  • Tahiti: Geochemical Evolution of a French Polynesian Volcano
JOURNAL OF GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH, VOL. 99, NO. B12, PAGES 24,341-24,357, DECEMBER 10, 1994 Tahiti: Geochemical evolution of a French Polynesian volcano Robert A. Duncan and Martin R. Fisk Collegeof Oceanicand AtmosphericSciences, Oregon State University, Corvallis William M. White Departmentof GeologicalSciences, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York Roger L. Nielsen Collegeof Oceanicand Atmospheric Sciences, Oregon State University, Corvallis Abstract. The island of Tahiti, the largestin French Polynesia, comprises two major volcanoes alignedNW-SE, parallelwith the generaltrend of the SocietyIslands hotspot track. Rocksfrom this volcanicsystem are basaltstransitional to tholeiites, alkali basalts, basanites, picrites, and evolvedlavas. Through K-Ar radiometricdating we haveestablished the ageof volcanicactivity. The oldestlavas (--1.7 Ma) crop out in deeplyeroded valleys in the centerof the NW volcano (Tahiti Nui), while the main exposedshield phase erupted between 1.3 and 0.6 Ma, and a late- stage,valley-filling phase occurred between 0.7 and0.3 Ma. The SW volcano(Tahiti Iti) was active between0.9 and 0.3 Ma. There is a clear changein the compositionof lavas throughtime. The earliestlavas are moderatelyhigh SiO2,evolved basalts (Mg number(Mg# = Mg/Mg+Fe2+) 42-49), probablyderived from parentalliquids of compositiontransitional between those of tholeiitesand alkali basalts. The main shieldlavas are predominantlymore primitive olivine and clinopyroxene-phyricalkali basalts(Mg# 60-64), while the latervalley-filling lavas are basanitic (Mg# 64-68) andcommonly contain peridotitic xenoliths (olivine+orthopyroxene+ clinopyroxene+spinel). Isotopic compositions also change systematically with time to more depletedsignatures. Rare earthelement patterns and incompatible element ratios, however, show no systematicvariation with time.We focusedon a particularlywell exposedsequence of shield- buildinglavas in the PunaruuValley, on the westernside of Tahiti Nui.

In this context of rapid change, effective site-based management of coral reef Conflict fisheries necessitates flexible environmental governance that is closely attuned to the needs of multiple stake- Devolution holders who depend on the fishery for income, food, and cultural identity. As such, many practitioners and Biodiversity conservation scholars call for adaptive co-management of coral reef fisheries where local resource users play a primary role in Adaptive management environmental governance with the support of flexible institutions that operate across organizational scales. This Pacific article describes the history and evaluates the current status of marine governance in Moorea, French Polynesia. Established in 2004, the management framework is under revision because it has failed to meet its ecological objectives and has generated discontent among many stakeholders.

It was drawn by Tupaia, an arioi priest, chiefly advisor and master navigator from Ra‘iateā in the Leeward Society Islands in collaboration with various members of the crew of James Cook’s Endeavour, in two distinct moments of mapmaking and three draft stages between August 1769 and February 1770. To this day, the identity of many islands on the chart, and the logic of their arrangement have posed a riddle to researchers. Drawing in part on archival material hitherto overlooked, in this long essay we propose a new understanding of the chart’s cartographic logic, offer a detailed reconstruction of its genesis, and thus for the first time present a comprehensive reading of Tupaia’s Map.

VPM Yachtcharter - French Polynesia Yacht - charter French Polynesia In the endless width of the blue Pacific Ocean, between the islands of Hawaii and Australia, some of the most beautiful islands and deserted beaches that the planet earth still has to offer can be found: French Polynesia. This is an archipelago whose area is bigger than Europe and which includes 115 islands with melodious names. The islands are located in the trade wind zone. The trade wind is blowing from May till September from the south-east with 3 to 4 Beaufort and is called Maraamu by the indigenous people. Of course, sometimes you may find a wind force of 6 or 7. During this time you can spend dream holidays on board of a yacht, explore the islands and discover the under water world while you are snorkeling in the lagoon. Only between November and the end of March there can occur tropical depressions. South-sea rhythms, the smell of Tiare Tahit, the national flower and dream beaches are waiting for you. The ideal starting place for your trip is Raiatea. But besides our base in Raiatea we also offer charter yachts from Moorea and Tahiti so that you can book a one way trip and sail from one port to the next. • Urbanization Determines the Abundance of Disease Vector Mosquitoes in Moorea, French Polynesia By: Jason Mark B
Urbanization determines the abundance of disease vector mosquitoes in Moorea, French Polynesia By: Jason Mark B. Soriano; Research Sponsor (PI): Dr. Brent Mishler ABSTRACT Mosquitoes are important disease vectors of infectious diseases. The effect of anthropogenic habitat modification is es- sential to the abundance and dissemination of mosquitoes. However, little is known about anthropogenic habitat modification’s effect in the context of remote, oceanic, and tropical islands. This study assessed the impact that habitat modification, specifically urbanization, had on different mosquito species on the island of Moorea, French Polynesia. We measured the abundance of three mosquito species across a gradient characterized by the quantity of built environment and human population density. This urbanization gradient was represented by four low-elevation sites along the coasts of Opunohu Bay and Cook’s Bay. A cluster of four different mosquito traps were rotated between these sites in 24-hour intervals. A total of 874 individual mosquitoes were collected and Aedes aegypti and Culex quinq- uefasciatus were found to be more abundant in urban areas. Aedes polynesiensis was found to be more abundant in forested areas. When comparing abundance between the rainy and dry season, Aedes aegypti numbers were five times greater during the rainy season. Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes polynesiensis numbers were less than they were in the dry season. These findings suggest that the effects of urbanization were species-specific and dependent on a nexus of socioecological factors, with significant correlations between mosquito abundance, urbanization, and seasonal climate conditions. The study also showed that different sampling methods designed to capture flying adult mosquitoes differed in both efficacy and selectivity, suggesting that trapping systems must be considered in establishing a sound assessment of mosquito community composition.
