The fantastic mode, facilitated by telefantasy’s non-verisimilitudinous genre, presents these visions in a liminal space in which religious and gender representations can potentially subvert or challenge patriarchal and hegemonic representational norms. I analyze Battlestar Galactica (Sci-Fi 2003-2009), Eli Stone (ABC 2008-2009), and Wonderfalls (FOX 2004) for their formal presentation of visions, representations of visionary characters, and the religious representations that form the context for the visions and visionaries. I focus on visionary characters that are directly implicated by the television text as being potential prophets: Laura Roslin and Gaius Baltar on Battlestar Galactica, Eli Stone on Eli Stone, and Jaye Tyler on Wonderfalls.

  • Selecting Television Programs for Language Learning: Investigating Television Programs from the Same Genre
International Journal of English Studies IJES UNIVERSITY OF MURCIA www.um.es/ijes Selecting Television Programs for Language Learning: Investigating Television Programs from the Same Genre STUART WEBB* Victoria University of Wellington Received: 30 January 2010 / Accepted: 23 March 2010 ABSTRACT The scripts of 288 television episodes were analysed to determine the extent to which vocabulary reoccurs in television programs from the same subgenres and unrelated television programs from different genres. Episodes from two programs from each of the following three subgenres of the American drama genre: medical, spy/action, and criminal forensic investigation were compared with different sets of random episodes. The results showed that although there were an equivalent number of running words in each set of episodes, the episodes from programs within the same subgenre contained fewer word families than random programs. The findings also showed that low frequency word families (4000-14,000 levels) reoccur more often in programs within the same subgenre. Together the results indicate that watching programs within the same subgenre may be an effective approach to language learning with television because it reduces the lexical demands of viewing and increases the potential for vocabulary learning. KEYWORDS: Comprehension, corpus linguistics, genre, incidental vocabulary learning, television, vocabulary coverage, word frequency.

  • Starz Partners with Alliance of Women Directors to Increase Representation of Female Directors As Part of Its #Takethelead Initiative
STARZ PARTNERS WITH ALLIANCE OF WOMEN DIRECTORS TO INCREASE REPRESENTATION OF FEMALE DIRECTORS AS PART OF ITS #TAKETHELEAD INITIATIVE Program Builds on Existing Commitment to Staff First-Time Episodic Directors Santa Monica, Calif. – April 9, 2021 – STARZ President and CEO Jeffrey Hirsch announced today during the company’s first #TakeTheLead “Transparency Talk” that it will partner with Alliance of Women Directors (AWD) to increase representation of female directors through the STARZ #TakeTheLead Directors Program. The partnership includes a commitment to staff emerging episodic directors for their first television directing assignment. “We’re proud of the opportunities we’ve created for female and diverse directors thus far, but know there is more we can do,” said Hirsch. “We dedicated our first ‘Transparency Talk’ to shine a light on how important it is to have representation behind the camera, and we’re thrilled to launch STARZ #TakeTheLead Directors Program with AWD. Since mentoring programs don’t always materialize into staff opportunities, we’re excited that this program includes a commitment to not only support, but ultimately hire talented directors who just need an opportunity to put their skills into action.” “More women and people of color behind the camera translates to stories on screen that are more authentic and reflective of our world,” said AnnaLea Arnold, Executive Director at AWD. “By amplifying narratives by, about, and for women, STARZ is making impactful change in the industry and has raised the bar of what inclusion looks like. We’re happy to be a partner on STARZ’s #TakeTheLead initiative and look forward to creating even more opportunities for women and people of color.” AWD members can apply between May 1 and May 15 on the AWD website.
