Gwen moved to approve the minutes and seconded by Joanne. OLD BUSINESS - UPDATES: A. Planting Annuals Town Center o The planting that took place on Friday, May 21 was a success. BBC members arrived at 8am and the volunteers at 9am. With the help of the volunteers planting was completed by 10am. Volunteers included Libby Merrow, Mary Briggs, Angelique Croasdale, and Dani Morander. o Sharon, Daria & Eva stayed later for clean-up and watering. Pool and Police Department o Planting is scheduled for Friday May 28 and/or Saturday May 29. There is rain in the forecast for the weekend so we will need to be flexible on the planting date depending on the weather conditions. Gwen & Henriette have many volunteers available for Saturday. They will check the volunteers’ availability for Friday. Mary Hill Green and McMahon Library o The planting date has not yet been finalized. It is tentatively scheduled for Thursday May 27 in the afternoon. Diana Darlington has expressed an interest in volunteering. Gwen or Sharon will contact her with some dates. Town Hall – Hanging Geranium Baskets o The geraniums are all in flower and are scheduled to be hung up on May 27. Eva will be responsible for maintenance. Henriette will be responsible for the Little Free Library Planter on site at Town Hall. Electronic Sign- planted by Sharon and Eva with Echinacea powwow donated by Jonathan Thiesse left over from the Filley Pond Project. Prosser Library o The planting has been done by Tatiana. Town Center – corner of Park Ave. and Bloomfield Ave. o The ash tree in this location has been taken down. There was discussion of planting zinnias and cannas in that location. However, the area has filled in with grass and that project will not happen. B. Volunteer Lists & Thank You Notes Gwen & Henriette will send thank-you notes to the volunteers who participated in the Town Center planting. C. Notable Landscape Awards subcommittee update - Eva The nomination period starts on June 1 and ends August 2. Eva is working with the Town Manager’s office to announce on the Town website the launch of the nomination period. In addition, the nomination form and the eligibility & criteria info that is posted on the BBC’s page needs to be updated for 2021. Sharon will post on Instagram that the nomination period has begun along with the nomination form. Eva will work with Sharon to write an article promoting the awards for the Town Messenger. Copies of the nomination form will be available in the Town Hall lobby. Other suggestions for community outreach include sending emails from Leisure Services and Senior Center, reaching out to Duncaster and Seabury, and posting on the various Bloomfield related Facebook pages. We are targeting having 2 judges this year. Suggestions for judges include Nancy Brennick (CT Horticultural Society), Richard Zito (Green Machine) and a prior year award winner. Sharon and Eva will contact potential judges. D. Tree Signage update - Eva Eva and Daria continue to work on this. Target date for completion is early August. E. BBC Instagram update - Sharon The BBC page now has 91 followers. Sharon asked the BBC’s members to encourage their friends to be followers. F. Farmington River Park update – Sharon A guided hike led by Kevin Gough and Paula Jones is scheduled for CT Trails Day June 5. The walk will take the hikers to the sand dunes created by Glacial Lake Hitchcock. Registration is required and can be done on the Wintonbury Land Trust website. Sharon has ordered a Hackberry tree that will be funded from the Hartford Audubon Society grant. DPW will pick up. G. Arbor Day Tree Planting DPW checks the water bags and waters weekly. All the planted trees are doing well with the exception of one American Hornbeam (named “Hector” by those involved in its planting). It appears that the leader is dead. Sharon will pursue getting a replacement tree from the nursery. H. Mother’s Day Guided ID Walk The walk, led by Lucy Eyre, Zellene Sandler and Kevin Wilcox, was a success. There were 25 people of various ages in attendance. The walkers were impressed by the park and some of the walkers had not previously known about the park. I. Tree Care & Pruning Workshop (May 22) There was a change in venue and the workshop took place at the McMahon Library. 8 people registered for the workshop, unfortunately, there were 4 no- shows. John Kehoe licensed arborist explained and showed tools and pruning techniques. Participants did some hands on pruning on site. NEW BUSINESS: A. Library Building Committee presentation by Greg Davis and Marc Weisman Greg Davis and Marc Weisman presented the details of the preliminary plans for a new Prosser Library in town center and the renovation and expansion of the McMahon Library. They were seeking feedback from the BBC on these current plans. The Library Building Committee will be making another presentation on June 14 at Town Council which will include enhanced plans and renderings. There was mention that one of the oak trees should come down because “the architect felt it would hide the building” but an arborist had been called in to look at the tree and evaluate first. If a referendum is approved for November, there will be hopefully a landscape architect on board. They will be in contact with us at that point for landscape feedback. Feedback from the BBC included: o McMahon Library – suggestion to enhance the outside space to make it more inviting and to soften the landscape. General favorable opinion on the library’s exterior. o Prosser Public Library - . Concern that there is not appropriate outdoor space or a connection to the Library. Landscaping is minimal. The exterior modern architecture does not fit in with the New England aesthetic of the Town Center. The main entrance faces onto Mountain Avenue South and not onto Town Green – loses a connection with the Town Center and the town Green. It has no sense of place. Connection to the Parking Lot where the former Riley Lumber is offers no winter protection or aesthetic, looks like a handicap ramp. The building materials of a white building stand out with no connection to the surrounding buildings. Using the Congregation Church as a connection to color doesn’t seem to work. At this point of design discussion, no attention from the committee was given to the interior of the building being in the beginning stages. B. Report from DPW – Dan Carter DPW’s focus has been clean-up at the schools and on their grounds. The High School’s graduation is to take place on the courtyard., working on storm drainage on the roads, and the spring street sweeping. Maintenance in being done at the athletic fields. Road paving continues. The elm tree located in town center on Bloomfield Ave. was cut down recently. A white oak is planned as a replacement. It will be planted about 10-15 feet from the current location. Work at Farmington River Park is expected in 2 weeks. C. Discussion of maintenance of planting areas for 2021 Mary Briggs has volunteered to maintain the plantings at the Police Department. Approximately 40 Echinacea plants have been offered to the BBC from Jonathan Thiesse. They were left over from the Filley Park project. These will be planted at the town center electronic sign, town pool and Mary Hill Green. The BBC plans on some plantings for the Farmington River Park. Probably to take place in the autumn. PUBLIC COMMENTS: None CALENDAR: Next Meeting scheduled for Tuesday June 22, 2021 5:30 pm via Zoom ADJOURNMENT: Eva moved to adjourn and was seconded by Henriette. .

