Foreigners are welcome to use public health facilities but, fees may be required, depending on the services and exams rendered. *If you have health Insurance other than HTH, you should contact your Health care provider for an updated list of participating physicians, medical facilities and payment method procedures. As many private and public health facilities administrative policies and payment procedures maybe different regarding your private health insurance from your country. MONEY MATTERS Cash Do not carry large amounts of cash with you while in Florence or traveling within the country. There are many different and easy ways for you to get money. ATM/Debit card You may be able to withdraw money from your bank account at home by using your ATM card. The money is immediately deducted from your checking account and you won't be charged interest. When using an ATM machine make sure that your card has access to the Cirrus and/or Plus networks. If your card has one of these symbols and you find a machine with the same symbols, you should be able to access funds from your CHECKING account. If your debit card has a VISA or MasterCard logo, it should work to withdraw

5 cash overseas, but you will need the pin number you usually use in the United States. You can find ATM machines (in Italian - Bancomat) at almost any bank (i.e. Piazza della Repubblica, Via Nazionale, Via Por Santa Maria (near Ponte Vecchio), Via Calimala next to La Rinascente at the Banco di Sicilia, and Via Panzani in front of the Billa. Most of the machines have instructions in English. It is always advisable to check with your bank at home, the withdrawal amount allowed per day, most Italian banks do allow a maximum of 250 euros per day. Credit Card VISA and MasterCard, are the most widely accepted credit cards worldwide. American Express and Diner's Club are less widespread. You should not assume that you can use credit cards as easily abroad as you can in the US.

Western Union You can have money wired to you via Western Union which has an office in Piazza Stazione.

Money Exchanging Machines Throughout Europe, at banks you will often find machines which look like ATMs that can exchange your cash at pretty good rates. The best thing is that they are open 24 hrs/day.

Banks are generally open from around 8:00am to 1:00pm and in the afternoon from 3pm to 4 pm. Hours vary from bank to bank. Travelers Cheques *Most places in Italy do NOT accept travelers cheques. Any currency excahnge location will exchange travelers cheques for euros for a fee. 6 Holidays Below is a the calendar of our National holidays. Being that Italy is a predominantly Catholic country, these holidays are mostly in accordance with such customs. Most government and local businesses also acknowledge these holidays. Absence from school for other religious holidays not in accordance with local customs will not be excused. This decision does not represent the beliefs of APICIUS/FUA or its staff, but rather reflects the local culture the students of APICIUS/FUA have come to take part in. Below are the dates APICIUS/FUA will be closed (Also check the Academic Dates, located in your Academic Handbook):

January 1 New Year's Day - August 15 Assumption - January 6 Epiphany - November 1 All Saints Day Easter Sunday - Easter Monday, Monday following Easter (Pasquetta) - December 8 Immaculate Conception December 25 Christmas - December 26 Saint Stephen's Day - April 25 Liberation Day - May 1 Labor Day June 2 Italian National Holiday - June 24 San Giovanni (Patron Saint in Florence) COMMUNICATION TELEPHONES Just as any country around the world public phones are slowly substituted by personal cell phones. You can make sure to find a public phone at Public Phone Center -Telecom - Via Cavour 21/r open from 8:00am to 9:45pm. To use the public phones you can buy a phone card “scheda telefonica” that works as a debit card at most pay phones. This way, you see the total on your card decreasing as you talk, and can monitor the length of your conversations. You will find these cards at the Tabacchi shops and news stands. Some of them provide more than 5 hours of conversation from any pay phone. Keep in mind that pre-paid US phone cards, that require you to make a call through a 1-800 or toll free number are not accessible from Italy. Calling with a Calling Card If you have one of the following phones cards, you can charge your calls and pay later. By calling on an American phone card, you are charged with US rates, no matter where you are calling from. When you are calling the USA from Europe, it is always cheaper to call on the phone card, due to the high telephone rates in Europe, especially Italy. Attention: be careful if you call from one European country to another, it is as though you were calling a European country from the USA - In this case it would be less expensive dialing direct from Italy. The following are access codes to use from Italy to the major US long distance companies:

USA via AT&T ...... 172-1011 ...... USA via US Sprint ...... 172-1877 USA via IDB ...... 172-1777 ...... USA via MCI ...... 172-1022

Just dial the access number and the operator or recording will answer. These operators can also place COLLECT CALLS for those who do not have calling cards. Keep in mind that with most cell phones it is NOT possible to call the US by using a calling card. However, this is possible from a pay phone. Here are some examples of “How to be called in Italy.”

To call outside Italy: ...... 00+ country code+area code + number To be called in Italy (from USA): ...... 011 39 55 *** if it is a landline number (e.g. the school phone) ...... 011 39 ******** if it is cell phone number To be called in Italy (from Brazil): ...... 00+39+055+ Local number (e.g. fixed line) To be called in Italy (from Korea): ...... 001- 002+39+055+ Local number (e.g. fixed line)

Cellular Phones: Here are a few addresses of places where you can rent or purchase cell phones. 10 MEASURING DIFFERENCES In addition to the various cultural and linguistic differences you will encounter in Italy, you will find some basic differences in the way things are measured. Temperature In Europe the temperatures are measured in degrees Celsius (or Centigrade). Thus, when Florentines complain about 40°c weather, they don't mean it's cold! Fahrenheit to Celsius: subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit figure, multiply by 5, then divide by 9 to get the Celsius figure. Celsius to Fahrenheit: multiply the Celsius figure by 9, divide by 5, then add 32 to get the Fahrenheit figure. Weight You will discover that all things in Italy are weighed according to grams (grammi) and kilograms (kilogrammi). Another unit of measure you should become familiar with is the etto (100 grams). Ounces to grams: multiply the ounce figure by 28.3 to get the number of grams. Grams to ounces: multiply the gram figure by 0.35 to get the number of ounces. Pounds to kilograms: multiply the pound figure by 0.45 to get the number of kilograms. Kilograms to pounds: multiply the kilogram figure by 2.21 to get the number of pounds. Distance All distances in Italy are measured according to the metric system (millimeters, centimeters, meters and kilometers). Inches to centimeters: multiply the inch figure by 2.54 to get the number of centimeters. Centimeters to inches: multiply the centimeter figure by 0.39 to get the number of inches. Miles to kilometers: multiply the mile figure by 1.61 to get the number of kilometers. Kilometers to miles: multiply the kilometer figure by 0.62 to get the number of miles.

Polo Museale of Florence Is a website that provides information about museums, upcoming and current exhibitions taking place in Florence and much more. Take a look at their website and start planning your cultural excursion(s). www.polomuseale.firenze.it/english SAFETY TIPS Florence is a safe city, as long as you follow common sense and take precautions.

* Always carry a copy of your passport with you. Carrying a personal document is mandatory by law, but it is always safer when you are in Florence, to carry the xerox copy rather than the original. Note that while traveling, or going to the bank or the American Express offices, you will need your original.

* Beware of pick-pockets. Pick-pockets feed on easily accessible purses or wallets in large crowds and packed buses. They concentrate near the main tourist attractions and museums; Avoid carrying your wallets in the outside pocket or at the top of your backpacks. Never carry too much cash on you.

