Hood (OR HWY 35) Corridor. The Hood River-Mt. Hood Corridor Plan is a long-range (20-year) program for managing all transportation modes within the Oregon Highway 35 corridor from the 1-84 junction to the US 26 junction (see Corridor Map). The first phase of that process has resulted in the attached Interim Com'dor Stvategy. The Interim Corridor Strategy is a critical element of the Hood River- Mt. Hood Corridor Plan. The Corridor Strategy will guide development of the Corridor Plan and Refinement Plans for specific areas and issues within the corridor. Simultaneous with preparation of the Corridor Plan, Transportation System Plans (TSPs) are being prepared for the cities of Hood River and Cascade Locks and for Hood River County.     Background Brief on … Freight and September 2012 Passenger Inside this Brief Rail • History History Oregon’s first north-south rail line required two decades • to complete, beginning at Portland in 1869. Track Today’s Freight reached Salem in 1870 and Roseburg in 1872, but did System not extend to Ashland until 1884. Federal land grants financed this early track building. Construction • Funding continued over the Siskiyou Mountains into California Improvements and, by 1887, a continuous route between San Francisco and Portland was completed. Meanwhile, in 1883, completion of a railroad along the Columbia River gave • Rail Funding Task Oregon a transcontinental connection across the northern Force tier states. Late in 1884, completion of a line from Umatilla over the Blue Mountains established a second transcontinental link through Idaho, Wyoming, and • Today’s Passenger Nebraska. Rail mileage in Oregon peaked in the 1930s at System nearly 4,350 miles.
