Tulbagh Renosterveld Project Report
BP TULBAGH RENOSTERVELD PROJECT Introduction The Cape Floristic Region (CFR) is the smallest and richest floral kingdom of the world. In an area of approximately 90 000km² there are over 9 000 plant species found (Goldblatt & Manning 2000). The CFR is recognized as one of the 33 global biodiversity hotspots (Myers, 1990) and has recently received World Heritage Status. In 2002 the Cape Action Plan for the Environment (CAPE) programme identified the lowlands of the CFR as 100% irreplaceable, meaning that to achieve conservation targets all lowland fragments would have to be conserved and no further loss of habitat should be allowed. Renosterveld , an asteraceous shrubland that predominantly occurs in the lowland areas of the CFR, is the most threatened vegetation type in South Africa . Only five percent of this highly fragmented vegetation type still remains (Von Hase et al 2003). Most of these Renosterveld fragments occur on privately owned land making it the least represented vegetation type in the South African Protected Areas network. More importantly, because of the fragmented nature of Renosterveld it has a high proportion of plants that are threatened with extinction. The Custodians of Rare and Endangered Wildflowers (CREW) project, which works with civil society groups in the CFR to update information on threatened plants, has identified the Tulbagh valley as a high priority for conservation action. This is due to the relatively large amount of Renosterveld that remains in the valley and the high amount of plant endemism. The CAPE program has also identified areas in need of fine scale plans and the Tulbagh area falls within one of these: The Upper Breede River planning domain. -

The site has exceptional natural beauty in its soaring basaltic buttresses, incisive dramatic cutbacks, and golden sandstone ramparts as well as visually spectacular sculptured arches, caves, cliffs, pillars and rock pools. The site's diversity of habitats protects a high level of endemic and globally important plants. The site harbors endangered species such as the Cape vulture (Gyps coprotheres) and the bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus). Lesotho’s Sehlabathebe National Park also harbors the Maloti minnow (Pseudobarbus quathlambae), a critically endangered fish species only found in this park. This spectacular natural site contains many caves and rock-shelters with the largest and most concentrated group of paintings in Africa south of the Sahara. They represent the spiritual life of the San people, who lived in this area over a period of 4,000 years. © UNESCO SUMMARY 2020 Conservation Outlook Finalised on 01 Dec 2020 SIGNIFICANT CONCERN The conservation outlook for Maloti-Drakensberg Park is of significant concern. The EKZNW management staff are highly dedicated and experienced and there is also significant appreciation for the values of the Maloti Drakensberg by communities living nearby as evidenced, for example, by the vehemently strong opposition to the possibility of oil and gas exploration in the area. -

South Africa Travel Guide 2017 1 From the Editor... After a few failed attempts at collecting travel information about South Africa, I decided it would be a great idea to publish my own South Africa Travel Guide. It has taken me about 3 years to assemble this valuable publication (in between extra hours in the CLO Office and publishing JJ’s and Classifieds, and more Classi- fieds, and more JJ’s). Realistically, I thought I would lose my mind if I heard, “I will send over travel brochures ‘just now’” one more time... It has been a lot of work, but being in the CLO Office is the reason that I started this venture in the first place. My favorite part of working in the CLO Office is helping people who are searching for travel information. There is no greater reward as the Editor of the Jacaranda Journal, than to hear that one of my readers has booked a vacation or some sort of adventure because of a travel story or advice from our office. Travelling means taking a break from everyday routines and just enjoying life. I personally believe that there is so much benefit to travel, which is why I am hoping this Guide entices you to travel more. Travel gives us better perspective, it makes us more adaptable and adventurous, and it just makes people happy. We are in a unique position, living life in the Foreign Service, and one of the greatest benefits is seeing the world. We get the opportunity to see places we would never have dreamed of and even better, we get to share them sometimes with friends and family. -

