Fifteenth-century England reflections on warrior's conduct. 2020. 378f. Ph.D. Degree in History – Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, São Paulo State University, Franca, 2020. ABSTRACT At the first half of fifteenth-century, military expeditions led to the effective occupation of French domains claimed by English monarchs. Despite the successful results achieved in the campaigns started in 1413, it was generally asserted that, until the beginning of 1450’s, the governance of those territories was characterized by instabilities originated from the inadequate behavior of warriors on both sides of the struggle. Such state of overall jeopardy was noticed by William Worcester (1415-1480/5?) in his treatise Boke of Noblesse, where he denounced a state of disorderly warfare, on the one hand, poorly associated with virtues and, on the other, strongly related to vices, stretched away from Christian recommended models. When compared to his contemporaries ideas, William Worcester’s offer evidences regarding crucial steps in conflict organization and performance, enabling, in like manner, a proper questioning of both French and English martial enterprises characteristics. Aware of such perspective, this inquest targets what was understood as condemnable in war making, and, therefore, it interrogates English writings about the desired paths to be tread on effective conflict development and conquest plans. Shortly, this research aims to question a particular fraction of military history: the reasonings and evaluations concerning warriors’ behaviour, scrutinizing their role as a mirror that enables a deeper interpretation of people’s conducts beyond war itself. ROGER ASCHAM AND HUMANIST LEARNING IN TUDOR ENGLAND by HARRAL E. LANDRY,, A THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of History in the Graduate School of the University of Alabama UNIVERSITY, ALABAMA 1958 PREFACE Roger Ascham was probably the greatest teacher in Elizabethan England. The period is graced with the name of his most famous and most spectacular pupil - Elizabeth Tu.dor. His life was dedicated, if indeed to anything, to the Greek ideal of "a sound mind in a sound body •." In addition, he reached a zenith as probably the greatest Latin letter writer in England. This achievement is all the more remarkable since his era was one of scholarship in the language of ancient Latium and of Rome. Yet, he is without a biographer, except in short sketches prefacing the editions of his writings. The purpose of this thesis is to collect some of the thoroughly scattered material and look a little more close ly at Ascham as a student, scholar, and particularly as a teacher. Every effort has been made to work with source material. Old English spellings have been modernized to provide continuity, uniformity, and smoothness of reading. Exceptions will be found in original book titles. Making a study of ideas is like steering a tricky passage between the perils of Scylla and Charybdis. In narrow straits the channel is often both, deep and indeter minate. The navigation of such a passage, even on my unlearned and far from comprehensive level, would have been impossible were it not for the generous assistance of a number of people.

Jambeck At the end of the Treasury of the City of Ladies, Christine de Pizan writes, I thought that I would multiply this work throughout the world in various copies, whatever the cost might be, and present it in various places to queens, princesses, and noble ladies. Through their efforts, it will be... circulated among other women.... Seen and heard by many valiant ladies and women of authority, both at the present time and in times to come, they will pray to God on behalf of their faithful servant Christine, ...wishing they might have known her.1 As Charity Canon Willard observes, Christine accurately predicted her own subsequent fame and her audience which would span centuries.2 Indeed, the rolls of this readership reveal generations of women of achievement and distinction, many of whom Willard has identified as patrons and owners of Christine's work: Isabeau of Bavaria, Anne of France, Isabel of Portugal, and Margaret of 1 A Medieval Woman's Mirror of Honor. Bibliography Sources for further reading May 2011 National Trust Bibliography Introduction Over many years a great deal has been published about the properties and collections in the care of the National Trust, yet to date no single record of those publications has been established. The following Bibliography is a first attempt to do just that, and provides a starting point for those who want to learn more about the properties and collections in the National Trust’s care. Inevitably this list will have gaps in it. Do please let us know of additional material that you feel might be included, or where you have spotted errors in the existing entries. All feedback to [email protected] would be very welcome. Please note the Bibliography does not include minor references within large reference works, such as the Encyclopaedia Britannica, or to guidebooks published by the National Trust. How to use The Bibliography is arranged by property, and then alphabetically by author. For ease of use, clicking on a hyperlink will take you from a property name listed on the Contents Page to the page for that property. ‘Return to Contents’ hyperlinks will take you back to the contents page. To search by particular terms, such as author or a theme, please make use of the ‘Find’ function, in the ‘Edit’ menu (or use the keyboard shortcut ‘[Ctrl] + [F]’). Locating copies of books, journals or specific articles Most of the books, and some journals and magazines, can of course be found in any good library. For access to rarer titles a visit to one of the country’s copyright libraries may be necessary.

