Palaeontological Association 4 ANNUAL MEETING The Palaeontological Association 59th Annual Meeting 14th–17th December 2015 Cardiff University and Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales The programme for the 59th Annual Meeting of the Palaeontological Association is provided after the following summary of the Meeting. An abstract booklet including details of the AGM will be distributed at the Meeting. Registration and booking The final deadline for registration is Friday 13th November 2015. No refunds will be available after the final deadline. Registration and payment (by credit card) are via online forms available on the Palaeontological Association website (<http://www.palass.org/>). Please note that any transactions will be in sterling (£:GBP). Accommodation must be booked separately (see below). The cost of registration is the same as last year and includes sandwich lunches on Tuesday and Wednesday, the icebreaker reception on Monday evening, full registration package and tea/coffee from Monday through to Wednesday. The Annual Dinner costs £45. It will be held at Cardiff City Hall, which is five minutes’ walk from the University and the Museum. The evening will begin with a drinks reception followed by a three-course meal. Oral presentations All speakers (apart from the symposium speakers) will be allocated 15 minutes. You should therefore prepare a 12 minute talk to allow time for questions and switching between presenters. We will have a number of parallel sessions in adjacent theatres so timing will be especially important. All of the lecture theatres will have a single A/V projector linked to a large screen. All presentations should be submitted and checked the day before they are scheduled. Cardiff University is PC-based, so Mac-based presentations may cause problems, particularly if animations are included.

PURPOSE OF REPORT This report describes the work of Glamorgan Archives for the period 1 March to 31 May 2014. 2. BACKGROUND As part of the agreed reporting process the Glamorgan Archivist updates the Joint Committee quarterly on the work and achievements of the service. 3. Members are asked to note the content of this report. 4. ISSUES A. MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES 1. Staff: establishment Maintain appropriate levels of staff There has been no staff movement during the quarter. From April the Deputy Glamorgan Archivist reduced her hours to 30 a week. Review establishment The manager-led regrading process has been followed for four staff positions in which responsibilities have increased since the original evaluation was completed. The posts are Administrative Officer, Senior Records Officer, Records Assistant and Preservation Assistant. All were in detriment following the single status assessment and comprise 7 members of staff. Applications have been submitted and results are awaited. 1 Develop skill sharing programme During the quarter 44 volunteers and work experience placements have contributed 1917 hours to the work of the Office. Of these 19 came from Cardiff, nine each from the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend, four from Rhondda Cynon Taf and three from outside our area: from Newport, Haverfordwest and Catalonia. In addition nine tours have been provided to prospective volunteers and two references were supplied to former volunteers.

    Cardiff 19th Century Timeline Game education resource This resource aims to: • engage pupils in local history • stimulate class discussion • focus an investigation into changes to people’s daily lives in Cardiff and south east Wales during the nineteenth century. Introduction Playing the Cardiff C19th timeline game will raise pupil awareness of historical figures, buildings, transport and events in the locality. After playing the game, pupils can discuss which of the ‘facts’ they found interesting, and which they would like to explore and research further. This resource contains a series of factsheets with further information to accompany each game board ‘fact’, which also provide information about sources of more detailed information related to the topic. For every ‘fact’ in the game, pupils could explore: People – Historic figures and ordinary population Buildings – Public and private buildings in the Cardiff locality Transport – Roads, canals, railways, docks Links to Castell Coch – every piece of information in the game is linked to Castell Coch in some way – pupils could investigate those links and what they tell us about changes to people’s daily lives in the nineteenth century.     Sherman Theatre Senghennydd Road Cardiff CF24 4YE Charity Registration Number: 1118364 The Sherman Theatre was opened in 1973 with substantial financial support from what is now Cardiff University. In 1987, the University withdrew its financial support for the theatre and offered it for sale. The Arts Council of Great Britain purchased the building with a special grant from the Welsh Office and the new Sherman Theatre Company was granted a 125 year lease. Ownership has now passed to the Arts Council of Wales (ACW). From 1990 – 2006, the theatre had a strong focus on theatre for young audiences until 2007 when, at the instigation of the ACW, the Sherman Theatre Company and Sgript Cymru, the national development company for theatre writing, were merged to form Sherman Cymru – now Sherman Theatre. In 2014, following a restructure of the Executive Team, Rachel O’Riordan was appointed Artistic Director of the company and has delivered a successful vision over the past five years. During her tenure, the theatre has firmly placed the development of Welsh / Wales- based artists at the heart of its new writing strand of work with successes such as Iphigenia in Splott, Killology and The Cherry Orchard by Gary Owen, Bird by Katherine Chandler, Tremor by Brad Birch, among many others. Following a £6.5 million redevelopment, beginning in early 2010, the Sherman building re- opened its doors in February 2012. Public and backstage facilities were transformed. With its 452 seat main-house and a flexible 60-150 seat studio theatre, it is a fantastic facility for the arts in Cardiff.
