    An Analysis of the Epistemic Link between the Catholic Religion and Violence in Uganda’s History Kizito Kiyimba [email protected] Abstract Uganda’s recent history of violence has had an interesting characteristic: it has arguably been mainly within the Christian and more specifically Catholic religious space. I examine four cases of religious-related violence in order to cipher the epistemic roots of such violence. The four cases are: the Uganda Martyrs; Ms Alice Lakwena and the Holy Spirit Movement; Mr Joseph Kony and the Lord’s Resistance Army; and Ms Ceredonia Mwerinde and the Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God. I examine the literature critically in order to test the plausibility of various positions on the possible link between the Catholic religion and violence in Uganda. My analysis looks at the links both from the point of view of the perpetrators of violence and the adherent/victims of the violence. In the end, I find that the epistemic links are more justificatory/explanatory than they are causal. Keywords: Religious violence, epistemics of violence, Uganda, Roman Catholicism Introduction: Theoretical Background Violence in the Great Lakes Region of Africa in general, and violence in Uganda in particular, are not new phenomena. And if we consider the Great Lakes region as including the Horn of Africa, then violence in the Great Lakes Region has had a religious hue to it. The third step at continental level defi- netly indicates a sign of hope both for those who participated in the meeting, as well as for those who, through this report, share with us this fruitful expe- rience, which was held in Namugongo. Together with the lay martyrs from Uganda, we look forward towards the forthcoming Assembly of the African Synod of Bishops. In his message for the occasion, the Holy Father reminded us of the three key words - contemplation, communion and mission - which John Paul II entrusted to CA at Loreto in 2004. He also referred to the “programme” which Paul VI presented to CA laypeople, precisely in Namugongo in 1969 and which is still relevant today.

    Mission Statement Carl Koch’s belief that he was “just a steward of the fi nances given by God to use on His behalf” inspired the commitment he and his wife, Paula, made to founding the Koch Foundation in 1979. The Foundation’s goals are to strengthen and to propagate the Roman Catholic faith by providing grant support for a wide variety of evangelization eff orts. In considering applications, major emphasis is placed on sound but fi nancially needy evangelical programs. The Koch Foundation is international in scope with no geographical preference. Carl and Paula Koch 2 Letter From The Executive Director I have been blessed in my life to have had several family members who chose to dedicate their lives in service to God, so there has never been a time when I did not visit my relatives and see a cousin dressed all in black with a worn yet beloved Rosary tucked carefully into her simple belt. I can remember as a young child Sister teaching me to say the Rosary and telling me that whenever I attended Mass I was to pray the Rosary. That memory has stayed with me into adulthood and, when I became a mother, the Rosary took on a special and personal meaning. I found I was praying the Rosary more often and usually for something concerning my son and family. I began to realize that I needed the solace I could only fi nd by praying the Rosary. Like many parents, in addition to my work at the Foundation I am also my son’s chauff eur, carting him to and from various sports events.
