affects political journalists. Literature Review Moy, Xenos and Hess in their 2005 article “Communication and Citizenship: Mapping the Political Effects of Infotainment” define infotainment as the convergence of news and entertainment. The paper states that in recent years news programs started developing more elements of entertainment, and entertainment programs started to disseminate the news. The term “infotainment” is largely used in reference to entertainment programs that have elements of news (Moy et. al. 2005, 113). “Soft news” and “infotainment” are often used interchangeably in research on this topic. Soft news includes sensationalized stories, human-interest stories, and stories that focus more on entertainment over serious hard news content (Jebril et. -

Ward Aug. 9, 2013 Our inventions are wont to be pretty toys, which distract our attention from serious things. They are but improved means to an unimproved end. Henry David Thoreau When we do journalism, media ethics is the responsible use of the freedom to publish. When we reflect on our work, media ethics is normative interpretation of practice. Nor- mative interpretation starts with a social practice such as law or journalism, and around which there is usually some agreement on who is a practitioner and on clear examples of the practice. Interpretation articulates the purpose of the practice by considering it “in its best light.”1 Given this purpose, it says what the practice requires in terms of standards. For example, I evaluate journalism according to two tiers of criteria. The first tier identifies “base conditions” for the building of a robust press. The base conditions include freedom of expression, independence of newsrooms, and sufficient economic stability. These conditions must be realized to some extent before we can dream of other things. The second tier consists of “democratic” criteria. It says that once the freedom to publish is established, media should promote egalitarian, participatory democracy. I stress citizen participation in all aspects of media, but I also favor certain types of participation. I look for media spaces that allow reasoned dialogue across differences – what I call dialogic journalism. -

It is concluded that the positivism of North American sociology of literature ignores the historical specificity of contemporary literary forms. Part of the explanation for the perspective of Kenneth Burke and Hugh Duncan is shown to derive from partial elements of the epistemology of the Classical Greeks and Hegelianism. Similarly Luk;csr philosophy of literary criticism are shown to be modifications on a rigidly Marxist econoniic determinism as well as Hegelian idealism. ~ukgcs'concept of literary realism -- in contemporary society as those forms of the novel which portray the specific problems of individuals and classes and the resolution of social contradictions within the "totality of the movement of historyn-- is examined in relation to the pracesses of capitalist development in Europe. It is zrgued that literature provides more than nextensions of social realityv, as Burke and Duncan imply. -
