ANNUAL REPORT 2018

www.sigmanursing.org

@SigmaNursing Message from the President

Dear Xi Members,

It is my honor and privilege to serve as president of Xi Lambda Chapter, , for the 2017-2019 term. Looking back on the past year, I am incredibly grateful for the work and dedication of our executive and committee members.

We have had a wonderfully successful year as a chapter, increasing in membership and visibility within the nursing community. In February, we held our annual fundraising event, “Pasta with a Purpose” at Mona Lisa Ristorante, with proceeds supporting our Xi Lambda Research Award and Just a Warm Sleep, a local non-profit organization providing basic necessities including food, clothing and shelter to those in need. We were also privileged to welcome fifteen new inductees to our Chapter! In addition, members and guests enjoyed a wonderful meal, and had plenty of opportunities for networking.

Our dedicated executive members have worked hard over the past year to increase the profile and presence of Xi Lambda Chapter within the nursing community in Winnipeg. Xi Lambda was represented and actively engaged with nurses at multiple events: the Helen Glass Research Symposium, the 8th Annual Advanced Practice Nursing Conference, and the 27th Annual Provincial Palliative Care Conference. Finally, Xi Lambda chapter was represented Nataliya Basova at Sigma’ 44th Biennial Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana.

In 2017, Dr. Donna Martin was the recipient of the Xi Lambda Research Award for her study evaluating the Summer Research Internship Program at the College of Nursing. We anticipate learning more about Dr. Martin’s research in the upcoming year!

I look forward to another year of growth and opportunity, and encourage you to join us throughout the year in making Xi Lambda a place to connect, collaborate and catalyze.

Best regards, Tara

7 Counsellor’s Report

Officer Title: Governance Committee Chair

Place in term: Year 1 (Eligibility Committee since 2014)

Primary Responsibilities: • Lead the recruitment process and be an advocate for membership in the organization: • Lead the procedure for determining membership eligibility and inducting members. • Develop strategies for publicizing and informing students and nursing leaders of membership eligibility criteria. • Secure necessary data from the official records of students to determine eligibility status. • Notify students of their eligibility status and send out the appropriate membership application materials. • Prepare and set up inductions using the Online Induction System. • Should download the latest version and consult the Online Induction System manual for each induction. • Prepare for inductions by downloading and customizing the induction scripts and slides. • Work with the appropriate parties to plan induction ceremony events. • Download and send the “Sample to Send Before Induction” to each eligible candidate before induction.

Past Events/Projects (since last meeting): • Accepted applications for new members • Determined eligibility and entered members into induction system • • We had 15 new members in the February Pasta with a purpose induction – • 8 Graduate Students • 3 Nurse Leaders • We Had 100% acceptance – when notification and invitations were sent out to potential new members (See attached Report of Ceremony Acceptance Rate) • Various recruitment strategies were carried out - For example – notification to undergrad students, Donna and I spoke to the new graduate nursing students at their orientation this past September, invitations were extended to the summer nursing students working at the Manitoba Centre for Nursing and Health Research. Invitations have also been posted, included in newsletters, or extended at such events as the Researcher in Residence week at the University of Manitoba.

8 Present Events/Projects: • Continued recruitment strategies • Update of our application forms – as suggested. I have been in contact with Sigma Theta in Indianapolis. This process may actually be more complex as application forms are now only used for nurse leaders. Eligibility for undergraduate and graduate students is determined by nursing schools by having student records send you a list of the top 35% of students (grade achievement) to ensure eligibility. I think this may be a problem in our faculty as I don’t believe we would have access to that information (but would have to check). We also don’t have that many undergrads applying – we could request that they submit their transcript – they also already need to endorsement. Think we have to clarify our application process for grads and undergrads going forward? Our application forms are also more difficult to update – at this point would likely have to be retyped as the converting of the pdf to a word document has not been working out. However, I will contact one other person (at the MCNHR) who may be able to help us with this – as suggested by Lisa Albensi. • Future Events/Projects: • Continued recruitment of new members • Determine elibiltiy of potential new members • Manage induction system

Ongoing Needs: • As above – more ideas for recruitment?
