Le succès de cette approche est régulièrement confirmé par la création de nouveaux Parcs naturels régionaux (un nouveau Parc tous les 14 mois en moyenne), à l’initiative d’élus locaux qui souhaitent le meilleur pour les habitants : un environnement sain où exercer durablement son métier. Depuis plus de cinquante ans, les scientifiques, mais aussi de plus en plus souvent, les citoyens, s’intéressent à la nature qui les entoure. Ils comptent les oiseaux, évaluent l’abondance des poissons, cartographient les milieux naturels... La somme de connaissances ainsi accumulée est déjà colossale, sa diffusion et son assimilation étant favorisées par les réseaux électroniques… Ces nouveaux savoirs nous enseignent que les écosystèmes évoluent en permanence, certaines espèces ayant malheureusement disparu localement (anguille, busards…), quand d’autres regagnent du terrain ou voient leurs populations s’accroître. Ils nous guident également vers de nouvelles approches pour préserver les espèces, en particulier celle de prendre soin de réseaux d’espaces naturels (les trames), et non plus des seules réserves remarquables. Le Parc naturel régional de Millevaches en Limousin s’inscrit pleinement dans cette tendance. Chaque année, il investit dans l’amélioration des connaissances, ce qui l’aide à établir des programmes d’actions permettant de concilier vie économique et préservation du patrimoine.