Chapter 7 Plant diversity in the Hantam-Tanqua-Roggeveld, Succulent Karoo, South Africa: Diversity parameters Abstract Forty Whittaker plots were surveyed to gather plant diversity data in the Hantam-Tanqua- Roggeveld subregion of the Succulent Karoo. Species richness, evenness, Shannon’s index and Simpson’s index of diversity were calculated. Species richness ranged from nine to 100 species per 1000 m² (0.1 ha) with species richness for the Mountain Renosterveld being significantly higher than for the Winter Rainfall Karoo, which in turn was significantly higher than for the Tanqua Karoo. Evenness, Shannon and Simpson indices were found not to differ significantly between the Mountain Renosterveld and Winter Rainfall Karoo, however, these values were significantly higher than for the Tanqua Karoo. Species richness for all plot sizes <0.1 ha were significantly lower for the Tanqua Karoo than for the other two vegetation groups, which did not differ significantly from each other. Only at the 1000 m² scale did species richness differ significantly on the vegetation group level between the Mountain Renosterveld and the Winter Rainfall Karoo. A Principal Co-ordinate Analysis (PCoA) of species richness data at seven plot sizes produced three distinct clusters in the ordination. One cluster represented the sparsely vegetated, extremely arid Tanqua Karoo which has a low species richness, low evenness values and low Shannon and Simpson indices. Another cluster represented the bulk of the Mountain Renosterveld vegetation with a high vegetation cover, high species richness, high evenness values and high Shannon and Simpson indices. The third cluster was formed by the remaining Mountain Renosterveld plots as well as the Winter Rainfall Karoo plots with intermediate values for the diversity parameters. -

Historia 59, 2, November 2014, pp 69-78 S.J.P. Kruger and landownership in the Transvaal J.S. Bergh* State President S.J.P. (Paul) Kruger may be regarded as one of the leading landowners in the Transvaal during the nineteenth century. His historical background in landownership is an interesting one. His father, Casper Kruger, did not own any land in the Cape Colony before he and his family, including the young Paul, migrated to the Transvaal in the late 1830s. Casper was largely dependent on the lands of family and friends in the colony for the necessary grazing for his flock of sheep.1 This was possibly one of the incentives for the young Kruger’s intensive and systematic efforts to acquire land in the Transvaal after he settled there. Chief Justice J.G. Kotzé, who knew Kruger quite well as state president and had weekly appointments with him,2 made an interesting observation on the importance that Kruger attached to landownership: In the matter of banking, however much he may have trusted the deposit of state funds in the bank, the President kept no personal banking account, preferring to cash the Treasury draft received of his monthly salary and having the money in his possession, investing it in land.3 The earliest land registers for the Transvaal contain at least two entries for the young Kruger – one for “Paul” Kruger and the other one for “Stephanus Johan Paulus” Kruger for, respectively, 1849 (Rietvalei [sic] “on the Magalies berg”) and 1842 (“on the Hexrivier”).4 The latter entry refers to the farm Waterkloof No. -

British Scorched Earth and Concentration Camp Policies
72 THE BRITISH SCORCHED EARTH AND CONCENTRATION CAMP POLICIES IN THE 1 POTCHEFSTROOM REGION, 1899–1902 Prof GN van den Bergh Research Associate, North-West University Abstract The continued military resistance of the Republics after the occupation of Bloemfontein and Pretoria and exaggerated by the advent of guerrilla tactics frustrated the British High Command. In the case of the Potchefstroom region, British aggravation came to focus on the successful resurgence of the Potchefstroom Commando, under Gen. Petrus Liebenberg, swelled by surrendered burghers from the Gatsrand again taking up arms. A succession of proclamations of increasing severity were directed at civilians for lending support to commandos had no effect on either the growth or success of Liebenberg’s commando. His basis for operations was the Gatsrand from where he disrupted British supply communications. He was involved in British evacuations of the town in July and August 1900 and in assisting De Wet in escaping British pursuit in August 1900. British policy came to revolve around denying Liebenberg use of the abundant food supplies in the Gatsrand by applying a scorched earth policy there and in the adjacent Mooi River basin. This occurred in conjuncture with the brief second and permanent third occupation of Potchefstroom. The subsequent establishment of garrisons there gave rise to the systematic destruction of the Gatsrand agricultural infrastructure. To deny further use of the region by commandos it was depopulated. In consequence, the first and largest concentration camp in the Transvaal was established in Potchefstroom. The policies succeeded in dispelling Liebenberg from the region. Introduction Two of the most controversial aspects of the Anglo Boer War are the closely related British scorched earth and concentration camp policies. -

The country is in general an arid country and the average annual rainfall of 497 mm are well below the average of 860 mm for the world. Peat accumulates mostly along the relatively well watered, eastern coastline: in the subtropical inter- dune mires of the Mozambique Coastal Plain (MCP), as well as on the central plateau: in the temper- ate highveld sponges and valleybottom fens. Peatlands in South Africa can mostly be classified as fens and are mostly derived from reeds, sedges and grasses. The majority of the peatlands, both on the coast- line and interior, are of Holocene age, but a significant number of peatlands are of late Pleistocene age. The MCP is one of the most densely populated rural areas in Southern Africa and the Gauteng Province in the Highveld region is the most urbanised province and industrial heartland of South Africa. Water is a scarce commodity and urbanisation, industrial and agricultural development and population pres- sure in rural areas have put substantial pressure on wetlands. -
