An additional seven which may occur are included. Keys to subfamilies, genera and species are given. Two subfamilies and twenty-five genera are represented. A discussion of specific identification, habitat, and distribution is given where possible. The Laphria canis complex, index complex, and aeatus complex are discussed. One new species, Laphria calvescenta is described. Laphria disparella has been raised from synonymy. Machimus virginicus was removed from Asilus sensu-latu and placed in the genus Machimus. -

Wing-Based Communication in Carboniferous Insects

Titanoptera, an ‘orthopteroid’ Permian-Triassic order, is one of the few candidates for Paleozoic intersex calling interactions: some specimens had highly specialized broadened zones on the forewings, which are currently considered—despite inconclusive evidence—as ‘resonators’ of a stridulatory apparatus. Here we argue that the stridulatory 1234567890():,; apparatus hypothesis is unlikely because the Titanoptera lack a stridulatory file on their bodies, legs or wings. Instead, comparing these broadened zones with similar structures in extant locusts, flies, and fossil damselflies, we find evidence that the Titanoptera used their wings to produce flashes of light and/or crepitated sounds. Moreover, we describe the first Carboniferous (~310 Mya) Titanoptera, which exhibits such specialized zones, thus corre- sponding to the oldest record of wing communication in insects. Three species, O. corolla sp. nov., O. huoae sp. nov., O. jianfenglingensis sp. nov., are described as new to science. A key to the species, illustrations of the adults and male genitalia are provided. Key words Diptera, Asilidae, Ommatius, new species, Hainan. 1 Introduction The genus Ommatius Wiedemann, 1821, is the biggest group of subfamily Ommatiinae and distributed worldwide (Geller-Grimm, 2003/2004). The species of Ommatius are small to large sized, sharing the pectinate, bristly style of the third antennal segment with other genera of Ommatiinae, separated from each other by the combined characters of face bristles, antenna, legs and abdomen. The genus is divided into two subgenera, Ommatius Wiedemann, 1821 and Metommatius Hull, 1962. The nominated subgenus includes 307 species. The subgenus Metommatius Hull,1962, is revised by Scarbrough and Marascia (2000) and includes four species described from Africa. The subgenus Pygommatius is erected by Scarbrough and Marascia (2003), and elevated as genus by Scarbrough and Hill (2005). Including the 3 species reported here, 23 species are known from China (Becker, 1925; Wulp, 1872, 1899; Wiedemann, 1824; de Meijere, 1914; Schiner, 1868; Hua, 1985), and also described from the Oriental part. -

Wilcox (dec.). This draft, a preliminary version of a complete catalog for Nearctic Asilidae, contains a classification and listing of all described robber fly species found in the Nearctic Region (United States, Canada and northern Mexico). Included also are references to original descriptions and relevant taxonomic decisions, ' plus type locality and distribution for each Nearctic species. Not present here--but planned for the final version--are a bibliography for all references; an index to included taxa; general references to useful keys andlor revisionary studies for individual genera (or tribes or subfamilies); full introductory and explanatory information; and acknowledgements of contributors and reviewers. e The classification used is that published by Artigas & Papavero (1988 to present)--with a few minor exceptions. Although their classification scheme is still being developed (particularly with regard to the Asilinae s.l.), it is adopted here for two reasons: to provide a more uniform system of classification for New World Asilidae; and because it seems to be a distinct improvement over previous systems (for example, the classification used by Martin & Wilcox [I965; in Stone, et. al., "A Catalog of the Diptera-of America North of Mexico"]). It is obvious to many systematists that all available classifications of Asilidae are flawed (principally by general lack of rigorous phylogenetic analysis); and that it is to be expected that many changes will be made as a result of future studies. -
