He took up the organ in 1995, studying initially with Sean Tucker at Wimborne Minster. From April 2000 he studied with Alan Harwood, and in January 2003 achieved the Associateship of the Royal College of Organists (ARCO) with the highest marks in the organ playing section for candidates less than 19 years of age. He has also studied with Sarah Baldock and Thomas Trotter. Sam has held organ scholar posts at St. Peter’s Church, Bournemouth (2001-2004, generously supported by the Michael James Music Trust), Salisbury Cathedral (2004-2005) and Jesus College, Cambridge (2005-2008). He returned to St. Peter’s Church as Assistant Organist in January 2009 and was appointed Director of Music in September 2011. He teaches piano and jazz piano at Bryanston and Talbot Heath Schools. Sam also plays keyboards for alternative rock band Oposium, has appeared as soloist for performances of Rachmaninov’s Second and Third Piano Concerti and his “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini”, Gershwin’s "Rhapsody in Blue" and Constant Lambert's "Rio Grande”, and spent two years conducting Jesus College Orchestra. His "Requiem" (written in memory of Alan Harwood) was performed as part of the 2006 Southern Cathedrals Festival at Salisbury Cathedral; his "Wimborne Mass", commissioned by the Friends of Wimborne Minster, was premiered in May 2010; and his latest piece, “An Evening Cantata”, was premiered in March 2013 at the Minster, featuring the Minster Choir and choirs from Allenbourn and St. Michael’s Middle Schools. He has a particular interest – and considerable skill – in the art of improvisation, and has studied with David Briggs at Gloucester Cathedral, perhaps the foremost exponent in this field. In addition to our customary morning services at the Priory (11.00) and St George’s (10.00), we shall mark this important festival by holding a Eucharist for Ascension Day at 7.00pm that evening in the Priory. The Ascension appears in the list of Jesus’ life events recorded in the Apostles' Creed – conception, birth, crucifixion, death, resurrection, ascension and, the only one yet to happen, when Jesus shall “come again to judge the living and the dead”. Ascension is the sign that Jesus has been vindicated as our Saviour and now reigns as Lord; that "at the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord" (Phil 2.10). Ascension is the confirmation that the salvation Jesus achieved on the cross and released through the resurrection means that humanity has been redeemed and is now taken up into heaven with Christ. Ascension is the sign that, in Christ, we have direct access to God our Father, to worship him in all we are and in all we do; for Christ has restored the fellowship of heaven and earth. * * * * * As every year since 2016, Thy Kingdom Come begins on Ascension Day and continues until Pentecost, on May 23rd.

SECRETARY Since the last Newsletter we have held some memorable meetings of which the visit, although it was a long and tiring day, to Buckfast Abbey must rank among the best we have had. Our visit took place on Thursday 16th May 2019 when some sixteen members assembled in the afternoon sunshine outside the Abbey to receive a very warm welcome from David Davies, the Abbey Organist. He gave us an introduction to the acquisition and building of the organ before we entered the Abbey. The new organ in the Abbey was built by the Italian firm of Ruffatti in 2017 and opened in April 2018. It has an elaborate specification of some 81 stops spread over 4 manuals and pedals. It is, in effect, two organs with a large west-end division and a second extensive division in the Choir. There is a full account of this organ in the Organist’s Review for March 2018 and on the Abbey website. After the demonstration we were invited to play. Our numbers were such that it was possible for everyone to take the opportunity. David was on hand to assist with registration on this complex instrument as the console resembled the flight deck of an airliner. Members had been asked to prepare their pieces before-hand and this worked well with David commenting on the excellent choice of pieces members had chosen to suit the organ. We are most grateful to David Davies for making us so welcome and help throughout the afternoon.

The Role of Early Medieval Saints in English Church Dedications beyond the Conquest and the Reformation Michael Hicks Every English church is dedicated to some aspect of the godhead or to a patron saint, often commemorated in the place names, such as St Albans in Hertford- shire, Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, and St Osyth in Essex. Many of the earliest missionaries and those princesses who founded nunneries have been reviewed by Barbara Yorke in work which has done much to reveal the early medieval legacy of the landscape of Britain.1 The dedications of parish churches are among the most obvious elements of that legacy but they also reveal much of the perceptions of that legacy in the later Middle Ages. Although this paper focuses on Anglo-Saxon dedications before the Nor- man Conquest, the discussion also includes native British saints or Celtic dat- ing before the arrival of the Anglo-Saxons, some of later date, Anglo-Saxon saints who operated within England and abroad (e.g. St Boniface), universal and Roman saints venerated within England, and some others, notably the 11th- and 12th-century Vikings King Olaf Haraldsson and Earl Magnus. This pa- per considers these early contributions to the pool of dedications current in today’s churches and how and why the dedications have multiplied and then were curtailed in the millennium since the Norman Conquest. 7. Analysis and Discussion 7.1. Introduction This study has focussed on how historical imagery (landscape paintings, drawings, prints, postcards and old photographs) can be used as evidential proof of the historic character of the Stour catchment in Dorset, both in terms of heritage features such as buildings but also the landscape as heritage in its own right. The use of imagery provides a novel way of illustrating, often in full colour, river landscapes through time, and allows the evaluation of heritage benefits in an immediately accessible format for a wide range of river stakeholders. This study has sought to demonstrate the value of artworks and other historical imagery as a competent and supportive tool for heritage evaluation and management in such water environments. This study supports the work of Fjordr Limited, which is preparing a wider study of ‘Historic watercourses – developing a method for identifying the historic character of watercourses, the River Stour, Dorset’ (HB7244). The project concept for this particular study developed from a previous study supported by Historic England ‘CHeRISH’ (Coastal Heritage Risk – Imagery in Support of Heritage Planning and Management in South-West England) (7145), which can be viewed at http://cherish.maritimearchaeologytrust.org/. The development of the CHeRISH project, which examined coastal heritage risk in south-west England, and this new study of the River Stour relies upon the identification and assessment of a sufficient number of images being available in order to evaluate the contribution that historical imagery can provide. Fortunately, a large number of suitable images have been identified with the assistance of museums and art galleries in Dorset, together with the London auction houses and image libraries.