CULTURAL TIPS The value and benefits of your study abroad program are in large part determined by your attitudes, behavior and responsibility. First of all please keep in mind that things are not better or worse in your host country they are just different! You must always keep in mind and accept that your host country has a different culture, political situation and history and that you are a guest, therefore the burden of adaptation is on you, not the natives around you. Keeping this in mind, you will give yourself more opportunities to see and experience things and you will be able to engage more easily with locals. The more you interact, the more rewarding your overall study abroad experience is likely to be. Although it can at times be frustrating, you should try to maximize your contact with local students and non-students. You will learn and enjoy your time abroad further, if you are in touch more with the people around you. Here are some tips to help you make the most out of your time abroad:

- Be flexible - Be ready to adapt - Get out and explore - Try not to judge the people and culture but to observe differences - Keep a positive attitude - Get in touch with and learn from the local population - Treat people with respect - Do not take any health or safety risks

14 Drink ing in Public You will probably find that Italians enjoy social drinking as much as many Americans, but they frown upon drunkenness and do not find it amusing or indeed tolerable. Walking around the city with an open bottle of alcohol may result in a fine, it is not a local custom. Know the law, local customs, and your limits. Tipping In most restaurants you will be charged a coperto (cover charge) equal to two dollars (approx.) for one person seated. This nominal charge appears to have originated as the fee for the staff to cover the table with a tablecloth and serve bread. Tipping is separate, and up to you, but the coperto is a standard. Standing in line Throughout Italy most people seem reluctant to stand in line. They often crowd around bank teller windows, ticket booths, food stands and cashiers with little respect for the fact that somebody else arrived there first. This can be a really nerve-racking cultural experience for most Americans who are used to an orderly line. It is something that takes getting used to, and might require you to be a bit more assertive. Just understand that this is another cultural factor, and not a display of mean spirited behavior.

APARTMENT TIPS Please be conscience: the use of water, electricity, gas and telephone are very expensive in Italy, compared to what you are used to here are a few tips to keep the bills under control:

*Avoid taking 30 minute showers or innumerable baths each day - also because your roommates might have ice-cold showers!

* The toilet is not a disposal - don't risk clogging it by flushing things like hair, dental floss, sanitary items or the like.

* When using your washing machines realize that cycles take longer (nearly an hour!) so wait until you have a full load. Use 50-60ºc water for whites and 30ºc for dark colors. You may want to wash delicate items (sweaters for example) by hand. To dry clothes, use the clothes lines or hang things near the heater.

*The tap water in Florence is absolutely safe to drink, but drinking may not agree with your taste-buds. You can find bottled water at any local food store or bar, but it is generally less expensive if bought in bulk at the supermarket.

*With regards to electricity - please note - the buildings in Florence are rather old... so having the washing machine, a hair dryer, and all the lights on may cause your fuse to blow. It’s easy to fix, you need to know where the circuit breakers are and you just have to flip the switch. But you can avoid that problem by only using what you need. If you go away for the weekend, Don’t leave any lights on!! * Stoves and ovens are generally gas operated. You will have a switch or valve to turn on the gas. You must ignite the burners on the stove with a match or a sparker, which you can buy at the supermarket. Turn off the gas when you leave for long periods of time, just to be safe. When it turns cold, the heaters do not have to be on HIGH all night, they tend to get warm quickly, and will last through the night.

The best way to keep your rooms cool in the summer is to keep them dark. Close the outside shutters during the hottest part of the day and your room will feel air-conditioned.

MISSING HOME? One of the reasons that made you decide to take part in a study abroad program, was that you were probably hoping to make new friends and learn a lot about the culture in your host country. Yet, when you find yourself having to deal every day with unknown situations in a foreign language and unfamiliar surroundings, you can get frustrated and stressed, no matter how broad-minded or prepared you may be. When you travel and live in a foreign culture, most things familiar are removed. This kind of feeling is called culture shock. Culture shock is a normal and necessary part in making the transition from one culture to another. As time goes by, though, you will begin to feel more comfortable with the local language, ways of doing things and you will begin to be a much more independent person. Mostly, everyone you see at school is experiencing these feelings in one way or another. Remember that you are not alone. During these times it really helps to remember all of the hard work and planning you put into getting here.

The following are some helpful tips to help you handle culture shock. Participate Just watching life go on around you isn't good enough you really need to try things for yourself. Don't worry about making a mistake. Active participation also in conversation is very important and your efforts will be appreciated!