  • Strangers No More: “When Harry Met [Dante]…”
Kate Dowling Bryn Mawr School, Baltimore, MD Dante Senior Elective at Gilman School Strangers No More: “When Harry Met [Dante]…” If Dante were to listen to “Stranger with the Melody” at this point on his journey, I think he would be able to relate it a lot to his sense of moving into a different part of his life. Right now, Dante is overcome with emotion, as he has lost Vergil but also been reunited with Beatrice and made it to Paradise. The stranger in the poem reminds me a lot of Vergil, since at the beginning of the song his presence seems almost godlike. When the anonymous voice comes through the walls to Harry, it seems like it is not even attached to a real person; instead, this man appeared just for Harry, as if he was meant to hear his song. Just like this stranger, Vergil appears to Dante and seems almighty. Through Inferno he knows everything and can tell Dante exactly what to do. On Mount Purgatory, Vergil is more unsure, but he still manages to get Dante to the top successfully. Vergil cannot stay with Dante forever, though, and soon we see how Vergil is limited by his Paganism and restricted to his place in Limbo. Just like Vergil, this unknown singer is limited, in this case by his own emotions. The singer can only repeat the same words over and over again, and he seems lost because he can never move on from them. He never will be able to either, because he says that only his girl can tell him the words, while he can just play the music.

  • Madonna: Like a Crone
ROCK ON: WOMEN, AGEING AND POPULAR MUSIC MADONNA: LIKE A CRONE Reaching fifty in 2008 was a watershed year not just for Madonna, but also for her millions of fans. She is a vital figure for women across generations: through her performances she has popularised feminist politics and debate, and promoted a message of sexual empowerment. Much of her career has hinged on this concept of self-liberation and sexual expressiveness. As a young star she was powerfully seductive - one of the first female performers in the pop mainstream to capitalise on video as a marketing tool, and to make that nexus between sex, pop and commerce so explicit. She also challenged notions of the male/female gaze with her book Sex, and videos like 'Justify My Love'. Much of her allure was centred around her visual image, and her ability to combine an inclusive sexuality with compelling costume changes and personae. Female stars in her wake, from Britney Spears to Lady Gaga, have been clearly influenced by her ideas on performance and sexuality However, becoming a mature woman and a mother has presented her with a dilemma. She is fiercely competitive and it is a matter of personal pride to 'stay on top' in the singles market. But in having to compete with younger women, she is subject to the same pressures to look young, slim and beautiful. As a result, she has to continually sculpt and resculpt her body through rigorous workouts and diet regimes. The sculpted body first emerged when she shed the voluptuous 'Toy Boy' look of her early career for her 'Open Your Heart' video.