  • “No Gretter Perile”: Over-Mighty Subjects and Fifteenth-Century Politics in Malory’S Morte Darthur
“No gretter perile”: Over-mighty Subjects and Fifteenth-Century Politics in Malory’s Morte Darthur Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Michael M. Baker, M.A. Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Karen A. Winstead, Advisor Richard Firth Green Ethan Knapp Copyright by Michael M. Baker 2013 Abstract Traditionally read as a deeply nostalgic text – one that looks back to Arthur’s Camelot as a Golden Age of English history and chivalry – Sir Thomas Malory’s Morte Darthur is, instead, a very contemporarily relevant text. Completed in 1469/70, at the mathematical center of the divisive Wars of the Roses (c. 1455-1485), Malory’s Morte considers problematic contemporary political issues that threaten the peace and stability of the realm. Chief among these are issues involving over-mighty subjects, identified by Sir John Fortescue in The Governance of England (c. 1471/75) as the greatest threat to fifteenth-century kings. Since K. B. McFarlane’s 1964 declaration that “only an undermighty ruler had anything to fear from overmighty subjects,” however, the over- mighty have been under-studied. It is important, though, when examining a text to consider the prevalent beliefs of its time; even if McFarlane’s statement is true, neither Fortescue nor Malory would have agreed with it. Malory’s Morte does not create perfect analogues to fifteenth-century persons or events (i.e., Lancelot is not the Kingmaker, the final battle near Salisbury is not Towton), but it does create many parallels to fifteenth-century political issues.

  • The Nichols Archive Project and Its Value for Leicester Historians by Julian Pooley
The Nichols Archive Project and its Value for Leicester Historians by Julian Pooley This article examines the personal and business papers that were accumulated by John Nichols and his successors between c.1770 and 1873. As historian of Leicestershire, Nichols established strong ties with the county that were maintained by his family. The many references to Leicestershire in their letters and travel journals will be of considerable interest to local historians and archaeologists. Although thousands of Nichols papers are held by repositories around the world, thousands more survive in private collections. The Nichols Archive Project aims to prepare an analytical guide to this important archive of printing and antiquarian history. Introduction On the 10 June 1766 William Bowyer (1699-1777), master of one of London’s largest printing houses, received an unwelcome letter from a young man who, barely two months earlier, he had taken into partnership. He had taken the boy as an apprentice in 1757, trained him carefully for the printing trade, set him Latin exercises, introduced him to authors whose works were passing through their press and entrusted him with delicate business negotiations. Now his hopes that the young man would devote himself to their business and, perhaps, one day inherit it, seemed to be in jeopardy. The young man, John Nichols (1745-1826), was in love with the daughter of a tailor from Little Wyld Street and clearly meant to marry her, ‘In short, Sir, you cannot but have observed of late Absence of Mind in a person you once (not without reason) thought alert. You must have seen a Remissness in my Behaviour; and eager Desire of retreating from Business at every Leisure Minute.

  • London and the Crown in the Reign of Henry VII
London and the Crown in the Reign of Henry VII Samantha Patricia Harper Institute of Historical Research, School of Advanced Study University of London Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy July 2015 1 Declaration I, Samantha Patricia Harper, hereby declare that this thesis is purely my own work and is the written record of work carried out for the degree of Ph.D. at the Institute of Historical Research and has not been submitted in any previous application for a higher degree. Date: Signed: 2 Abstract The reign of Henry VII suffers from academic neglect, partly as a consequence of its existence on the threshold of the traditional divide between the medieval and the early modern periods. These are frequently regarded as distinct areas of study, each with its own historiographical traditions shaped by the differing nature of the sources for each. Consequently a significant gap exists in the historiography of the development of both the City of London as a capital city and the English monarchy, and in particular the relationship between them. This thesis seeks to address this lacuna. Using the records of the Crown, the City government and its institutions, this study focuses on the political interaction between the Crown and the City. The first two chapters explore the themes of expectation and political affiliation at the start of the reign and assess the changes and continuities from the Yorkist period. It is argued that Henry’s unfamiliarity with the capital and vice versa led to mutual mistrust which resulted in a confrontation which shaped Henry’s perception of the capital for the rest of the reign.