15 Talk about it! Don't forget the Student Services Advisor and the staff are here to help you. We have encountered many other students with the same issues in the past and know what it feels like to be homesick in a new place. Just be willing to discuss your concerns. INTRODUCTION TO THE CITY OF FLORENCE Central Florence is quite small and can easily be explored on foot. Here is a quick overview of the most well-known landmarks. Keep in mind that, should you ever get lost, a very good way to figure out where you are is to go into any bar and ask to see their Tutto Città a booklet with a street index, detailed maps and bus routes.

Il Duomo (Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore) is the most recognizable monument in all of Florence. It is famous for its construction (the Cupola) and its builder, . It will therefore serve as your point of reference. If you are ever lost, simply ask “Dovè il Duomo?” and you are on your way.

Baptistery is a large, octagonal building where the royalty of Florence used to be baptized. Stop for a look at the famous doors by Ghiberti.

Via de Calzaiuoli starts right in front of the Duomo and leads to Piazza della Signoria. This street is filled with fashionable and expensive shops and occasionally you will see street artists and performers.

Via Roma runs parallel to Via de Calzaiuoli. It also contains a lot of fashionable and expensive shops. It leads you to Piazza della Repubblica, if you continue on you will arrive at Ponte Vecchio, famous for its jewelery shops. A little historical information before it was taken over by the famous shops today it was packed with butcher shops and merchants.

Via de'Tornabuoni and Via delle Vigna Nuova, offers luxury shopping of top fashion houses like Gucci, Pucci, Ferragamo, Hermes, Armani, Braccalini, Cavalli, Etro and much much more. If your curious to see the latest and hottest fashions take a stroll or shop till you drop!

Piazza della Repubblica bustles with everyday traffic of people heading to work or conducting business. It is flanked on both sides by upscale bars/restaurants that move outside when the weather turns warm. Here is where you will find the post office and many public phones.

Piazza della Signoria. As you enter the square, you will see a group of famous statues (mostly replicas of the originals now housed in various museums in the city). Piazza della Signoria has functioned as an important social and political gathering place from the period until today. The Palazzo (huge building) served as the home of the city government during the Renaissance.

Galleria degli Uffizi is situated to the right of Piazza Signoria, facing the statues and is one of the world's most famous museums. It houses works by such artists as Botticelli and Da Vinci. The courtyard of this U-shaped building is often filled with street performers, artists and students gathering to talk.

Fiume Arno. If you continue straight to the bottom of the Uffizi, you will come to Fiume Arno (Arno River). The Arno divides the city in two parts; 80% of the city lies on the side on which you stand. The rest, including the Pitti Palace and the Boboli gardens, lies on the other, known as Oltrarno. It is far less touristy and worth a visit for a taste of authentic Florence.

Remember 1966: All over Florence keep an eye open above head height for the wall plaques commemorating the levels reached by the flood waters of the River Arno on 4 November 1966. You'll notice them particularly in the Santa Croce area, one of the lowest, and worst hit, parts. The floods were a catastrophe for the city and its arts treasures.