  • Madonna's Postmodern Revolution
Journal of Literature and Art Studies, January 2021, Vol. 11, No. 1, 26-32 doi: 10.17265/2159-5836/2021.01.004 D DAVID PUBLISHING The Rebel Madame: Madonna’s Postmodern Revolution Diego Santos Vieira de Jesus ESPM-Rio, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil The aim is to examine Madonna’s revolution regarding gender, sexuality, politics, and religion with the focus on her songs, videos, and live performances. The main argument indicates that Madonna has used postmodern strategies of representation to challenge the foundational truths of sex and gender, promote gender deconstruction and sexual multiplicity, create political sites of resistance, question the Catholic dissociation between the physical and the divine, and bring visual and musical influences from multiple cultures and marginalized identities. Keywords: Madonna, postmodernism, pop culture, sex, gender, sexuality, politics, religion, spirituality Introduction Madonna is not only the world’s highest earning female entertainer, but a pop culture icon. Her career is based on an overall direction that incorporates vision, customer and industry insight, leveraging competences and weaknesses, consistent implementation, and a drive towards continuous renewal. She constructed herself often rewriting her past, organized her own cult borrowing from multiple subaltern subcultures, and targeted different audiences. As a postmodern icon, Madonna also reflects social contradictions and attitudes toward sexuality and religion and addresses the complexities of race and gender. Her use of multiple media—music, concert tours, films, and videos—shows how images and symbols associated with multiracial, LGBT, and feminist groups were inserted into the mainstream. She gave voice to political interventions in mass popular culture, although many critics argue that subaltern voices were co-opted to provide maximum profit.

  • THE COLLECTED POEMS of HENRIK IBSEN Translated by John Northam
1 THE COLLECTED POEMS OF HENRIK IBSEN Translated by John Northam 2 PREFACE With the exception of a relatively small number of pieces, Ibsen’s copious output as a poet has been little regarded, even in Norway. The English-reading public has been denied access to the whole corpus. That is regrettable, because in it can be traced interesting developments, in style, material and ideas related to the later prose works, and there are several poems, witty, moving, thought provoking, that are attractive in their own right. The earliest poems, written in Grimstad, where Ibsen worked as an assistant to the local apothecary, are what one would expect of a novice. Resignation, Doubt and Hope, Moonlight Voyage on the Sea are, as their titles suggest, exercises in the conventional, introverted melancholy of the unrecognised young poet. Moonlight Mood, To the Star express a yearning for the typically ethereal, unattainable beloved. In The Giant Oak and To Hungary Ibsen exhorts Norway and Hungary to resist the actual and immediate threat of Prussian aggression, but does so in the entirely conventional imagery of the heroic Viking past. From early on, however, signs begin to appear of a more personal and immediate engagement with real life. There is, for instance, a telling juxtaposition of two poems, each of them inspired by a female visitation. It is Over is undeviatingly an exercise in romantic glamour: the poet, wandering by moonlight mid the ruins of a great palace, is visited by the wraith of the noble lady once its occupant; whereupon the ruins are restored to their old splendour.

The low work productivity in the felling of hung up trees is wrongly cited by workers in order to justify various more or less safe work techniques. Background and objectives: The purpose of this paper was to determine work productivity in the felling of hung up trees when this activity has a well-defined structure with stages and specific activities that would allow workers to assess injury risk correctly. In addition, this paper aims to identify the moment when workers should give up the manual felling of hung up trees with a hand winch and start using specialized logging equipment. Materials and methods: The research was conducted in the Eastern Carpathians in a spruce (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst.) tree stand where clear cutting normally takes place. A single team of workers was used consisting of two chainsaw operators—a main one and a secondary one. This team had a high level of qualification and experience in the operations performed.

  • The Song Skipped. a Crackling Beat, a Brief Tremor in the Steering Wheel—And Lance Hendricks Noticed the Gap in the Music
1 The song skipped. A crackling beat, a brief tremor in the steering wheel—and Lance Hendricks noticed the gap in the music. He knew every last note of Classical Trumpet Ballads, which had been jammed in the cassette player of his ’93 Buick since the unfortunate day his mother gave him the tape. Now it was his only option. No radio this far from the city. He thumbed the useless eject button, then stared at the speedometer. The needle was suddenly frozen, point- ing straight up and down, like a compass finding north. “Hey,” Lance said, tapping the dash. The needle hovered like a slender middle finger, then went slip- ping off to the right: 65, 75, 85, gone. A blank face of numbers. Like he was going no speed at all. Sitka spruce and Madrones blurred past. Douglas fir, and the flash of a small sign: entering wilderness area Evergreens and sky vaulted into a new layer of atmosphere and the car’s dome light flickered. A wet grumbling in the engine. 3 Lance turned up the trumpet solo, trying to ignore the sound. He hummed along, forcing himself to smile. The gas pedal went squishy and the Buick jolted so hard it made his teeth click. “Hey!” Lance said, pointing at the steering wheel. “No. Not happening.” Not tonight. Not with six hours left to drive. When the song skipped again, Lance’s mind skipped with it, launching his thoughts over 370 miles of rivers and roads to Bend, Oregon. It was 3:35 P.M. Right now his friends would be at Jonathan’s house, preparing for the party of a lifetime.