BASIC ITALIAN Italian pronunciation is totally consistent. 18 GETTING HOME Getting to the Florence Airport For early morning flights, it is a good idea to reserve a taxi the night before. You should plan on arriving at the airport at least two hours before an international flight, and it takes about 30 minutes to get there in normal traffic. Every half hour the Vola in bus shuttle service connects the airport arrivals side with the S.M. Novella Railway Station (Via Caterina da Siena, 17). The journey takes approx. 25 minutes. Tickets (\5) can be purchased on board the bus. Getting to the Pisa Airport It is really easy to reach the Pisa Airport, both by train (look for Pisa Airport station) and via bus. .It will take about 1,5 hours. There is a bus which is departing from the Florence Station called terravision. You can book online at www.terravision.eu/airport_services.html Getting to the Rome Airport You may want to consider arriving in Rome the day before you are scheduled to leave, but if your flight leaves from Rome mid-day or after, you can take a Eurostar (the ride lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes) or Intercity train (2 hour ride) directly to Stazione Termini and from there the train Fiumicino Leonardo, that will take you to the airport in 30 minutes. Getting to the Milan Airports If your flight leaves early in the morning, you might consider taking a late afternoon train to Milan the day before your departure. From the Milan central train station you will need to take a shuttle to the Malpensa or Linate airport. The shuttles are right outside the station and depart frequently. The ride takes about an hour. Student Services created sports activities in connection with the academic courses offered to students. “ Mens sana in corpore sano” (mentally and physically healthy) is our philosophy. We understand that one must be in shape in all aspects of their life in order to truly appreciate their Italian experience here in Florence. Monday nights you’ll have the opportunity to meet up after a long day of classes to play team sports like soccer and volleyball (weather-permitting). For those students who like to jog, there is also a well lit, traffic-free path. We provide our students with a safe, friendly, monitored environment. Each semester we host the “Soccer Spectacular”, where students play with the staff and faculty. This creates a wonderful opportunity for our students to interact in a positive and fun evening with staff/faculty outside of the classroom.

Only want to observe your peers? No problem, we because we also welcome your team spirit. Come out & cheer for the teams… Toss your pom poms in the air & wave them around like you just don’t care! Connecting Cultures On-going Orientation Seminars, Community Service, Chat Pal and Italian Family Club. ”One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” Henry Miller - Writer On-going Orientation SEMINARS “I have really enjoyed all three of the Connecting Cultures sessions. The workshop, will give you an insight into the Italian culture, but it also provides a hands-on experience by encouraging interaction through conversation with the Italians that attend these workshops. These workshops have been really fun, (Italian culture, great people, and an Italian culinary treat at the end) what a great way to truly experience Italy!” Ellie (Spring student).

On-going Orientation program consists of 3 sessions and is designed to enhance the cultural awareness and to guide students through the study abroad experience. It allows students to maximize their educational outcome and personal growth during their time in Florence. Each session will consist of a lecture, workshop experience and discussion groups. Sessions will be held by specialized faculty highly experienced in the study abroad field. During each session information on how to connect with the Florence Community will be discussed. Italian students and second semester students will be invited. Refreshments will follow each session.

20 Chat Pal (Non-Credit Conversation Exchange) Conversation exchange is a free service offered by the Student Life & Development Department to connect Italian and foreign students. We will help students find a conversation partner. The Conversation Exchange program requires participants to meet at least once a week (one hour). Partners must speak in Italian for 30 minutes and 30 minutes in the student’s mother-tongue. Specific time and locations are arranged between the partners. Further information, opportunities and application deadlines will be announced at orientation and during the semester. Through the Italian Family Club, the students will closely interact with their family members, while discovering and observing their unique habits and customs. Students and families will be “matched”, according to the characteristics and requirements of both parties. They will build a two-way relationship and communication skills that will develop over the semester through mutual and productive exchanges.

Participants are REQUIRED to make a time commitment to the family!

Snapshots takes you back to the basics. Students will build their own pinhole cameras and learn how to use them. Each student will be given a photo assignment and take to the streets to capture a “Snapshot” (special visual moment). They will also create unique frames to display their final prints.

MUSIC & CINEMA Connecting Through the Arts

Student Services is delighted to bring the arts into your world. Through entertainment one can gain an appreciation for the Italian culture through music and cinema. Music Music allows you to express your emotional range. It can bring joy to ones’ world or move one to the dance floor. It can capture sadness and bring tears to your eyes. Whatever state you are in or desire, music is a link that will take you there. Music night offers music lovers and musicians a chance to share their passion through a common language. Together, we will decide how best to express ourselves based on the talents and desires of the group. Possibilities include creating a band (or two!), playing a gig in a local spot, creating a CD in a professional recording studio, and anything else our talents or imaginations come up with.
